Chapter 10: My Father Was Dead Before the Crash

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Daniel stood beneath the warehouse light, his face pale and his hands trembling.

Aunt Claire had backed against the workbench.

Nobody spoke.

Then I heard myself ask the question.

“What do you mean he was already dead?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I mean the accident wasn't what the police believed it was.””

I stared at him.

“Explain.””

He glanced toward the open doorway.

“First, we need to leave this building.””

“No.””

“Maya—”

“You've lied to me for days. You knew my father was in danger. You knew about my mother.

You knew Claire was involved. And now you're telling me Dad was dead before his car went over a bridge?””

My voice broke.

“You don't get to tell me to leave.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“You're right.””

He placed his briefcase on the workbench.

“Your father came here on October 14 because he had arranged a meeting with Michael Hayes. He wanted to obtain a signed confession concerning the fraudulent transfers and your mother's death.””

I looked at Claire.

She nodded slowly.

“Richard arrived first,” she whispered.

“I was supposed to meet him here, but I was late.””

Daniel continued.

“When I arrived, Richard was unconscious.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“We don't know for certain. There was a glass on the workbench. The medical examiner later reported that Richard had traces of a sedative in his system.””

I felt sick.

“Someone drugged him?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Claire.

She began crying.

“I didn't do it, Maya.””

“Then who did?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a photograph.

It showed my father sitting in a chair inside the warehouse.

His head was tilted forward.

A glass stood beside him.

“Where did you get this?””

“From a security camera that wasn't connected to the main system.””

I examined the timestamp.

10:31 p.m.

“Was he alive?””

Daniel nodded.

“He was breathing when I found him.””

“What did you do?””

“I called for medical assistance.””

“Then?””

He looked down.

“Someone arrived before the ambulance.””

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Michael Hayes.””

I felt my pulse hammering.

“What did he do?””

“He said he could arrange private medical treatment. He insisted that involving the police would create problems for everyone.””

“You believed him?””

“No. But I couldn't physically stop him from taking Richard.””

I stared at the photograph.

“And you let him?””

Daniel's face crumpled.

“I made a terrible decision.””

He removed another document.

It was an emergency medical report.

My father's name appeared at the top.

The time of death was recorded as 11:18 p.m.

But the report contained a handwritten note.

Patient received at private medical facility. Transport circumstances unclear.

I looked up.

“What private facility?””

Daniel gave me the address.

It was an abandoned medical building outside Richmond.

“Why wasn't this reported?””

“Because the report was never officially filed. It was a copy given to me by a nurse who became frightened after your father's death.””

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“So the police investigated a staged accident while you knew my father had been taken somewhere else?””

Daniel nodded.

“I was afraid.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone in this family is afraid. Everyone is protecting someone. Meanwhile, Grandma almost died, my mother died, and my father is gone.””

I turned toward the door.

Daniel called after me.

“There's more.””

I stopped.

“Your father left a final recording.””

He held up the device Claire had given me.

“I believe it's on here.””

I looked at him.

“You've known about this?””

“I knew the device existed. I didn't know Claire had it.””

I pressed the playback button.

Static filled the warehouse.

Then my father's voice emerged.

“Daniel, if you're listening to this, it means I wasn't able to finish what I started.””

I closed my eyes.

His voice sounded so familiar.

So painfully alive.

“Vanessa isn't working alone. Michael has someone inside the family helping him. I found the original transfer records.

The money wasn't being stolen to purchase property. It was being used to pay someone to keep quiet about what happened to Sarah.””

Sarah.

My mother.

The recording continued.

“I have the name. I have the proof. And I know who was driving the car the night she died.””

A second voice interrupted.

“Richard, stop recording.””

I froze.

I recognized that voice.

It belonged to Aunt Claire.

I slowly turned toward her.

Claire began shaking her head.

“No. Maya, listen—”

The recording continued.

“Claire, I need you to tell Maya the truth.””

Claire's recorded voice answered.

“She doesn't need to know.””

My father sounded furious.

“She has a right to know who killed her mother.””

I stopped breathing.

Then Claire said something that made the entire world disappear.

“Your mother wasn't supposed to die, Maya.””

I stared at my aunt.

She covered her mouth.

“What did you do?”” I whispered.

Claire collapsed onto the workbench.

“I didn't know they were going to hurt her.””

Daniel stepped between us.

“Maya, let her explain.””

I backed away.

“No.””

Claire reached toward me.

“Please.””

I shook my head.

“You knew something about my mother's death. You knew something about Dad's death. And you let me spend eleven months believing he died in an accident.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Stop saying that!””

My voice echoed through the warehouse.

Then a sound came from outside.

A car engine.

Daniel rushed toward the window.

His face changed.

“Get down!””

A loud crack shattered the warehouse window.

Glass exploded across the workbench.

I dropped to the floor.

Daniel pulled me behind a concrete support pillar.

Claire screamed.

Another crack sounded.

Then silence.

Daniel took out his phone.

“Police! We need immediate assistance at the Carter warehouse!””

I looked toward the broken window.

A dark vehicle was speeding away.

Then I saw something on the floor beside the workbench.

A photograph.

It had fallen from Claire's handbag.

I picked it up.

My mother stood beside a car.

Beside her was a younger Vanessa.

And behind them, partially visible in the reflection of the driver's window, was a man I recognized.

My father.

But the date written on the back was impossible.

It was taken two days after the accident that supposedly killed my mother.
