Chapter 9: The Woman Who Betrayed My Father

I read the message until the words blurred.

Your father didn't die because of Vanessa. He died because of me.

I called Claire.

No answer.

I called again.

Straight to voicemail.

Daniel watched me from across the conference table.

“Don't go anywhere alone.””

I looked at him.

“She raised me after my mother died.””

“I understand.””

“She helped me when Dad died. She sat beside me at the funeral. She held my hand.””

Daniel didn't interrupt.

“How could she do this?””

“We don't know that she did.””

I showed him the message.

He read it carefully.

“Where does she want to meet?””

I checked the previous message.

No location.

I typed a reply.

*What do you mean? Tell me where you are.*

The response came thirty seconds later.

*The old Carter warehouse. 7 p.m. Don't bring Daniel.*

Daniel shook his head.

“Absolutely not.””

“I have to hear what she has to say.””

“Then we arrange for the police to be nearby.””

“She specifically said not to bring you.””

“Which is exactly why I'm coming.””

I stared at the red file.

“Daniel, if Claire really knows what happened to my father, I need her to talk.””

He considered this.

Finally, he nodded.

“We'll notify the investigator. You'll meet her in a public area, and officers will be close enough to respond.””

I agreed.

But there was something I hadn't told Daniel.

I had already decided to bring the red file.

The old Carter warehouse had been closed for nearly ten years.

My grandfather had used it to store equipment for his construction business.

The building stood near the edge of town, surrounded by overgrown grass and rusting fences.

At 6:55 p.m., I parked across the street.

Aunt Claire's car was already there.

I walked toward the entrance.

The side door was unlocked.

Inside, the air smelled of dust and old wood.

A single light was on.

Claire stood beside a workbench.

She looked older than she had that morning.

Her eyes were red.

“Maya.””

I stopped several feet away.

“Why did you send that message?””

She looked at the red folder in my hand.

“You found it.””

“Answer me.””

Claire sat down.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

“Did you take ninety thousand dollars from Dad?””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer hit me like a slap.

“Why?””

“I needed the money.””

“For what?””

She looked away.

“Your father found out I had debts.””

“What debts?””

“Business debts. I made some bad investments. I borrowed money from people I shouldn't have trusted.””

I stared at her.

“So you stole from him?””

“I didn't think of it that way.””

“What did you think it was?””

Claire's voice broke.

“I thought I could pay it back before anyone noticed.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That's what everyone says when they steal.””

She flinched.

“Your father discovered the transfer. He called me that night.””

“The night he died?””

She nodded.

“What happened?””

Claire began crying.

“He told me he was going to the police. He said he had evidence that I had helped Vanessa move money.””

“Did you?””

“Not knowingly at first.””

I stared at her.

“Explain.””

Claire wiped her cheeks.

“Vanessa told me she was helping your grandmother organize her finances. She asked me to sign some forms because she said Evelyn was too tired to handle the paperwork.””

My stomach tightened.

“You signed documents?””

“Only once. I thought they were routine banking authorizations.””

“And the money?””

“Some of it went into an account Vanessa controlled. I didn't know until Richard showed me the statements.””

I stepped closer.

“Then why did you take ninety thousand?””

Claire looked down.

“Because Vanessa threatened me.””

“With what?””

“She had copies of the documents I signed. She told me she could make it look like I had stolen everything.””

I shook my head.

“So you helped her hide the theft?””

“I was scared.””

“And Dad found out.””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Claire stared at the floor.

“He told me I had until midnight to explain everything to the police.””

My throat tightened.

“Did you meet him that night?””

She nodded.

“Where?””

“Here.””

I looked around the warehouse.

“Why?””

“He wanted to give me a chance to tell the truth before he reported me.””

“What happened?””

Claire took a shaky breath.

“I came here at 10:30. Richard was already gone.””

I frowned.

“Gone where?””

“I don't know. His car was outside, but he wasn't there.””

I felt cold.

“Then what?””

“I found his phone on the workbench.””

She reached into her handbag and removed a small black device.

My heart stopped.

It was the same kind of recording device I had seen Vanessa remove from Dad's desk in the security footage.

“Where did you get that?””

Claire held it out.

“Richard left it here.””

I didn't take it.

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to hear what he had recorded.””

I stared at her.

“What did you hear?””

She looked directly at me.

“Your father had been talking to someone about your mother.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

“Michael Hayes.””

I stepped backward.

“Why would Dad be talking to him?””

“Because Michael had admitted that your mother's death wasn't an accident.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What?””

Claire nodded through her tears.

“He told Richard that someone had tampered with the brakes on your mother's car.””

I couldn't breathe.

“Who did it?””

Claire shook her head.

“Richard didn't know.””

“Then how does Vanessa fit into this?””

“She knew about the meeting. She knew your father was trying to find the person responsible.””

I stared at the device.

“Did you hear the recording?””

Claire nodded.

“Your father said he had discovered the name of the person who ordered it.””

“Who?””

Claire looked at me.

“I never heard the name. The recording cut off.””

“Why didn't you give this to the police?””

“Because Vanessa came here the next morning.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she say?””

“She told me that if I gave the recording to anyone, she would tell you I had stolen the money and caused your father's death.””

I stepped closer.

“Did you believe her?””

Claire began crying harder.

“I didn't know what to believe.””

I felt anger and grief fighting inside me.

“You let me think Dad died in an accident.””

“I was afraid.””

“You let Grandma suffer.””

“I tried to help her.””

“You let Vanessa control her medication!””

Claire shook her head violently.

“I never knew about that. I swear.””

I wanted to believe her.

But the red file contained her name.

The bank transfer was real.

And my father had died after confronting her.

I reached for the recording device.

“Give it to me.””

Claire handed it over.

Then she grabbed my wrist.

“Maya, there's something else.””

I pulled away.

“What?””

She looked toward the entrance.

“Vanessa wasn't the only person waiting for your father that night.””

A vehicle door slammed outside.

Claire went pale.

“He came here with someone.””

“Who?””

She whispered a name.

“Your father came here with Daniel Brooks.””

My blood ran cold.

“That isn't possible.””

“I saw them together.””

I shook my head.

“Daniel said he wasn't there.””

“Then he lied.””

Suddenly, headlights flooded the warehouse windows.

A car engine stopped outside.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“You need to leave.””

“Who is that?””

She didn't answer.

The side door opened.

Daniel stepped inside.

His face was pale.

“Maya, put that recording device down.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He looked at Claire.

Then at the red folder.

“Because there's something on that recording you were never supposed to hear.””

I backed away.

“What did you do to my father?””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't kill Richard.””

“Then why did you lie about meeting him?””

He swallowed.

“Because I was there when he made the final decision.””

“What decision?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

And then he said the words that changed everything.

“Your father didn't die on the highway by accident, Maya.””

May you like

He paused.

“He was already dead before his car went over the bridge.””
