Chapter 6: The Secret Laura Left Behind

Sophie didn't come downstairs immediately.

She remained on the landing, holding a small stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Michael stood several steps below her.

"Sweetheart, it's Daddy.""

Sophie shook her head.

"You're not my daddy.""

Michael stopped.

I watched him struggle to find an answer.

"Yes, I am. I know things have been confusing, but—"

"You said you would come last week.""

He looked down.

"I know.""

"You said you would come on my birthday.""

Michael's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Sophie wiped her nose with the sleeve of her sweater.

"And you didn't.""

The silence was unbearable.

I slowly climbed two steps.

"Hi, Sophie. My name is Daniel.""

She looked at me.

"I know.""

"You do?""

She nodded.

"Mommy had your picture.""

My chest tightened.

"She did?""

"She kept it in a blue box.""

I glanced at Michael.

He looked devastated.

Sophie continued.

"She said you were kind. She said you had a little girl named Maya.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"That's right.""

"Is Maya your daughter?""

"Yes.""

Sophie looked down at her shoes.

"Then she's my sister?""

I couldn't answer immediately.

Technically, yes.

But I didn't want to burden a frightened child with adult explanations.

"Yes, sweetheart. She is.""

Sophie looked toward the hallway.

"Does she know about me?""

"She knows there's another little girl we need to help.""

Sophie considered that.

Then she slowly descended the stairs.

She stopped when she reached the bottom.

"Are you going to take me away?""

"No.""

"Vanessa said everyone would take me away if I talked.""

I knelt so we were at the same height.

"Nobody is going to punish you for telling the truth.""

Sophie hugged her rabbit tighter.

"She said I had to be good.""

I looked at Michael.

"What did Vanessa tell her?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"I don't know everything she said.""

Sophie answered for him.

"She said if I told people about the money, they wouldn't let Daddy see me.""

I felt anger rise again.

"What money?""

Sophie looked toward the kitchen.

"Vanessa showed me a paper. She said it was money Mommy left for me.""

Eleanor entered the house behind us.

She had just spoken with the police.

When she heard Sophie's words, she immediately knelt beside the little girl.

"Sophie, do you remember what the paper looked like?""

Sophie nodded.

"It had my name.""

"Was it blue?""

Sophie looked surprised.

"Yes.""

Eleanor turned toward me.

"Daniel, I think we need to find that document.""

We searched the kitchen.

A stack of envelopes sat inside a drawer beneath the counter.

Most were ordinary household bills.

But at the bottom was a blue folder.

Eleanor opened it.

Inside were copies of trust documents, medical records, and several pages of bank statements.

She turned one page.

Then another.

Her expression changed.

"What is it?"" I asked.

She placed the paper on the counter.

It was a transfer authorization.

The money had originated from Maya's trust.

But the recipient wasn't Michael.

It was a company called Carter Family Holdings.

I recognized the name.

It was a business Michael had established years earlier.

"How much?"" I asked.

Eleanor checked the total.

"Approximately $280,000.""

I stared at her.

"That's not possible.""

"These transfers were made over several years.""

I looked at Michael.

"Where did the money go?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

I stepped closer.

"Don't lie to me.""

He raised both hands.

"Daniel, I didn't handle every transaction.""

"Who did?""

He looked at the folder.

Then at Sophie.

"Vanessa.""

I turned toward the kitchen doorway.

Vanessa was standing there.

She had entered so quietly that none of us had noticed.

Her face was pale.

"You're making a mistake," she said.

Eleanor closed the folder.

"Mrs. Carter, the police are on their way.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Daniel, please. Just listen.""

I didn't move.

"Did you transfer $280,000 from Maya's trust?""

"It wasn't like that.""

"Did you?""

She swallowed.

"Some of it was used for household expenses.""

"Household expenses?""

"Your business was struggling. We needed money.""

I shook my head.

"My business has never had access to Maya's trust.""

"Because you never asked!""

I stared at her.

"Why would I ask my six-year-old daughter for her inheritance?""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"Because you were always giving everything to her!""

The words came out so quickly that even Michael looked shocked.

Vanessa continued.

"Every holiday. Every birthday. Every conversation.

Laura this, Laura that. Maya this, Maya that. I was living in a house where I was never going to matter.""

I felt strangely calm.

"So you decided to take money from her?""

"I deserved something.""

"From a child?""

She looked away.

Then she pointed toward Sophie.

"And what about her? Laura left her with nothing. I was trying to help her too.""

Eleanor stepped forward.

"You don't help one child by stealing from another.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"You don't understand what Laura did.""

I stared at her.

"What did Laura do?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"She left instructions. She left money. She left everything to Maya. And she made sure nobody else could touch it.""

"Because Maya was her daughter.""

"Sophie was her daughter too!""

I looked at Sophie.

The little girl was standing behind the couch, listening.

Vanessa's voice softened.

"Laura told me that before she died.""

I turned.

"You knew Laura had another daughter?""

Vanessa nodded.

"She asked me to help her.""

"Help her with what?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Finding a safe home for Sophie.""

Eleanor looked stunned.

"That's not what the documents indicate.""

"Because Laura changed her mind!""

Vanessa opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

"She gave me this.""

My heart began racing.

The envelope was old.

The handwriting on the front was unmistakable.

Laura's.

*For Daniel, when the time is right.*

I reached for it.

Vanessa pulled it back.

"There's something you need to understand first.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

She looked toward Sophie.

"Laura didn't want Michael raising that child.""

Michael stood abruptly.

"That's enough!""

Vanessa ignored him.

"She wanted Daniel to know Sophie was his responsibility.""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Vanessa's eyes moved between us.

"Laura told me that Michael wasn't Sophie's biological father.""

I looked at Michael.

He went completely still.

Vanessa continued.

"She told me she had been with someone else before your marriage. Someone she had never told you about.""

I felt the room tilt.

"Who?""

Vanessa looked directly at me.

"She said the father was a man named Andrew.""

I stared at her.

"Andrew who?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know. She never told me his last name.""

Eleanor reached for the envelope.

"Let me see that.""

Vanessa handed it over reluctantly.

Eleanor examined the seal.

Then she carefully opened it.

Inside was a single handwritten page.

She began reading silently.

Her expression changed with every line.

Finally, she looked up.

"Daniel, I think Laura may have left us the answer.""

She handed me the letter.

My hands trembled as I unfolded it.

Daniel,

There is something I never found the courage to tell you.

I made a mistake before we were married. I was frightened, confused, and ashamed. I convinced myself that keeping the truth from you was the kindest thing I could do.

But secrets have a way of hurting the people we love.

I continued reading.

Sophie's biological father is not Michael.

I looked at my brother.

His face was ashen.

The next sentence made my heart stop.

The man who fathered Sophie is someone you know.

Below it was a name.

A name I hadn't heard in years.

A name belonging to the man who had disappeared from our family after Laura's funeral.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

*Andrew Carter.*

My father.

I slowly raised my eyes.

Michael was crying.

Vanessa looked as though she might collapse.

And suddenly, the betrayal became bigger than anything I had imagined.

Because Laura hadn't been hiding another affair.

She had been hiding a family secret that reached back an entire generation.

I looked at Eleanor.

"Where is my father now?""

She closed the folder.

"That's the problem, Daniel.""

"What problem?""

She hesitated.

"Your father died six months ago.""

I felt my stomach drop.

Then Eleanor placed one final document in front of me.

It was a copy of his will.

And the first page contained a clause that made everything Laura had written suddenly make sense.

My father had left his entire estate to Sophie.

May you like

But there was one condition.

*Daniel Carter must never be told the truth about her birth unless he discovers it himself.*
