Chapter 11: The Photograph That Changed Everything

The photograph was shaking in my hands.

I turned it over again.

October 16.

My mother's name was written beneath the date.

Sarah, Vanessa, Richard.

Three people who, according to everything I'd been told, should never have been together again.

My mother had supposedly died two days earlier.

My father was standing behind the camera's reflection.

And Vanessa was smiling.

I looked at Claire.

“Explain this.””

She stared at the photograph.

Then she began sobbing.

“Where did you get that?””

“It fell from your handbag.””

Claire reached for it.

I pulled it away.

“Don't touch it.””

Daniel was speaking to the emergency dispatcher.

He gave the warehouse address and described the vehicle that had fled.

I barely heard him.

My entire world had become that photograph.

“Claire, was my mother alive after October 14?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie to me.””

“I swear I don't know.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“What about you?””

He had finished the call.

He looked at the photograph.

Then he closed his eyes.

“Richard gave me that photograph.””

“When?””

“Two days before he died.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Why?””

“He told me it proved Vanessa had been lying about something.””

“What?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Your mother had been declared dead years earlier. But Richard believed someone had used her identity after her death.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“There's another possibility.””

“What?””

He looked directly at me.

“Your mother may not have died when you were told she did.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“The original death certificate was issued following a fire. The body was badly damaged, and identification relied heavily on dental records and personal effects.””

I shook my head.

“My father identified her.””

“Did he?””

I couldn't answer.

I remembered the funeral.

The closed casket.

The flowers.

Vanessa telling me that seeing my mother would be too upsetting.

My father holding me while I cried.

But I had never seen my mother's face.

Not once.

“Why would Dad pretend she was dead?””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Because he believed someone was trying to kill her.””

I turned.

“Claire?””

She covered her face.

“I was told she died.””

“By whom?””

“Vanessa.””

I stared at her.

“Why would you believe her?””

“Because she showed me the medical report. She said Richard had already identified the body.””

“Did you ever see it?””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

The police arrived.

Two officers entered the warehouse, followed by an investigator I recognized from the hospital.

They examined the broken window and collected the photograph.

The investigator interviewed us separately.

When I showed him the recording, his expression became serious.

“Miss Carter, I need you to understand that this changes the scope of the investigation.””

“Can you find out whether my mother is alive?””

“We can reopen the identification records and investigate the circumstances surrounding the original death.””

“Can you do it now?””

“We'll start immediately.””

I handed over the flash drive and the recording device.

Then I gave him the photograph.

Before he left, he asked Claire to accompany him to the station for further questioning.

She looked at me.

“Maya, please.””

I couldn't meet her eyes.

“Tell them everything.””

She nodded.

As the officers escorted her outside, Daniel approached me.

“You need somewhere safe to stay tonight.””

“I have an apartment.””

“Does Vanessa know where you live?””

I hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Then don't go there.””

I looked at him.

“Why are you suddenly so concerned about my safety?””

He accepted the question.

“Because your father asked me to protect you, and I've failed him too many times.””

I turned away.

“I'm not ready to trust you.””

“I understand.””

That night, I stayed at a hotel arranged by the investigating officers.

I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my mother's photograph.

At 2:14 a.m., my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered cautiously.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice spoke.

“Maya?””

I sat upright.

“Who is this?””

There was a pause.

Then the woman whispered:

“It's your mother.””

My entire body went numb.

I gripped the phone.

“Who is this?””

“Please don't hang up.””

I couldn't breathe.

“Mom?””

A quiet sob came through the speaker.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

I started crying.

“Where are you?””

“I can't tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because they're watching me.””

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

“Are you alive?””

“Yes.””

The word destroyed me.

My mother was alive.

For nearly twenty years, I had mourned a woman who had been somewhere in the world, unable to reach me.

“Why didn't you come back?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Several times. Richard stopped me.””

I felt something break inside me.

“Dad?””

“He thought it was the only way to keep you safe.””

“Safe from whom?””

“Michael Hayes. Vanessa. And someone else.””

I stood and began pacing.

“Mom, I need you to tell me where you are.””

“Listen carefully. You found the storage unit?””

“Yes.””

“Did you find the red ledger?””

“Yes.””

“Then you know about the money.””

“I know about Vanessa. I know about Michael. I know Grandma was being forced to sign property documents.””

My mother began crying.

“Oh, Maya. I'm so sorry.””

“Why did Dad die?””

There was a long silence.

Then she answered.

“Because he discovered that Michael had found me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Your father was trying to bring me home. He wanted to tell you everything.””

“Then what happened?””

“He met Michael to negotiate my release.””

I gripped the edge of the desk.

“Release?””

“I was being held somewhere. I escaped, but Michael found me again.””

“Where are you now?””

“I can't say.””

“Mom, please.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Your father wasn't killed by Vanessa.””

I remembered Daniel's words.

“He was dead before the crash.””

My mother gasped.

“Who told you that?””

“Daniel.””

She fell silent.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel knows what happened to Richard. But he doesn't know who gave the order.””

“Who did?””

My mother began to answer.

A sudden noise interrupted her.

A door slammed.

She whispered urgently.

“Maya, you have to listen. The person who ordered your father's death is—”

The call disconnected.

I stared at the screen.

I called back.

The number was unavailable.

Then a text message arrived.

*Your mother is alive. But if you want to see her, bring the original blue notebook to the place where your father proposed to her. Come alone.*

I read it twice.

The place where Dad proposed.

A small botanical garden outside Richmond.

May you like

But the message contained one more line.

*And don't tell Daniel. He was there when Richard died.*
