Chapter 4: The Daughter Laura Never Told Me About

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

My brother stood in the middle of my living room, his hands trembling. Vanessa had backed away from him, while Eleanor quietly gathered the documents scattered across the coffee table.

I looked at the birth certificate again.

Laura Carter.

Seven years before her death.

Sophie.

And Michael was telling me the little girl in that photograph was mine.

"Explain," I said.

Michael swallowed.

"Daniel, I know how this sounds.""

"Then don't waste my time telling me how it sounds. Tell me what happened.""

He looked toward the staircase.

Maya was standing there, holding her teddy bear.

"Daddy?""

I immediately softened my voice.

"Go back to your room, sweetheart. I'll come get you in a minute.""

"But is Uncle Michael angry?""

"No, sweetheart. Everything is okay.""

It wasn't.

Not even close.

When Maya disappeared, I turned back to my brother.

"Start talking.""

Michael sat down.

He rubbed both hands over his face before speaking.

"Seven years ago, Laura and I made a mistake.""

I stared at him.

"What kind of mistake?""

He looked down.

"We slept together.""

The room seemed to shrink.

I remembered that year.

Laura and I had been married for three years. I was working ridiculous hours, trying to build my construction company into something that could support a family. Michael was practically living at our house because he'd lost his apartment.

He had been my best man.

My brother.

The person I trusted more than anyone.

"Was Laura pregnant when you slept together?""

Michael nodded.

"And you knew?""

"Yes.""

I stepped toward him.

"Did you know Sophie existed?""

"I found out later.""

"How much later?""

"After Laura gave birth.""

I felt sick.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Michael looked at Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

"Don't look at me," she said.

"I wasn't even involved back then.""

Eleanor interrupted.

"That's not entirely accurate, Mrs. Carter.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"What does that mean?""

Eleanor opened the folder.

"Your name appears in correspondence related to Sophie's guardianship.""

I looked at her.

"Vanessa knew?""

"She appears to have known about Sophie for at least three years.""

I turned toward my wife.

"How long have you known?""

Vanessa's lips parted.

Then she sighed.

"Daniel, it wasn't my secret to tell.""

"You knew I might have another daughter?""

"I knew Laura had complicated things in her past.""

"Complicated things?""

I pointed at the birth certificate.

"That's a child, Vanessa. Not a complicated thing.""

Michael stood.

"Stop attacking her. This is between me and you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You've spent four years taking money from my daughter, and now you're telling me you fathered another child with my wife?""

"Laura was unhappy.""

I froze.

"What?""

"She said you were never home. She said she felt alone.""

I remembered those years.

The late nights.

The missed dinners.

The hospital visits.

Laura sitting at our kitchen table with untouched food because she wanted to talk when I finally walked through the door.

I had been so focused on building a future for our family that I hadn't noticed how lonely she had become.

But none of that justified what they had done.

"Did you love her?"" I asked.

Michael looked away.

"Yes.""

The answer hit harder than I expected.

"And Sophie?""

His voice cracked.

"She's my daughter.""

I looked at Eleanor.

"Then why does her birth certificate have no father listed?""

"Because Laura refused to put Michael's name on it," Eleanor explained.

"She wanted to protect the child from a complicated family situation.""

Michael shook his head.

"She promised me I'd be involved.""

Eleanor gave him a cold look.

"Laura also documented that you repeatedly demanded access to her finances.""

Michael's face hardened.

"She was trying to keep me away from my own child.""

"Then why were you taking money from Maya's trust?"" I asked.

He didn't answer.

Vanessa finally spoke.

"Because Laura left too much money to Maya.""

I slowly turned toward her.

"What?""

She folded her arms.

"Daniel, think about it. You have two daughters. One has everything. The other has nothing.""

"That's why you stole from Maya?""

"We were trying to create a fair arrangement.""

"By transferring her inheritance into Michael's account?""

Vanessa looked at me as if I were being unreasonable.

"Someone had to think about Sophie.""

I shook my head.

"You could have told me.""

"You wouldn't have understood.""

"You're right. I wouldn't have understood why my wife and brother were secretly plotting against a child.""

Eleanor placed another document on the table.

"There's something else.""

She opened it.

It was a letter Laura had written to her shortly before her death.

I don't want Daniel to discover Sophie's existence through a scandal. If he ever learns the truth, he deserves to hear it from someone who can explain what happened without turning two innocent children against each other.

My eyes blurred.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Eleanor looked genuinely saddened.

"Laura believed she would have time to explain everything herself. She was waiting for the right moment.""

I sat down.

For four years, I'd believed I knew everything about the woman I had loved.

Apparently, I didn't.

But one thing was becoming painfully clear.

Laura had made mistakes.

Michael had betrayed me.

And Vanessa had used those secrets to manipulate my daughter's future.

I looked at my brother.

"Where is Sophie now?""

Michael hesitated.

"With her foster family.""

I stood up.

"What?""

"Daniel, she's been in temporary care for months.""

"Why?""

He looked toward the floor.

"Because Vanessa and I couldn't agree on what to do.""

Vanessa snapped.

"Don't put this on me!""

Michael turned toward her.

"You said the money would cover everything!""

"Because you promised you'd get custody!""

Eleanor immediately raised her hand.

"Enough.""

But the damage was done.

I looked between them.

"What money?""

Neither answered.

Eleanor pulled out a document.

"A payment of $60,000 was made from an account connected to Maya's trust to a private family placement agency.""

My blood ran cold.

"You used my daughter's money to pay someone connected to Sophie's placement?""

"We needed legal assistance," Michael muttered.

I looked at the photograph of the little girl.

A seven-year-old child.

A child who had apparently been caught in the middle of a secret that began long before she could understand it.

I picked up the picture.

"Find out where she is," I told Eleanor.

Michael looked up.

"Why?""

I met his eyes.

"Because whatever happened between you, Laura, and me, that little girl doesn't deserve to pay for it.""

Then I looked toward the staircase.

"And neither does Maya.""

My phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

"Mr. Carter?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Rachel. I'm Sophie's caseworker. I'm calling because we need to discuss an emergency.""

My grip tightened.

"What emergency?""

There was a brief silence.

May you like

Then she said:

"Sophie disappeared from her placement home this morning.""
