Chapter 3: My Brother's Confession

"Then who did?""

I stood in my office, holding the phone so tightly my knuckles turned white.

Michael didn't answer.

"Who started it?"" I repeated.

He sighed.

"Daniel, we need to talk in person.""

"No. You can talk right now.""

"Not over the phone.""

"Four years of transactions, Michael. Four years of money disappearing from a trust Laura created for her daughter. I think you've had enough time to prepare your explanation.""

He lowered his voice.

"Don't do anything stupid.""

I laughed once.

"My daughter slept outside last night because your girlfriend decided she didn't belong in her own house. You think I'm worried about doing something stupid?""

There was a pause.

Then he said, "I'm coming over.""

I ended the call.

Eleanor had been watching me.

"Did he admit anything?""

"He wants to meet.""

"Don't meet him alone.""

"I won't.""

She nodded toward the bank statements.

"There's another issue we need to discuss.""

She pulled out a second folder.

This one contained copies of several legal documents.

"The transfers are only part of the problem. Someone has been attempting to change the legal guardianship arrangements for Maya.""

I stared at her.

"Guardianship?""

"An application was submitted requesting that you be declared financially and emotionally unfit to manage your daughter's affairs.""

I felt as if the floor had shifted beneath me.

"Who submitted it?""

Eleanor turned the document around.

Vanessa's name appeared beneath the signature line.

I couldn't speak.

"She was planning to take Maya?""

"At the very least, she was attempting to obtain legal authority over her financial interests. We need to determine the full extent of her intentions.""

I stood and walked to the door.

Then I heard small footsteps.

Maya appeared in the hallway wearing her yellow pajamas.

"Daddy?""

I immediately put the documents down.

"Hey, sweetheart. Why aren't you sleeping?""

She rubbed her eyes.

"Can I have breakfast?""

"Of course.""

She looked at Eleanor.

"Is that the lady from yesterday?""

Eleanor smiled gently.

"Yes, sweetheart. I'm a friend of your mommy's.""

Maya approached her.

"Did Mommy send you?""

Eleanor's expression softened.

"Your mommy asked me to look after something very important.""

Maya hugged her teddy bear.

"What?""

Eleanor looked at me before answering.

"You.""

Maya seemed to think about that.

Then she nodded.

"Mommy always said Daddy would keep me safe.""

I turned away before either of them could see my eyes.

At 10:30, Michael arrived.

He didn't knock.

He walked straight into the house using the spare key I'd given him years earlier.

"Daniel?""

I met him in the living room.

He wore an expensive navy suit and carried a leather briefcase.

Behind him, Vanessa came down the stairs.

She looked relieved to see him.

"Michael, thank God.""

I noticed something immediately.

They didn't look like two people who had just discovered each other at the scene of a disaster.

They looked like partners arriving for a meeting.

"Sit down," I said.

Michael glanced at Eleanor.

"Why is she here?""

"Because she's representing Maya.""

He frowned.

"She's just a child. This is a family matter.""

Eleanor closed her folder.

"That's precisely why she needs legal protection.""

Michael placed his briefcase on the coffee table.

"Daniel, I know this looks bad.""

I pointed at the bank statements.

"Then explain it.""

He sat down and loosened his tie.

"Laura was sick. You were devastated. Somebody had to make practical decisions.""

"Practical decisions like stealing from a six-year-old?""

"Nobody stole anything.""

I pushed the statements toward him.

"Explain the transfers.""

He glanced at them.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head slightly.

That small movement told me more than any confession could have.

Michael finally spoke.

"The money was being moved temporarily.""

"To your personal account?""

"It was an investment.""

"Without my permission?""

"Laura's trust had more money than Maya could ever spend.""

I stepped closer.

"That wasn't your decision.""

He stood up.

"You're acting like I wanted to hurt her.""

I stared at him.

"You knew she was being put outside last night?""

His jaw tightened.

"Vanessa told me Maya had been difficult.""

"She's six!""

"Daniel, listen to yourself. You're destroying your marriage over one bad evening.""

I pointed toward the staircase.

"She packed my daughter's clothes and locked the door.""

Vanessa interrupted.

"Because I couldn't take it anymore!""

"Then you should have left," I said.

"Not her.""

Michael rubbed his forehead.

"Look, we can fix this. I'll return the money.""

"All of it?""

"Most of it.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"Most?""

He looked at Vanessa again.

She suddenly stepped forward.

"Daniel, you're making a terrible mistake. If this becomes a legal issue, you're going to lose everything.""

I stared at her.

"Is that a threat?""

"It's a warning.""

Eleanor opened her folder.

"Actually, Mrs. Carter, I believe you should be careful about making further statements.""

Vanessa turned toward her.

"Stay out of my marriage.""

Eleanor remained calm.

"I'm here because your actions may have violated the terms of a trust established for a minor.""

Michael grabbed his briefcase.

"We're leaving.""

"Not yet," I said.

He stopped.

I held up Laura's letter.

"She knew about you.""

His expression changed.

For one brief second, the confidence disappeared from his face.

"She was sick," he said.

"She knew you were taking money.""

"She misunderstood.""

"She wrote your name in this letter.""

Michael stared at me.

Then he looked at the paper.

"Where did you get that?""

"From Laura's attorney.""

He took a step toward me.

"Give me that.""

"No.""

His voice dropped.

"Daniel. Give me the letter.""

I moved it behind my back.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed his arm.

"Michael, don't.""

He froze.

And that was when I understood.

They were both terrified of what Laura had written.

But there was something else.

Something they hadn't expected me to discover.

Eleanor quietly opened the second folder and removed a photograph.

"Mr. Carter," she said, "there is one more thing you should know.""

She placed the photograph on the coffee table.

It showed Laura sitting in a hospital bed.

Beside her was a little girl.

Not Maya.

A different child.

The girl looked about seven years old.

On the back of the photograph, Laura had written a date.

It was two weeks before she died.

And beneath the date were six words.

*Find her before Michael does.*

I looked at Eleanor.

"Who is that child?""

Eleanor's face grew serious.

"Her name is Sophie.""

"Why did Laura photograph her?""

"Because Sophie is connected to the money your brother has been taking.""

I turned toward Michael.

His face had gone completely pale.

Vanessa whispered, "You said she would never find out.""

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then Eleanor placed one final document on the table.

A birth certificate.

The mother's name was Laura Carter.

The father's name was blank.

And the child's date of birth was seven years before Laura died.

I looked at the photograph again.

Then at my brother.

"Michael," I whispered, "what have you done?""

He didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward the staircase where Maya was standing.

May you like

And he said something I will never forget.

"Daniel, before you judge me, you need to know that Sophie is your daughter.""
