Chapter 8: The Fourth Baby

Samuel's words hung in the room.

Four babies.

I looked at the photograph in his hand.

Three newborns lay in a hospital nursery.

But behind them, partially visible in another bassinet, was a fourth child.

I leaned closer.

“Who is that?””

Samuel placed the photograph on the table.

“That's the baby nobody ever talked about.””

Aaliyah stared at the picture.

“Are you saying there were quadruplets?””

Samuel nodded.

“Evelyn gave birth to four children.””

Denise began shaking her head.

“No. That's not possible.””

Samuel looked at her.

“You were there, weren't you?””

Denise lowered her eyes.

I turned toward my wife.

“Did you know?””

She whispered, “I only saw three.””

Samuel laughed bitterly.

“That's what they told you.””

He opened the folder and removed another document.

It was a birth register.

Four names had been entered.

Baby Boy A.

Baby Boy B.

Baby Girl A.

Baby Girl B.

The fourth entry had been crossed out.

I looked at Samuel.

“Who was the fourth child?””

“His name was Daniel.””

Jordan stared.

“Where is he?””

Samuel shrugged.

“That's what I've spent thirty years trying to find out.””

Aaliyah picked up the paper.

“Why would our grandfather take four children?””

Samuel looked at her.

“Because he believed one of them wasn't his.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Samuel pointed to the fourth entry.

“Evelyn had been seeing two men around the time she became pregnant. Your grandfather believed one of the babies belonged to someone outside the family.””

I stared at the document.

“Who?””

Samuel looked at Richard.

“My father.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Don't.””

Samuel ignored him.

“Richard was involved with Evelyn before Camille. And your father suspected that one of the babies was his.””

I looked at my brother.

“Which one?””

Samuel removed a DNA report.

“Jordan.””

Jordan went pale.

“That's impossible. You said Richard was my father.””

“He is.””

Samuel pointed to the report.

“But your grandfather believed Jordan might not be his biological child. He thought the fourth baby was Richard's and that Jordan belonged to Michael.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because the records were changed.””

I looked at Denise.

She was crying silently.

Samuel continued.

“Your father wanted to know which child belonged to which man. He arranged private tests. But the results disappeared.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Those tests were inconclusive.””

Samuel turned toward him.

“You've seen them?””

Richard said nothing.

I looked at my brother.

“You knew?””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“I knew there were questions.””

“Questions? You let me believe Jordan was my son for twenty-six years.””

“You loved him. That's what mattered.””

I felt anger rising.

“You keep using love to justify what you did.””

Samuel closed the folder.

“There's another reason I came here.””

He removed a small photograph.

It showed a young woman standing outside a school.

She looked to be in her early thirties.

Her hair was dark.

Her eyes were unmistakably familiar.

Aaliyah stared.

“Who is she?””

Samuel looked at her.

“Daniel's daughter.””

I blinked.

“You found Daniel?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know?””

Samuel pointed to the back of the photograph.

A name had been written there.

*Victoria Hayes.*

My surname.

I stared at it.

“Hayes?””

Samuel nodded.

“Your father raised Daniel under another name. He gave him to a family friend who moved out of state. That family eventually had a daughter.””

Jordan stepped closer.

“Then Victoria is our cousin?””

“Maybe.””

Samuel hesitated.

“Or she might be your sister.””

The room fell silent.

I looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

Samuel opened the folder again.

“Daniel's daughter was born before her parents married. Her birth certificate lists her mother as unknown.””

Aaliyah looked at the photograph.

“Why would that matter?””

“Because her mother might have been Evelyn.””

I stared at him.

“You're saying Evelyn gave birth to a daughter who was raised as Daniel's child?””

Samuel nodded.

“That's what I believe.””

Richard shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.””

Samuel turned toward him.

“You're the one who told me Daniel died.””

Richard's face went white.

“What?””

Samuel's voice grew louder.

“You told me the fourth baby died in the hospital.””

Richard didn't answer.

“But I found a photograph of him at age five. He was alive. He was living with a family in Ohio.””

I stepped forward.

“Where is he now?””

Samuel pulled out a final document.

“That's the problem.””

He placed it on the table.

It was a death certificate.

The name was Daniel Carter.

The date of death was two years earlier.

I looked at Richard.

“You knew?””

He slowly nodded.

“Daniel died.””

“How?””

Richard's face remained expressionless.

“An accident.””

“Where?””

“Outside Cleveland.””

Samuel laughed bitterly.

“That's what they told us.””

Aaliyah looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Samuel took a deep breath.

“Daniel was found dead in his apartment. No police investigation. No autopsy. The family accepted the death certificate and buried an empty coffin.””

I felt a chill.

“An empty coffin?””

Samuel nodded.

“Because there was no body.””

Jordan stepped closer.

“Then Daniel might still be alive?””

Samuel looked at him.

“That's what I believe.””

Richard suddenly grabbed the folder.

“Enough!””

Samuel pulled it away.

“You don't get to decide when this conversation ends.””

Richard's voice dropped.

“You have no idea what you're dealing with.””

Samuel looked directly at him.

“I know exactly what I'm dealing with. I've spent my entire life paying for your mistakes.””

He turned toward me.

“Michael, I need you to look at something.””

He removed a photocopy of a bank transfer.

The recipient was a private investigator.

The payment date was two weeks before Daniel's supposed death.

The authorization signature belonged to Richard.

I looked at my brother.

“Why were you paying someone to investigate Daniel?””

Richard didn't respond.

Samuel leaned toward me.

“Because Daniel contacted him.””

“Who?””

“Your brother.””

Richard's face tightened.

Samuel continued.

“Daniel discovered he had been adopted. He found out about the triplets. He wanted to meet his biological family.””

I stared at the bank transfer.

“What happened?””

Samuel's eyes filled with anger.

“Three days after he contacted Richard, he disappeared.””

Aaliyah covered her mouth.

Jordan stepped away from the table.

Then Samuel said the words that changed everything.

“Daniel didn't die in Cleveland.””

He looked at Richard.

“He was murdered.””

Denise screamed.

Richard lunged toward Samuel.

Jordan caught his arm.

“Don't touch him!””

The two men struggled for a moment before Jordan pushed Richard backward.

I stepped between them.

“Richard, is it true?””

My brother straightened his jacket.

“You have no proof.””

Samuel reached into his coat.

“I have something better.””

He placed a small digital recorder on the table.

“I recorded the private investigator before he disappeared.””

He pressed play.

A man's nervous voice filled the room.

Richard Hayes paid me to locate Daniel Carter. He told me the boy was dangerous. He said Daniel had discovered something about the original hospital records.

A pause.

Then another voice.

Richard's.

Make sure he never comes back.

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my brother.

“You wanted your own son dead?””

Richard stared at the recorder.

Then he looked at me.

And instead of denying it, he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Michael, if Daniel is still alive, he's not the only person in danger.””

May you like

He pointed toward Jordan.

“Your son is next.””
