Chapter 9: What Their Mother Had Hidden

Darius placed the baby safely in his padded seat and stepped closer to the kitchen window, keeping Maya within sight.

“What do you mean the trust wasn't just about Maya's education?””

Camille was quiet for several seconds.

“Mom never trusted Terrence with money,” she finally said.

“She loved him, but she knew how easily he could be persuaded by people promising quick profits.””

Darius glanced toward the documents on the island.

“Terrence helped me manage some of the family's accounts. He said he was good at handling investments.””

“He was good at convincing people he knew what he was doing.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I tried. You told me I was being unfair to him.””

Darius closed his eyes.

He remembered that argument. Camille had accused Terrence of making decisions without showing the family the full records. Darius had defended his brother, believing Camille was still angry about an inheritance disagreement.

He had told her to stop turning every family issue into a fight.

They hadn't spoken properly since.

“I'm sorry,” Darius said quietly.

Camille sighed.

“We can talk about that later. Right now, you need to understand what Mom did.””

She explained that Lorraine had established a separate protective arrangement alongside Maya's education fund. It included an investment account and a small commercial property she had owned for years. The property generated rental income, which Lorraine intended to preserve for the family's long-term security.

The arrangements had been structured so that no single family member could quietly redirect the assets.

Darius listened, his expression growing more troubled.

“How much was in the investment account?””

“Mom never gave me a final number. But the property alone was worth considerably more than the amount in Maya's education fund.””

“And Terrence knew?””

“He knew the property existed. He didn't know the full details of the trust.””

Darius looked at the documents again.

The forged amendment had referenced both the education fund and an additional asset schedule.

He felt sick.

“Camille, the documents Renee signed were designed to give someone control over the trust. Terrence's name appears in the paperwork.””

“Then he found the asset schedule.””

“Apparently.””

“Darius, listen carefully. Mom put safeguards in place because she was worried someone might try to pressure a family member into transferring the assets.””

Darius turned toward Renee.

“Did you know about the property?””

Renee looked down.

Camille heard the question.

“Is Renee there?””

“Yes.””

“Then ask her what Terrence promised her.””

Darius looked at his wife.

“What did Terrence promise you?””

Renee pressed her lips together.

“Renee.””

“He said if I helped him complete the documents, he would pay off the debt and leave us alone.””

Darius's stomach tightened.

“Leave us alone from what?””

She stared at the counter.

“He said Marcus wasn't the only person who wanted his money back.””

Camille spoke sharply through the phone.

“Who else?””

Renee shook her head, even though Camille couldn't see her.

“I don't know their names.””

Darius's expression hardened.

“You expect us to believe you were transferring control of a family trust to settle debts without knowing who was involved?””

“I was desperate!””

“Then tell us what happened.””

Renee took a shaky breath.

Months earlier, she explained, she had become involved in an investment opportunity through someone she met at a community event. The promoter had promised unusually high returns in a short period. Renee had used personal savings to participate, believing she could build a financial cushion for herself and the baby.

When the promised payments failed to arrive, she borrowed money to cover the losses. She told herself she could recover the initial investment before anyone noticed.

Instead, the debts multiplied.

Marcus had agreed to lend her money, believing the loan would be secured by family assets with Darius's consent. Terrence had then offered to help arrange a larger transaction that would allow Renee to repay Marcus and the other lenders.

The proposed transaction depended on legal documents falsely suggesting that Darius had authorized changes to the trust and was temporarily unable to manage his affairs.

“You knew those signatures weren't mine,” Darius said.

Renee nodded, tears slipping down her face.

“Yes.””

“And you still submitted the documents?””

“I thought Terrence could make everything right.””

Camille's voice was cold.

“Terrence didn't offer to help you because he cared about your family. He needed someone inside the household to provide access to the records.””

Renee looked up.

“What?””

“He needed the original documents and information about the trust. He couldn't obtain them through ordinary channels, so he found someone he thought he could persuade.””

Darius felt his hands begin to shake.

“Are you saying Terrence used Renee?””

“I'm saying he had a reason to pursue the trust, and Renee's debts gave him leverage.””

Renee covered her face.

“He told me it would be legal.””

Camille responded immediately.

“Legal transactions don't require forged signatures.””

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Maya quietly approached her father.

“Daddy?””

He turned toward her.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

She held out a folded piece of paper she had kept tucked inside the back pocket of her overalls.

“I found this in Renee's purse yesterday. I didn't know what it was, but I thought it might be important.””

Darius accepted it carefully.

The paper was a printed message, apparently copied from an email. At the top was Terrence's name. Below it was a short exchange about the proposed trust amendment.

Darius read the first line.

*Once the school withdrawal is processed, there will be fewer complications with the guardianship paperwork.*

He felt the blood drain from his face.

The next message was even worse.

*Make sure Darius doesn't see the original asset schedule until the appointment is complete.*

Darius read the words again.

Maya watched him anxiously.

“Did I do something wrong?””

He immediately knelt beside her.

“No, baby. You did exactly the right thing by telling me.””

He kissed her forehead and stood.

Camille had gone silent on the phone.

“Darius,” she finally said, “you need to preserve that email and send it to the attorney. Don't let Terrence know you have it until you've received legal advice.””

“I will.””

“And you need to hear something else. Mom left a sealed letter with her attorney. She instructed that it be delivered to you and me if anyone attempted to alter the trust without proper authorization.””

Darius stared at the documents.

“Why didn't you tell me about the letter before?””

“Because I thought the trust was secure. I never imagined Terrence would go this far.””

“Where is it?””

“I'm contacting Mom's attorney now. I'll ask him to arrange a meeting with both of us.””

Darius glanced at the calendar.

“Can we meet tomorrow?””

“Yes. But Darius, there's a reason Mom insisted that the letter be delivered to both of us together.””

“What reason?””

Camille hesitated.

“She said the person who tried to take control of the trust might already know what was inside it.””

Darius looked at Renee.

His wife was staring at the printed email as though she had just realized how much of the plan she had never understood.

“Camille,” he said, “what exactly did Mom put in that letter?””

His sister lowered her voice.

“I don't know. But the attorney told me one thing when I called him two years ago.””

“What?””

“He said our mother didn't just leave instructions about the money. She left evidence.””

Darius's phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

*YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE TRUST ALONE.*

Another message followed immediately.

*YOUR MOTHER MADE A MISTAKE. DON'T MAKE THE SAME ONE.*

Darius stared at the screen.

Then a third message appeared.

*ASK CAMILLE WHO WAS WITH YOUR MOTHER THE NIGHT SHE CHANGED HER WILL.*

He looked at the phone, then toward the kitchen window, suddenly aware that someone knew about their conversation.

Camille's voice came through the speaker.

“Darius? What happened?””

He read the messages aloud.

His sister went silent.

Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, she said, “That's impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because only three people knew Mom had changed her will that night.””

Darius's grip tightened around the phone.

“Who were they?””

Camille took a shaky breath.

“Me. Terrence. And Renee.””

Darius slowly turned toward his wife.

Renee looked up.

And for the first time since he had discovered the forged school letter, she didn't deny anything.

She simply whispered, “I can explain why I was there.””
