Chapter 5: The Eighteen-Thousand-Dollar Secret

I called Daniel from the driveway.

I didn't want another argument inside the house, especially with Caleb standing between his parents.

"Daniel, I need you to listen carefully.""

I explained everything.

The photograph.

The storage receipt.

The proposed sale.

The transfer request for eighteen thousand dollars.

When I finished, Daniel was silent for several seconds.

"Marcus, do not touch the trust account yourself. I'll contact the trustee immediately.""

"Can Vanessa legally access it?""

"Not based on anything you've shown me. Emily's parents established that trust with independent management. Vanessa isn't listed as a beneficiary or authorized signatory.""

"Then how did she get a transfer request?""

"That's what we need to establish.""

I looked through the kitchen window.

Vanessa was speaking rapidly to Caleb, gesturing toward the stairs.

"Daniel, I want her away from Maya.""

"Then we need to make arrangements properly. Has Maya told you about any threats or mistreatment beyond the chores and financial deductions?""

I remembered her red hands.

Her fear.

The teacher's comments.

The notebook.

"Yes. I'm documenting everything.""

"Good. I'll arrange a meeting tomorrow morning. In the meantime, preserve every document and don't let anyone destroy evidence.""

I ended the call.

Then I dialed the trust administrator.

A woman named Patricia answered.

I had spoken to her only twice since Emily's death.

"Mr. Carter?""

"Patricia, I need to verify something urgently.""

"Of course.""

"Has anyone requested an eighteen-thousand-dollar transfer from Maya's trust?""

There was a pause.

"Actually, yes.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"When?""

"The request arrived yesterday afternoon.""

"Who submitted it?""

"The request was submitted through the online portal using the credentials associated with the guardian information on file.""

I closed my eyes.

"Was it approved?""

"Not yet. The request triggered a verification review because the recipient account doesn't match any previously approved educational provider.""

"Who is the recipient?""

"Bright Future Consulting.""

I looked toward the house.

"Can you freeze the request?""

"It has already been placed on hold.""

"Thank you.""

Patricia hesitated.

"Mr. Carter, there's something else.""

"What?""

"The application includes an attached invoice.""

"For what?""

"Educational consulting services and specialized behavioral support.""

I frowned.

"Behavioral support?""

"Yes. It states that Maya requires private intervention services.""

I felt a chill run down my back.

"Who wrote that?""

"The document is signed by Vanessa Carter.""

I stared at the phone.

"My daughter has never received behavioral treatment.""

"I understand. That's why the request was flagged.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

Then I went back inside.

Vanessa was sitting at the dining table.

Caleb had disappeared upstairs.

She looked up when I entered.

"Have you called your lawyer?""

"Yes.""

She shook her head.

"You really are determined to destroy this family.""

I placed the transfer request on the table.

"Why did you claim Maya needed behavioral treatment?""

Vanessa's eyes flickered toward the document.

"She does.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"She's emotionally unstable. She has attachment issues. She manipulates people by crying.""

"She's nine.""

"That doesn't mean she can't have problems.""

"Has she ever been evaluated by a professional?""

Vanessa said nothing.

"Have you taken her to a doctor?""

Still nothing.

"Then why did you submit an invoice for treatment that never happened?""

Vanessa stood.

"I was trying to get her help.""

"With an eighteen-thousand-dollar payment to your brother?""

She looked toward the window.

I continued.

"Patricia confirmed the transfer was flagged. The trust administrator has copies of everything.""

Vanessa's face tightened.

"You're making it sound criminal.""

"I'm asking you to explain.""

She walked around the table.

"Do you know how much pressure I've been under?""

I stared at her.

"You've been under so much pressure that you invented a medical expense for a child who isn't yours?""

Her face hardened.

"She's my stepdaughter.""

"Then why have you treated her like a bill that needs to be paid?""

Vanessa slapped the table.

"Because everything goes to Maya!""

I didn't move.

She continued, her voice rising.

"Emily's parents give her money. You give her money. Your mother gives her money. She has a trust, an allowance, expensive art supplies, and everyone treats her like she's made of glass!""

"She's a child.""

"And my children get whatever is left!""

