Chapter 7: The Name My Daughter Was Forced to Practice
I read Mrs. Collins's message three times.
Then I called her.
"Marcus?"" she answered immediately.
"Are you on your way?""
"I'm leaving now. Is Maya safe?""
"She's with me in my classroom. She's frightened, but she's physically okay.""
I grabbed my keys.
"What exactly did she tell you?""
Mrs. Collins lowered her voice.
"She came to me during lunch and asked whether children could legally change their names without their fathers knowing.""
I stopped walking.
"What?""
"She said Vanessa had been making her practice signing a different name.""
I gripped my phone.
"What name?""
There was a pause.
"Emily.""
For a moment, I couldn't understand what I was hearing.
"Emily?""
"Yes. Maya told me Vanessa said she would have to start using her mother's name on certain documents.""
I closed my eyes.
Emily had been gone for six years.
Maya remembered very little about her biological mother, but she knew her name. She had seen it on photographs, birthday cards, and the letters Emily had written before she died.
"Mrs. Collins, don't let anyone take Maya from school.""
"I won't. I've already informed the principal.""
"I'm coming.""
When I arrived, Mrs. Collins was waiting outside the classroom.
Maya sat at a small table near the window.
Her backpack rested on the floor. Both hands were wrapped around a paper cup of water.
She looked up when I entered.
"Daddy!""
I crossed the room and knelt beside her.
"Hey, sweetheart.""
She immediately wrapped her arms around my neck.
I held her for several seconds.
Then I gently pulled back.
"Mrs. Collins told me you wanted to talk about something.""
Maya nodded.
She looked at the teacher.
Mrs. Collins gave her a reassuring smile.
"It's okay, sweetheart. You can tell your daddy.""
Maya reached into her backpack and removed a folded sheet of paper.
"I brought it.""
I unfolded it.
There were several lines of handwriting.
Maya Carter.
Emily Carter.
Emily Rose Carter.
Emily Rose Carter.
The last version had been written repeatedly, as if someone had made her practice until the letters looked consistent.
"Who asked you to do this?""
"Vanessa.""
"Why?""
Maya looked down.
"She said it was for a surprise.""
"What kind of surprise?""
"She said I was going to have a new name.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Did she explain why?""
Maya nodded slowly.
"She said Mommy's name was special, and I should use it when I sign important papers.""
I studied the page.
"Did she tell you what the papers were?""
"She said they were about money.""
My hands tightened around the paper.
"What else?""
Maya hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"She said if I didn't practice, I might have to go somewhere else.""
I pulled her close.
"You're not going anywhere without me.""
"But she said you might get tired of me.""
I felt something inside my chest collapse.
"Who told you that?""
"Vanessa.""
Maya's voice became smaller.
"She said you have a busy job, and you don't like problems. She said if I kept telling you things, you'd send me away.""
I looked toward Mrs. Collins.
The teacher's eyes were wet.
I took a slow breath.
"Sweetheart, none of that is true. Nothing you tell me will ever make me stop loving you.""
Maya nodded.
Then she reached into her backpack again.
This time, she removed a small envelope.
"I found this in Vanessa's purse yesterday.""
I opened it.
Inside was a printed photograph of Emily.
It was an old picture from our wedding.
On the back, someone had written:
*SHE HAS TO BELIEVE SHE IS EMILY'S DAUGHTER FIRST.*
Beneath that was another sentence.
*THEN THE SIGNATURE WILL MAKE SENSE.*
I stared at the words.
"What does this mean, sweetheart?""
Maya shook her head.
"I don't know. Vanessa told me to keep the picture in my room.""
I put it inside my jacket.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
"Marcus, where are you?""
"At Maya's school.""
"Good. Don't take her home until we've discussed the situation. I contacted the authorities about the suspected forged documents.""
"What's happening?""
"I've also obtained information about the psychologist whose name appears on Vanessa's petition.""
"Who is this person?""
"Dr. Helen Morris. She surrendered her license after an investigation into falsified evaluations.""
I glanced at the photograph.
"Could Vanessa have actually spoken to her?""
"That's what we're trying to establish.""
I lowered my voice.
"Daniel, Maya says Vanessa made her practice signing Emily's name.""
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
"Marcus, I think we need to investigate whether someone intended to use Maya's identity to access the insurance benefit.""
I felt cold.
"What do you mean?""
"The insurance company has received a preliminary inquiry about changing the beneficiary's representative.""
"From whom?""
"That's what I'm checking.""
I looked at Maya.
She was carefully arranging her pencils on the table.
I wanted to protect her from every word of this conversation.
"Daniel, I'll meet you at your office.""
After ending the call, I asked Mrs. Collins if she could keep Maya with her while I spoke to the principal.
She agreed.
Before I left, Maya caught my sleeve.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Am I allowed to use Mommy's name?""
I crouched.
"Of course you are. It's part of your story.""
She looked at the paper.
"Then why did Vanessa say it wasn't mine?""
I didn't have an answer that a nine-year-old should ever have to hear.
I kissed her forehead.
"Because she was wrong.""
At Daniel's office, a new development was waiting.
He had received a copy of an email sent to the insurance company.
The sender had identified herself as Vanessa Carter, legal guardian of Maya Emily Carter.
The message requested information about changing the policy's authorized contact.
Attached was a scanned document.
A supposed guardianship certificate.
But Maya's legal name was simply Maya Carter.
The middle name Emily had never appeared on her birth certificate.
I looked at Daniel.
"Where did she get that name?""
He pointed to the final attachment.
It was a draft birth certificate amendment.
The document requested that Maya's legal name be changed to Emily Rose Carter.
The applicant's signature was Vanessa's.
And the reason given was:
*To align the child's legal identity with the deceased mother's estate and simplify inheritance administration.*
I stared at the screen.
"She was trying to change Maya's name?""
"Apparently.""
"Without my permission?""
"Yes.""
I leaned back.
"Can she do that?""
"No. Not through this document.""
Daniel opened another file.
"But the insurance company has received something else.""
"What?""
"A request to release the full policy proceeds to a temporary custodial account.""
"Whose account?""
Daniel turned his monitor toward me.
The recipient's name appeared in bold.
*Bright Future Consulting.*
I stood so abruptly my chair rolled backward.
"How close did they get?""
"Fortunately, the insurer flagged the request.""
I looked at the photograph of Emily again.
Then I remembered the words written on the back.
She has to believe she is Emily's daughter first.
I suddenly understood why Vanessa had wanted Maya to practice the name.
It wasn't a harmless exercise.
She wanted a child to participate in a financial arrangement she didn't understand.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Mrs. Collins.
*Marcus, Vanessa just arrived at the school. She says she has permission to take Maya home.*
I called her immediately.
"Don't release my daughter.""
"I haven't.""
"Call the principal. I'm coming.""
Daniel stood.
"I'm going with you.""
As we reached the door, my phone rang again.
This time, it was Caleb.
His voice was shaking.
"Mr. Marcus?""
"Caleb? What's wrong?""
"Mom found out I told you everything.""
"Where are you?""
"At home.""
"Are you safe?""
He hesitated.
Then he whispered:
"She's packing.""
"Packing what?""
"Our bags.""
I stopped.
"What?""
May you like
Caleb's next words made my blood run cold.
"She said we're leaving before you find out what happened six years ago.""
