Chapter 13: The Father Who Came Back From the Dead
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
My father stood at the back of the chapel, holding a black cane in one hand and a handgun in the other.
His hair had turned completely white.
His face was thinner.
But his eyes were exactly the same.
Cold. Calculating. Unforgiving.
“Hello, Michael.””
I stared at him.
“You're dead.””
He gave a faint smile.
“Apparently, that was the most convenient arrangement.””
Denise began sobbing.
“Please, Charles. Don't do this.””
My father glanced at her.
“You've done enough damage already.””
Andrew stepped aside.
“Grandfather.””
Charles Hayes looked at him.
“You've caused quite a disturbance.””
Andrew laughed bitterly.
“You stole my childhood.””
“I gave you a life.””
“You gave me a false name, a false family, and a false history!””
My father raised his gun slightly.
“And yet here you are, alive and well. Perhaps you should be grateful.””
I moved between him and Denise.
“Put the gun down.””
Charles looked at me.
“You always were emotional, Michael. That's why I never trusted you with the company.””
I felt something inside me snap.
“You faked your death. You let me bury my brother. You watched me grieve for twenty-five years.””
“Richard's death was necessary.””
I stared at him.
“Necessary?””
“Your brother had become a liability.””
Andrew stepped forward.
“You killed him?””
My father didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at me.
“Richard was weak. He couldn't keep his promises. He became obsessed with Evelyn, Camille, and those children. He threatened to expose everything.””
I swallowed.
“So you murdered him.””
Charles shrugged.
“He died because he couldn't understand that some sacrifices are necessary to protect a family.””
Jordan suddenly moved beside me.
“You keep saying family like you own us.””
My father looked at him.
“Jordan. My favorite grandson.””
Jordan laughed.
“You don't even know who your grandchildren are.””
Charles's expression hardened.
“I know exactly who everyone is.””
He pointed at Jordan.
“Richard's biological son.””
Then at Aaliyah.
“Michael's daughter.””
Then Samuel.
“Richard's son with Evelyn.””
Finally, he looked at Andrew.
“And Camille's second child. The one I should never have allowed to survive.””
Andrew's face changed.
“You wanted me dead?””
“I wanted you controlled.””
“You sent me away!””
“I gave you a chance.””
Andrew stepped toward him.
“You gave me to strangers.””
Charles raised the gun.
“Don't come closer.””
I moved forward.
“Enough. Whatever happened thirty years ago ends tonight.””
My father laughed.
“You still don't understand, Michael. It never ends. The family business, the inheritance, the children. Everything depends on what happens next.””
He pulled a folded document from his jacket.
“The original will.””
I stared at it.
“Give it to me.””
“Not yet.””
He unfolded the paper.
“Your grandfather—my father—left the company to the first surviving male descendant. That was supposed to be Richard's son.””
He looked at Jordan.
“But Richard's son was never supposed to be Michael's heir.””
Jordan shook his head.
“I don't want your company.””
Charles ignored him.
“Then there's the matter of the thirty-two million dollars. The trust belongs to the children, but only if all four acknowledge their identities.””
Aaliyah stepped forward.
“We already know who we are.””
“No,” Charles said.
“You know what you've been told.””
He turned toward Andrew.
“Tell them.””
Andrew looked at him.
“Tell them what?””
“That Camille wasn't your mother.””
The chapel went silent.
I felt my stomach drop.
“What?””
Charles smiled.
“Camille gave birth to Jordan. Andrew was born to another woman.””
Andrew shook his head.
“That's another lie.””
My father held up a document.
“Your mother was never Camille.””
Andrew looked at the paper.
Then at me.
“Who was she?””
Charles answered calmly.
“Denise.””
Denise screamed.
“No!””
I turned toward my wife.
She was crying so hard she could barely speak.
My father continued.
“Andrew was born after Denise had an affair with Richard. Camille agreed to raise him as her own because she wanted to protect Michael from the scandal.””
I stared at Denise.
“Is that true?””
She shook her head.
“No. Charles, please!””
My father stepped closer.
“Tell him.””
Denise finally lifted her face.
“Andrew was my baby.””
Andrew staggered backward.
“What?””
“I was twenty-one. Richard was the father. Your grandfather arranged everything. He told me that if anyone discovered the affair, my life would be destroyed.””
Andrew looked at her.
“You knew I was alive?””
Denise nodded through her tears.
“I knew.””
“Did you ever look for me?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After you were sent away.””
Andrew laughed, but the sound was broken.
“You knew where I was. You knew who raised me. You knew my birthday.
You had my photograph. And you never came?””
Denise reached toward him.
“I was afraid.””
Andrew stepped away.
“Everyone was afraid. Nobody was afraid enough to tell the truth.””
I looked at my father.
“So Jordan is Richard's son. Andrew is Richard's son. And both were hidden because of you.””
Charles nodded.
“Exactly.””
“And Denise?””
“She agreed to everything.””
Denise shook her head.
“I was forced.””
My father smiled.
“Were you forced to sign the adoption papers? Were you forced to accept the money? Were you forced to tell Michael that Jordan was his biological son?””
Denise lowered her head.
I felt the weight of twenty-seven years pressing against my chest.
My wife had lied.
My father had lied.
My brother had lied.
And every lie had been built on another person's suffering.
Aaliyah stepped forward.
“You forgot one person.””
Charles looked at her.
“Who?””
“My mother.””
His expression changed.
“Evelyn was weak.””
Aaliyah's voice rose.
“My mother raised me alone. She worked two jobs. She never had enough money, but she made sure I never felt unwanted. She spent thirty years looking for answers while you sat here pretending to be a respectable family.””
Charles's eyes narrowed.
“You have no idea what you're talking about.””
“I know she died without knowing what happened to her children.””
For the first time, my father looked uncomfortable.
Aaliyah continued.
“You stole her babies. You stole her choices. And you made her believe she had failed.””
Charles raised his gun.
“Enough!””
Jordan stepped in front of Aaliyah.
“Don't point that at her.””
My father looked at him.
“You're my grandson. Don't make me do something regrettable.””
Jordan's voice was steady.
“You've already done enough.””
Then Andrew moved.
He lunged toward the gun.
A shot exploded through the chapel.
The sound shattered the silence.
Denise screamed.
I felt something strike my shoulder.
My body hit the floor.
The gun skidded across the wooden boards.
Jordan tackled Charles.
Andrew grabbed the weapon.
Samuel rushed toward Denise.
Aaliyah dropped beside me.
“Michael! Stay with me!””
I looked down.
Blood was spreading across my shirt.
But I could still move.
“I'm all right,” I whispered.
Aaliyah shook her head.
“No, you're not.””
Across the chapel, Charles was struggling beneath Jordan.
He suddenly stopped fighting.
Then he began laughing.
“You fools.””
Jordan tightened his grip.
“What?””
Charles looked toward the rear door.
“You think this ends with me?””
Aaliyah turned.
A second man entered the chapel.
He was holding a briefcase.
And when he stepped into the light, I recognized him.
Richard.
My brother.
The man I'd buried twenty-five years earlier.
He looked directly at me.
“Hello, Michael.””
May you like
Then he smiled.
“I'm afraid you have one more family secret to hear.””
