Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Too Much
Darius didn't move immediately.
Three more knocks sounded from the front door, firm and impatient.
Maya clutched his hand.
“Daddy, is it him?””
Darius looked down at her.
“Who, sweetheart?””
“The man from school.””
Renee backed away from the living room entrance.
“Don't open the door.””
Darius turned toward her.
“You know who's out there?””
“No.””
“Then why are you afraid to open it?””
“Because I don't want this happening in front of the children!””
“Neither do I. But I'm not going to ignore someone who may be connected to all of this.””
He guided Maya toward the kitchen island, keeping her in sight.
“Stay here with your brother. Don't open the door for anyone. If you feel uncomfortable, go to the neighbor we know and ask for help. You don't have to speak to anybody you don't trust.””
Maya nodded, though her fingers remained wrapped around his sleeve.
Darius walked to the front door.
The house remained bright with afternoon sunlight. Through the glass panel beside the entrance, he could see a Black man in his early forties wearing a gray jacket and holding a leather folder.
Darius opened the door only a few inches.
“Can I help you?””
The man looked past him into the house.
“I'm Marcus Reed. I need to speak with Renee.””
“About what?””
“That's between me and her.””
“Not anymore.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“Are you Darius Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“Then you should probably hear what your wife has been doing.””
Darius kept one hand on the door.
“You have five seconds to explain why you tried to collect my daughter from school.””
Marcus glanced toward the kitchen.
“I didn't try to take anybody. Renee asked me to help with a family arrangement.””
“What family arrangement?””
“Something she told me you had already approved.””
Darius felt his jaw tighten.
“I approved nothing.””
Marcus exhaled and opened his leather folder.
“Then she lied to me, too.””
He removed a document and held it up.
It was a copy of a signed agreement bearing Darius's name. The signature looked disturbingly similar to the one on the school withdrawal form.
Darius didn't take the paper.
“Where did you get that?””
“From Renee.””
“What is it?””
“A financial agreement.””
“Between whom?””
“Renee and me.””
Darius stared at him.
“Why would my wife have a financial agreement with you?””
Marcus's expression shifted.
“Because she owes me money.””
From behind Darius, Renee shouted, “You said you wouldn't come here!””
Marcus raised his voice.
“You said you'd pay me!””
Darius turned his head.
Renee stood near the kitchen island, holding the baby against her chest. Her face was wet with tears.
“Get out of my house,” she told Marcus.
“Not until you tell him what you promised.””
Darius stepped fully outside, leaving the door open enough to see the kitchen.
“You will not shout at my family. If you have documents, you can explain them calmly, or you can leave.””
Marcus looked at him for a moment, then lowered his voice.
“I gave Renee money to cover an investment she said would be secured by assets belonging to your family. She told me you were preparing to sign the final paperwork.””
“I never spoke to you.””
“I know that now.””
Darius held out his hand.
“Let me see the agreement.””
Marcus hesitated, then passed him the document.
The first page described a private loan. The second listed a repayment schedule. The third contained a section identifying the collateral that would supposedly secure the debt.
Darius read the description.
His expression hardened.
The collateral was connected to property held in his name.
He looked up.
“She had no authority to pledge my property.””
“That's what I'm trying to tell you,” Marcus replied.
“I thought she had your authorization.””
“You accepted a signature without verifying it?””
Marcus's face tightened.
“I made a mistake.””
“Then you need to speak to a lawyer, because I'm not signing anything and I'm not paying a debt I never agreed to.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“That's fair.””
He glanced past Darius toward the kitchen.
“There's something else you should know. Renee told me your daughter would be living somewhere else by the end of the month.””
Darius went rigid.
“Somewhere else?””
“She said a relative would take her temporarily while you dealt with a personal situation.””
Renee appeared in the doorway.
“Stop talking!””
Marcus ignored her.
“She said the school withdrawal would make it easier to move Maya without drawing attention.””
Darius felt his pulse hammering in his ears.
He turned toward Renee.
“Where were you planning to send my daughter?””
Renee shook her head frantically.
“That's not what he means!””
Marcus held up both hands.
“I'm telling you what she told me.””
Darius looked back at him.
“Did you know Maya was nine years old?””
“Of course.””
“Did you know she didn't recognize you when you appeared at her school?””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“No.””
“Then you should have walked away.””
Marcus nodded, ashamed.
“I should have.””
