Chapter 13: The Warning Emily Left Behind
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
The officer held Emily's letter in a clear evidence sleeve. Daniel stood beside him, reading the final sentence again.
*If Marcus ever marries Vanessa Carter, I want this letter opened immediately.*
I felt as if someone had pulled the floor out from under me.
"Why?"" I whispered.
Vanessa looked away.
My mother was crying.
Robert, who had arrived moments earlier, stepped into the room and stared at the letter.
"That's Emily's handwriting," he said.
Daniel raised a hand.
"Nobody touches it until it's properly documented.""
The officer photographed both sides before removing the letter.
There were four pages.
The first explained Emily's wishes regarding Maya's inheritance. The second described the circumstances surrounding her illness. The third contained instructions for Robert. The fourth was addressed directly to me.
Daniel read the first page aloud.
Emily had written that she wanted Maya to remain financially protected, regardless of whom I eventually married. She had created separate safeguards because she feared someone might attempt to influence a grieving father into surrendering control of his daughter's assets.
Then came a paragraph that made my hands go cold.
I have reason to believe Vanessa is interested in Maya's inheritance. She has asked questions about the insurance policy, the trust, and what would happen if I died before Maya was old enough to understand these things.
I looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
"That's not true.""
Daniel continued.
I don't know whether she intends to take the money herself or whether someone is advising her. But I have heard her discussing financial arrangements with Stephen. I have also heard her suggest that Maya would be better off with a different family.
Robert closed his eyes.
I could barely breathe.
Emily had seen it.
She had tried to warn us.
And we had all failed her.
The third page contained instructions for Robert.
If Marcus remarried, Robert was to retain copies of all estate documents and ensure that Maya's inheritance remained under independent administration. If Marcus became incapacitated, Robert was to seek legal protection for Maya before anyone else could intervene.
The fourth page was mine.
Daniel handed it to me.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My love,
If you're reading this, I hope you've found happiness again. I hope Maya has grown up surrounded by people who make her laugh, who encourage her drawings, and who remind her every day that she is loved.
My eyes blurred.
But if you married Vanessa, I need you to understand that I didn't write this because I wanted to control your future. I wrote it because I saw something you couldn't see.
I stopped reading.
Daniel waited.
I continued.
*Vanessa doesn't look at Maya the way a mother looks at a child. She looks at her as an obstacle. She has asked about money that doesn't belong to her.
She has asked whether Maya could be declared incapable of managing her inheritance. She has even suggested that you might eventually decide it would be easier to raise Caleb and Lily without Maya's financial responsibilities.*
My throat tightened.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did you say that?""
She folded her arms.
"Emily was sick. She was suspicious of everyone.""
"Answer me.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"She didn't understand what was happening.""
Daniel continued reading the final paragraph.
If you ever discover that Maya is being punished for having resources, memories, or a mother who loved her, please don't dismiss it as jealousy. Please don't ask her to be patient until things improve. Children remember who protected them when they were powerless.
I lowered the letter.
There was one final sentence.
And Marcus, if Vanessa ever tries to separate you from Maya, remember that I warned you because I trusted you to choose your daughter.
I couldn't hold back the tears.
For six years, I had believed I was building a new family.
I had ignored the small signs because I wanted everyone to get along.
And Maya had paid for that mistake.
The officer turned toward Vanessa.
"Mrs. Carter, we need you to accompany us while we clarify several matters.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You're arresting me because of a letter?""
"No one has said that," Daniel replied.
"But the letter is relevant to an ongoing investigation involving suspected financial fraud, forged documents, and attempted interference with a child's inheritance.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Marcus, tell them this is ridiculous.""
I didn't move.
"Tell them, Marcus!""
I looked at the officer.
"I want every document preserved. I want every account involving Maya investigated. And I want my daughter protected.""
Vanessa's face changed.
"You would destroy this family?""
I stared at her.
"You destroyed it when you made my daughter believe she had to pay for a place to sleep.""
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
The officer escorted her outside.
My mother remained by the doorway.
"Marcus, please.""
I turned toward her.
"I need to know why you helped her.""
"I didn't know everything.""
"But you knew enough.""
She nodded, crying.
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Vanessa said if I didn't cooperate, she'd tell you that I had helped Emily change her will without your knowledge. She said she'd make it look like I had stolen from Maya.""
I stared at her.
"Did you?""
"No!""
"Did you receive money from Northstar?""
"No. I signed papers because she told me they were necessary for Maya's education.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"We'll need copies of everything you signed, Mrs. Carter. And we'll need you to make a full statement.""
Evelyn nodded.
"I'll do whatever I can.""
I wasn't ready to forgive her.
But I believed she was finally telling the truth.
That evening, I went home and found Maya sitting on the floor beside her art supplies.
She looked up.
"Is Vanessa coming back?""
I sat beside her.
"No, sweetheart.""
"Is she mad at me?""
I took her hands.
"Nothing that happened was your fault.""
She looked down at her fingers.
"Did Mommy know?""
I hesitated.
Then I showed her a photograph of Emily's letter.
"Your mom knew she wanted you protected. She made sure there were people who could help.""
Maya studied the photograph.
"Did she write something for me?""
I nodded.
"She did.""
I read her the words Emily had written about drawing, laughter, and being loved.
Maya listened without moving.
When I finished, she leaned against my shoulder.
"Can I paint again?""
I kissed the top of her head.
"Whenever you want.""
She looked toward the corner where the damaged painting had been stored.
"I want to finish that one.""
I nodded.
"We'll get it restored.""
Then she asked a question that nearly broke me.
"Daddy, if I had been nicer to Vanessa, would she have liked me?""
I pulled her close.
"No, baby. You could have been perfect, and it still wouldn't have made her choices your fault.""
Maya began to cry.
I held her until her breathing settled.
Later, Daniel called.
The investigation had taken another turn.
The hospital had recovered an archived document showing that Emily had requested a private consultation with an independent attorney shortly before her death.
That attorney had never been contacted during the estate proceedings.
His name was Thomas Reed.
Daniel had found his office address.
"He may have the original will," Daniel said.
I looked at Maya sleeping on the couch.
"Then let's find him.""
Daniel paused.
"There's something else. Thomas Reed has been trying to contact your family for years.""
"Why?""
"He says Emily gave him a sealed statement explaining exactly what Vanessa did during her final week.""
I gripped the phone.
"What did he say was inside?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"He said it contains the name of the person who first introduced Vanessa to Emily's financial arrangements.""
I stared at the dark window.
May you like
Because if Emily had been warning us about Vanessa before she died, someone else might have helped Vanessa get close enough to hurt her.
And I had a terrible feeling I already knew who that person was.
