Chapter 2: The Secret Buried for Thirty Years

“Everyone sit down,” I said.

Nobody moved.

Denise stood beside the sofa, twisting her wedding ring around her finger.

Jordan was still staring at her.

“Mom, answer Dad's question.””

“Jordan, this isn't something you need to hear.””

“I'm twenty-six years old. You don't get to decide that.””

Aaliyah reached for his hand.

“Maybe I should leave.””

“No,” I said immediately.

“You deserve answers as much as anyone here.””

Denise looked at me.

“Michael, I need to speak with you privately.””

I almost laughed.

“Privately? After you announced to our son's girlfriend that she couldn't date him, after you recognized her mother's name, and after you told us my first wife had a child?””

“Please.””

“Twenty-seven years, Denise. Twenty-seven years I've trusted you. Don't ask me for privacy now.””

She lowered her head.

I placed the locket carefully on the coffee table.

“Start with Evelyn.””

Denise sat down.

For a moment, she looked much older than fifty-two.

“Evelyn and I met in high school,” she began.

“She was the kindest person I knew. She was the one who helped me when my father died. We were inseparable.””

“What happened to her?”” Aaliyah asked.

Denise looked at her.

“She fell in love with a man who wasn't available.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Denise's eyes moved toward me.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Camille was pregnant, too. She knew Evelyn was in love with you, Michael. But she never knew how serious it was.””

I stared at her.

“Camille and I were married.””

“I know.””

“Evelyn was in love with me?””

Denise nodded again.

Jordan rubbed his forehead.

“This is insane.””

“Your father and Camille were having problems,” Denise continued.

“They separated for a while. During that time, Michael spent a lot of time with Evelyn. She helped him through everything.””

“I don't remember that,” I said.

“You were grieving your marriage. You probably don't remember how close you all were.””

I remembered.

Not Evelyn specifically.

But I remembered a young woman who occasionally brought food to my apartment, who listened while I complained about Camille, and who always seemed to know when I was having a bad day.

I had never questioned her kindness.

“Are you saying Evelyn was pregnant with my child?”” I asked.

Denise didn't answer immediately.

Aaliyah leaned forward.

“Is that what my mother told you?””

Denise nodded.

“She told me she was pregnant shortly after Camille discovered she was expecting.””

I stood up.

“Then why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Because Camille came back.””

I turned around.

“What?””

“Camille found out about Evelyn's pregnancy. She confronted her. There was a terrible argument.””

“Why?””

Denise pressed her hands together.

“Camille believed Evelyn had deliberately gotten pregnant to keep you.””

“That doesn't sound like Camille.””

“You didn't know everything about her.””

I stared at my wife.

The woman in the photograph on my desk had always represented a beautiful but painful chapter of my life. Camille had been independent, stubborn, and sometimes difficult, but I had never imagined her capable of hurting another woman.

Denise continued.

“Camille asked Evelyn to disappear. She said you were trying to rebuild your marriage, and the baby would destroy everything.””

“And Evelyn agreed?””

“No.””

Aaliyah's eyes widened.

“What happened?””

“Evelyn went to the hospital alone. She had complications. The baby was born early.””

Denise's voice cracked.

“I visited her that night.””

“Why?””

“Because she called me.””

Aaliyah leaned closer.

“What did she say?””

Denise looked down.

“She said she was scared. She didn't have a place to live. She didn't have money. And Camille had threatened to make sure she never saw you again.””

I felt anger rising in my chest.

“Why didn't you call me?””

“Because I thought I was protecting everyone.””

“Everyone except the baby.””

Denise began crying harder.

“I know.””

Jordan moved away from her.

“Mom, what happened to the baby?””

Denise looked at Aaliyah.

“Evelyn told me she wanted you to have a better life. She said she couldn't raise you while fighting with Camille and trying to prove who your father was.””

Aaliyah shook her head.

“My mother never said she gave me away willingly.””

“She didn't.””

Denise's answer was barely audible.

“She asked me to take you somewhere safe until she could get her life together.””

“And you left me at the hospital?””

Denise nodded.

“I left you in the maternity ward. I thought someone would help you. I thought the hospital would find a family.””

Aaliyah stood up.

“You left a newborn baby alone?””

“I was nineteen!””

“So was my mother!””

Denise covered her face.

The room went silent.

I looked at the woman I'd married.

“Did you ever go back?””

Denise shook her head.

“Why not?””

“Because Camille found out.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Denise stood abruptly.

“She told me if I ever came near Evelyn or that baby again, she'd tell everyone what I had done.””

“What had you done?””

Denise's lips trembled.

Before she could answer, Aaliyah reached into her purse and pulled out a small envelope.

“My mother gave me this before she died.””

She placed it beside the locket.

“It was sealed. She told me not to open it until I found Denise Carter.””

Denise looked at the envelope.

Her expression changed immediately.

“No.””

Aaliyah frowned.

“What?””

“Where did you get that?””

“From my mother's belongings.””

“Give it to me.””

Aaliyah pulled it back.

“No. It's addressed to me.””

I picked it up.

The handwriting was faded, but the name on the front was unmistakable.

To Aaliyah. When you finally find Denise.

“Did you know about this letter?”” I asked.

Denise shook her head.

“Evelyn must have written it after we stopped speaking.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single sheet of paper and a small photograph.

The photograph showed a hospital room.

A young woman lay in a bed, holding a newborn baby.

Beside her stood a man.

I recognized him immediately.

It was me.

But the photograph was dated thirty years earlier, almost a year before Camille's supposed accident.

My hands began shaking.

“Where did this come from?”” I whispered.

Aaliyah looked at me.

“My mother said she kept it because it was the only photograph she had of her biological father.””

I looked at the baby.

Then at the man holding her.

It was my face.

My shirt.

My watch.

And on the back, in Evelyn's handwriting, were six words.

Michael met his daughter before he knew.

I sat down.

Jordan stared at the photograph.

“Dad?””

I couldn't speak.

Aaliyah's voice was soft.

“Does that mean you're my father?””

I looked at Denise.

She didn't deny it.

Instead, she whispered, “There's something else you need to know.””

I turned toward her.

“What now?””

Denise swallowed.

“Camille didn't leave you because your marriage failed.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“She discovered the baby wasn't the only secret.””

My skin went cold.

“What secret?””

Denise looked directly at me.

“Camille knew Evelyn was pregnant. But she also knew something about the hospital records.””

Aaliyah opened the letter with trembling fingers.

There was another paragraph beneath the photograph.

She read it aloud.

“Dear Aaliyah, if you have found Denise, you need to know that she was not the only person who knew about your birth. Someone else signed the hospital papers. Someone who had every reason to make sure your father never found you.””

She stopped.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at Denise.

She was staring at the photograph.

Then she whispered a name.

“Richard.””

My older brother.

The man who had stood beside me at Camille's funeral.

The man who had helped me through the worst years of my life.

The man who had recently asked Jordan to join his company.

I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.

“Richard knew?””

May you like

Denise nodded.

“And he made sure nobody told you.””