For the first time, Darius saw something other than defensiveness in the man's face. Marcus looked frightened, but not of Darius. He seemed to be realizing how badly he had misjudged the situation.
“I have copies of the messages Renee sent me,” Marcus said.
“I'll preserve them. If you need evidence of what she told me, I'll cooperate with the appropriate authorities.””
Darius gave him a measured nod.
“Don't contact my daughter again. Any communication about this goes through the proper channels.””
“I understand.””
Marcus stepped back from the doorway.
Before leaving, he looked directly at Darius.
“One more thing. The money Renee sent me wasn't the only money involved.””
Darius's stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus glanced at Renee.
“She told me she was expecting another payment. She said it would come after you signed a document transferring control of the family trust.””
Darius turned slowly toward his wife.
“What document?””
Renee's eyes filled with fresh tears.
“I was trying to fix the debt.””
“By taking control of the trust?””
“I never meant to hurt Maya!””
“You used her education money. You tried to remove her from school. You gave someone else the impression that I had authorized changes to my own property.””
“I was desperate!””
Darius looked at the baby in her arms.
“And what about him? Did you think about what this would do to him?””
Renee began to cry harder.
“I thought I could put everything back before anyone knew.””
Marcus quietly left the porch.
Darius closed the door and returned to the kitchen.
Maya stood beside the marble island, watching him with frightened eyes.
He knelt in front of her.
“Sweetheart, I need you to stay close to me today. I'm going to make some calls, and we're going to get help from people whose job it is to keep children safe.””
“Are you sending me away?”” she whispered.
Darius pulled her into his arms.
“Never because of something you did. You belong here, and I'm going to make sure you're safe.””
Maya buried her face against his shoulder.
Renee approached them slowly.
“Darius, please. We can work this out as a family.””
He stood, keeping Maya beside him.
“Right now, my responsibility is to protect the children and find out exactly what happened.””
He picked up the legal documents, the bank statements, and the school forms, keeping them together on the island.
Then he called the bank, followed by the attorney. He requested that access to Maya's education funds be reviewed immediately and that no changes to the family trust be processed without direct verification.
Renee sat down, silent.
For several minutes, the kitchen was filled only with the ordinary sounds of the afternoon: the refrigerator humming, the baby fussing, and Maya's uneven breathing as she tried to calm herself.
Then Darius's phone rang.
The caller identification showed Evelyn Price's office.
He answered.
“Mr. Bennett,” the attorney said, “I've reviewed the documents you described. There's a serious problem with the proposed trust amendment.””
Darius looked at Renee.
“What problem?””
“The amendment doesn't simply change who manages the funds. If executed, it would transfer certain decision-making powers to another person and restrict your ability to reverse the arrangement without court approval.””
Darius gripped the edge of the island.
“Who would receive those powers?””
The attorney paused.
“Marcus Reed is named as the proposed independent administrator.””
Darius stared at his wife.
“You were going to give a stranger control over my family's trust?””
Renee covered her face.
“I didn't think it would happen like that.””
“Then how did you think it would happen?””
She lowered her hands.
For the first time, she looked less angry than defeated.
“I thought once the money was paid, Marcus would leave us alone. I thought I could transfer the trust, borrow against it, pay the debt, and restore everything later.””
Darius's voice was barely above a whisper.
“You were willing to risk Maya's future to cover a debt you hid from me.””
“I thought I had no other choice.””
The attorney interrupted gently.
“Mr. Bennett, there's one more detail. The amendment was submitted with a supporting statement claiming that you were temporarily unable to manage your affairs.””
Darius stopped breathing for a moment.
“Who wrote that statement?””
“I can't establish that from the document alone. But it contains a declaration bearing your signature.””
He looked down at the forged papers scattered across the island.
“How many documents have been submitted in my name?””
“We're still reviewing the file.””
Then the attorney said something that made Darius's blood run cold.
“The declaration also identifies the person who would be authorized to act on your behalf during that period.””
Darius tightened his grip on the phone.
“Who?””
The attorney read the name.
And Darius finally understood that the forged school forms were only the beginning.
The person Renee had selected to act in his place was not Marcus Reed.
It was someone Darius knew.
Someone who had been inside his home before.
Someone who had already earned his trust.
He looked at Renee, waiting for her to meet his eyes.
May you like
She didn't.
And when the attorney offered to send him the complete declaration, Darius realized that the next signature he needed to investigate might belong to the one person he had never imagined would betray him.
