Chapter 7: My Father's Final Betrayal

I read the clause three times.
Then I read it again.
My father had known.
He had known Sophie existed, known she was his granddaughter, and deliberately arranged his will so that I would remain ignorant.
"That can't be right," I whispered.
Eleanor sat across from me.
"I'm afraid it is.""
I looked at Michael.
He was staring at the floor, his eyes red.
"Did you know?"" I asked.
He didn't answer.
"Michael, look at me. Did you know Sophie was Dad's daughter?""
He slowly nodded.
The room seemed to tilt.
I grabbed the edge of the kitchen counter.
"You knew?""
"Daniel, I was trying to protect you.""
"Protect me from what? My own family?""
Michael wiped his face.
"Dad told me everything before he died. He said Laura had confessed to him years ago. He knew Sophie was his granddaughter.""
I stared at him.
"And you kept quiet?""
"I didn't know how to tell you.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You had four years.""
Michael looked toward Sophie.
"She was just a baby when everything happened. Dad wanted to make sure she was provided for.""
"Then why didn't he tell me?""
"Because he was ashamed.""
I shook my head.
My father had been a difficult man.
He was the kind of man who believed apologies were unnecessary and affection was something people should understand without hearing it.
But he had always taught me that family meant telling the truth.
Apparently, that rule didn't apply to him.
Eleanor turned the will toward me.
"There's another provision.""
I looked down.
The document stated that Sophie would receive the estate through a protected trust. The money could only be accessed by an independent trustee until she turned twenty-five.
But there was a condition attached.
If anyone attempted to conceal her identity, misuse her inheritance, or interfere with her legal guardianship, the trustee was required to investigate.
I looked up.
"Who is the trustee?""
Eleanor hesitated.
"Your father appointed Michael.""
I turned toward my brother.
He closed his eyes.
"Of course he did.""
"Daniel, I didn't know about the money transfers at first.""
"At first?""
Michael looked defeated.
"After Dad died, Vanessa contacted me. She said she could help arrange Sophie's future. She knew about the estate. She knew Laura had left documents with Eleanor.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She stood near the doorway, her arms folded tightly across her chest.
"How did you know about my father's estate?""
She didn't answer.
Eleanor did.
"Because Mrs. Carter submitted a request to become Sophie's temporary financial representative.""
I stared at her.
"You tried to control both girls' inheritances?""
Vanessa raised her chin.
"I was trying to create a stable future.""
"For whom?""
"For everyone!""
She pointed at me.
"You had a business, a house, a daughter, and a wife. Michael had nothing. Sophie had nothing. I was the only person thinking about how unfair everything was.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"You stole from Maya to give Michael money, then tried to control Sophie's inheritance too.""
Vanessa's voice cracked.
"I didn't steal from Sophie.""
Eleanor opened another folder.
"Actually, you attempted to transfer $190,000 from the estate's preliminary distribution account.""
Vanessa went pale.
Michael stared at her.
"You told me that money was for legal expenses.""
"It was.""
"Where did it go?""
She looked away.
Eleanor placed a bank statement on the counter.
"Most of it went to an account belonging to a company registered under your maiden name.""
Michael stood.
"You told me there was no money left!""
Vanessa snapped back.
"You were supposed to be the trustee! You were supposed to handle it!""
I watched them argue.
Two people who had spent years pretending to be victims were now fighting because neither trusted the other.
Then Sophie spoke.
"Are you going to send me away?""
Everyone stopped.
She stood beside the couch, holding her rabbit.
I immediately walked toward her.
"No, sweetheart.""
"But Vanessa said I couldn't stay unless I was useful.""
My stomach twisted.
"What did she mean?""
Sophie looked down.
"She said I had to tell the judge that Uncle Michael was a good daddy. She said if I didn't, nobody would pay for my school.""
Michael covered his face.
Vanessa looked furious.
"That's not what I said.""
Sophie flinched.
I stepped between them.
"Don't speak to her like that.""
Eleanor quietly contacted the caseworker.
Within minutes, we had confirmation that the police were sending officers to the house.
Vanessa tried to leave.
This time, I didn't stop her.
Two officers entered through the front door just as she reached the hallway.
They asked her to remain while they investigated the unauthorized documents and the circumstances surrounding Sophie's removal from temporary care.
Michael was also asked to accompany them for questioning.
As they escorted Vanessa outside, she turned toward me.
"Daniel, you're going to regret choosing those girls over me.""
I looked at her.
"No. I regret letting you make them feel they had to compete for my love.""
She said nothing.
When the door closed, the house finally became quiet.
I sat beside Sophie.
"Would you like something to eat?""
She nodded.
"Can I have pancakes?""
I smiled.
"Absolutely.""
She hesitated.
"Can I have two?""
I felt my eyes sting.
"You can have three.""
For the first time since I had met her, Sophie smiled.
While I prepared breakfast, Eleanor made a call to the estate's independent legal administrator.
She returned ten minutes later.
"Daniel, there's something unusual about your father's will.""
I turned off the stove.
"What now?""
"Your father added a handwritten instruction that was never included in the original probate summary.""
She placed a sealed envelope on the table.
It was addressed to me.
I opened it.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then I have failed to tell you the truth while I was alive.
I know you will be angry. You have every right to be.
But there is something you must understand about Laura.
She didn't just leave Sophie with a secret.
She left you with a warning.
My fingers tightened around the paper.
The final paragraph was underlined.
Your wife Vanessa was not the first person to discover Sophie's existence. Someone in our family knew long before any of us.
I looked up.
"Who?""
Eleanor pointed toward the bottom of the page.
There was a name.
*Margaret Carter.*
My mother.
The woman who had died when I was seventeen.
May you like
And beneath her name, my father had written six words.
*She knew who Sophie's real father was.*