I stared at her.

"Caleb and Lily have never been denied food, clothes, school supplies, or anything they need.""

"That's not the point!""

"Then what is?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with angry tears.

"You're building a future for a child who isn't even mine while my children have to share everything.""

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I asked quietly:

"Did you ever love Maya?""

Her expression changed.

She looked away.

That silence answered more than any argument could.

I picked up the documents.

"Daniel will contact you.""

She stepped forward.

"Marcus, wait.""

I stopped.

"Please. We can work this out.""

"How?""

"I'll return the money.""

"Which money?""

"All of it.""

I looked at her.

"Do you know how much you've taken?""

She didn't answer.

"Do you?""

Her shoulders dropped.

"Marcus, please.""

I walked upstairs.

Maya was sitting on her bedroom floor, arranging colored pencils into neat rows.

Her painting fragments were spread across a towel.

When she saw me, she quickly covered them.

"Sorry, Daddy.""

I crouched.

"Why are you sorry?""

"Because it's messy.""

I gently moved the towel.

"You don't have to hide your art from me.""

She looked at the pieces.

"Vanessa says I make too much mess.""

I swallowed.

"You're allowed to make art, sweetheart.""

She picked up a small blue fragment.

"Do you think Mommy would still like it?""

I felt my throat tighten.

"She would love it.""

Maya looked at me.

"Even though it's broken?""

I nodded.

"Especially because you made it.""

She leaned against my shoulder.

For a few minutes, we sat quietly.

Then she spoke.

"Daddy, can I ask you something?""

"Anything.""

"If I don't have enough money, will you still let me stay here?""

I froze.

The question hit harder than anything Vanessa had said.

I turned toward my daughter.

"Why would you ever think you need money to live here?""

Maya's eyes dropped.

"Because Vanessa said families have to pay their way.""

I took both her hands.

"Listen to me carefully. This is your home. You don't pay rent.

You don't owe anyone for your food. You don't owe anyone for your bed, your clothes, or your love.""

She stared at me.

"Promise?""

"I promise.""

She slowly nodded.

Then she reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

"Daddy, I wanted to show you something.""

I unfolded it.

It was a drawing.

A small house.

A purple tree.

A little girl standing outside the front door.

But unlike the painting Vanessa had destroyed, this one had no father, no mother, and no family sitting together.

Just the girl.

And above the roof, in careful handwriting, Maya had written:

*A HOME WHERE NOBODY GETS MAD WHEN I EXIST.*

I couldn't breathe for a moment.

"Sweetheart, when did you draw this?""

"Last week.""

"Why?""

She shrugged.

"I thought maybe if I drew it, I could remember what it looked like.""

I held her close.

Downstairs, I heard Vanessa shouting into her phone.

I couldn't make out every word.

But one sentence came through clearly.

"Stephen, you need to come here tonight. Marcus knows about the account.""

I looked at Maya.

Then toward the bedroom door.

Something told me the worst part hadn't happened yet.

And I was right.

At 9:42 p.m., my phone rang.

It was Daniel.

"Marcus, I've just received something from the trust administrator.""

"What?""

"The eighteen-thousand-dollar request isn't the only attempted transaction.""

I sat up.

"What do you mean?""

"There's another account linked to Maya's trust. A custodial savings account.""

I remembered the money Emily's parents had deposited over the years.

"How much is in it?""

"According to the latest statement, approximately $64,000.""

I stared at the wall.

"Has anyone accessed it?""

Daniel paused.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

"An individual using a power-of-attorney document dated six months ago.""

I felt the room tilt.

"That's impossible. I never signed a power of attorney for Vanessa.""

"I know.""

"Then whose signature is on it?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Marcus, the document has your name.""

I looked at the bedroom door.

"That's not my signature.""

"I believe you. But the person who notarized it is listed as Stephen Carter.""

Vanessa's brother.

I closed my eyes.

Then Daniel said something even worse.

"The document was submitted with a second attachment. It's a letter claiming that Maya voluntarily surrendered her interest in the account.""

My blood turned cold.

"Who signed it?""

Daniel was silent for a moment.

May you like

Then he answered.

"Someone signed your daughter's name.""
