Chapter 10: The Night My Mother Lied

I called my mother at 7:15 the following morning.

She didn't answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

On the third attempt, she finally picked up.

"Marcus?""

"Where were you the night Emily died?""

Silence.

I stood in my kitchen, gripping the edge of the counter.

"Mom, I need you to answer me.""

"Why are you asking me that?""

"Because Daniel found a document supposedly written by Emily three days before she died. It was created on your computer.""

My mother began breathing unevenly.

"That doesn't mean anything.""

"Then explain it.""

"I don't remember.""

"Mom.""

"Marcus, please. Not over the phone.""

I closed my eyes.

"Fine. I'll come over.""

She hesitated.

"Don't bring Vanessa.""

"I'm not bringing Vanessa.""

"And don't tell Robert.""

I frowned.

"Why not?""

Another pause.

"Just come alone.""

The call ended.

I immediately contacted Daniel.

He wasn't happy about the request.

"Marcus, I strongly recommend that you don't meet her alone.""

"She's my mother.""

"She's also a potential witness in a financial investigation.""

"I won't discuss the legal details. I just want to hear what she knows.""

Daniel sighed.

"Take someone with you. And don't delete or alter anything she shows you.""

I agreed.

At ten, I arrived at Evelyn's house with Daniel.

She opened the door wearing a gray sweater.

When she saw him, her face tightened.

"I asked you to come alone.""

Daniel remained polite.

"I understand. I'm here to make sure everything is documented accurately.""

My mother stepped aside.

We sat in the living room.

She didn't offer coffee.

She didn't ask about Maya.

She simply stared at her hands.

I placed the printed document on the table.

"Mom, did you create this?""

She looked at the page.

Then she began crying.

"I didn't write it.""

"Who did?""

"Vanessa.""

I stared at her.

"Why was it on your computer?""

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

"She asked me to print something.""

"What?""

"A statement about Emily's wishes.""

"Did you know what it said?""

"Not at first.""

I leaned forward.

"Mom, you need to tell me everything.""

She looked toward the hallway.

Then she whispered:

"The night Emily died, Vanessa came to the hospital.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"I know she visited.""

"No. She came after you left.""

I frowned.

"I never left.""

My mother shook her head.

"You went downstairs to speak to the insurance representative. Remember? There was a problem with Emily's paperwork.""

I remembered.

I'd gone downstairs for perhaps twenty minutes.

My mother had offered to stay with Emily.

"Vanessa arrived during that time," Evelyn continued.

"What did she want?""

"She said Emily had asked her to bring some documents.""

"What documents?""

"A statement about the inheritance.""

I stared at her.

"Emily was dying. Why would she be signing inheritance papers?""

"Vanessa said Emily wanted everything settled.""

Daniel interrupted.

"Did you personally see Emily sign anything?""

Evelyn shook her head.

"No.""

"Did you hear her authorize Vanessa to prepare the statement?""

"No.""

"Then why did you sign as a witness?""

My mother covered her face.

"Vanessa said she had already spoken to Emily. She told me the document was only a confirmation of what Emily wanted.""

I stood.

"You witnessed something you never saw?""

"I thought I was helping!""

"Helping whom?""

My voice cracked.

"Emily? Maya? Or Vanessa?""

My mother began sobbing.

Daniel remained quiet.

I walked toward the window.

For years, I had believed my mother and Emily had developed a beautiful relationship.

They had disagreed occasionally, but nothing serious.

Now I was learning that my mother had helped someone create documents involving Emily's estate while my wife was dying.

I turned back.

"What happened after Vanessa left?""

Evelyn reached into a drawer.

She removed a small envelope.

"I kept this.""

Inside was a hospital visitor log.

The date was the night Emily died.

Two visitors had been recorded after my departure.

Evelyn Carter.

Vanessa Carter.

But there was something else.

Beside Vanessa's name was a handwritten note:

*Requested private conversation with patient.*

I looked at my mother.

"Did Emily speak to her?""

"I don't know.""

"You were there!""

"I went to the vending machine. When I came back, Vanessa was leaving.""

I stared at the log.

"How long were you gone?""

"Maybe fifteen minutes.""

"Did Emily say anything afterward?""

My mother nodded.

"She asked me whether you had returned.""

"What else?""

Evelyn swallowed.

"She asked whether Maya was safe.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did you tell her?""

"That you were taking care of everything.""

"Then what?""

My mother lowered her eyes.

"She asked me to promise something.""

"What?""

"She told me never to let anyone make Maya feel unwanted.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Did she mention Vanessa?""

"No.""

"Did she give you anything?""

Evelyn nodded.

She reached into another drawer and removed a small folded piece of paper.

It was handwritten.

I recognized Emily's writing immediately.

The words were faint, but readable.

Evelyn, please make sure Marcus knows that Maya's inheritance belongs to Maya alone. I trust him to protect her. If anyone tells you otherwise, ask me first.

At the bottom was Emily's signature.

My eyes burned.

"Why didn't you show me this?""

My mother cried harder.

"Because Vanessa told me Emily had changed her mind. She said the letter was written before the final arrangements.""

"Did you believe her?""

"I wanted to.""

I looked at the letter.

Then at the woman who had raised me.

"You knew Emily trusted me.""

Evelyn nodded.

"And you let someone tell me otherwise.""

She reached for my hand.

I stepped away.

"I need time.""

I left with the letter.

Outside, Daniel examined the handwriting.

"This could be important.""

"Can we prove it's genuine?""

"Possibly. We'll need comparison samples and an independent examination.""

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

Robert.

"Marcus, have you spoken to Evelyn?""

"Yes.""

"Did she tell you about the hospital?""

"She did.""

Robert was quiet.

Then he said:

"There's something else I need you to know.""

I stopped walking.

"What?""

"Emily recorded a private video during her final week.""

My grip tightened.

"Where is it?""

"She gave it to me in a sealed envelope. I was supposed to give it to Maya when she turned eighteen.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Emily specifically asked me to wait unless something happened that threatened Maya's inheritance.""

I looked at Daniel.

He immediately understood.

"Robert, do you still have it?""

"Yes.""

"Can we see it?""

"Come to my house.""

An hour later, we sat in Robert's study.

He placed a small memory card on the desk.

"This is the original.""

Daniel documented it before opening the file.

Emily appeared on the screen.

She was pale and thin, but her eyes were clear.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, something may have happened that I couldn't prevent.""

My heart began pounding.

Emily took a breath.

"I need you to understand something about Maya's inheritance. I made very specific arrangements. Nobody should be able to change them without independent legal approval.""

She paused.

Then her expression changed.

"Especially not someone who claims to be helping me.""

I leaned closer.

Emily looked down at something outside the camera.

Then she said a sentence that made the entire room go silent.

"If Vanessa ever tries to become Maya's legal guardian, please investigate what happened to the original hospital documents.""

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

Daniel slowly turned toward Robert.

"What original hospital documents?""

Robert looked at me.

Then he opened a locked drawer.

Inside was a thick medical file.

He removed a folded sheet.

It was an original hospital record from the night Emily died.

At the top was a handwritten notation.

*Patient requested that all visitors be removed before signing final estate instructions.*

Beneath it was another note.

*Patient reports feeling pressured by family member.*

And beside that note was a name.

Vanessa Carter.
