Chapter 3: The Man Who Signed the Birth Certificate
Richard had always been the person I called when life became unbearable.
When my father died, he handled the funeral.
When Camille and I separated, he let me stay at his house.
When Camille died, he sat beside me for three nights and reminded me that life had to continue.
He had been my brother, my business partner, and my closest friend.
And now I was learning that he might have known I had a daughter for thirty years.
I reached for my phone.
Jordan caught my wrist.
“Dad, don't call him yet.””
“Why?””
“Because we don't know what happened.””
I looked at the photograph.
“I know what happened. Someone kept my daughter from me.””
Aaliyah sat quietly on the sofa, clutching her mother's letter.
She looked overwhelmed.
“I'm sorry,” she whispered.
“I didn't come here to cause problems.””
I turned toward her.
“You didn't cause anything.””
“But your family—”
“You are not responsible for what the adults in this room did thirty years ago.””
She nodded, but tears rolled down her cheeks.
Jordan put an arm around her.
“I'm staying with you,” he said.
Denise suddenly stood.
“Jordan, don't make this worse.””
He looked at her.
“Worse? Mom, you just found out that my girlfriend might be my half-sister, and you're worried about making things worse?””
Denise recoiled.
I hadn't considered that possibility.
Neither had Jordan.
Aaliyah looked at him, confused.
“What do you mean?””
Jordan stepped away from her.
“Dad, we need a DNA test.””
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Aaliyah wiped her cheeks.
“I'll do whatever is necessary.””
Denise shook her head.
“No. You don't understand. There are things about Richard that could hurt all of us.””
I turned toward her.
“Then tell us.””
She looked toward the front window.
“I can't.””
I took my phone from my pocket.
“Then I'll ask him myself.””
I called Richard.
He answered on the third ring.
“Michael! I was just thinking about you. Everything all right?””
His cheerful voice made my stomach turn.
“I need you to come over.””
“Now?””
“Yes.””
“What's happened?””
I looked at Aaliyah.
“It's about Evelyn Brooks.””
There was a pause.
A long one.
Then Richard said, “Michael, I don't think that's a conversation we should have over the phone.””
My fingers tightened around the device.
“Why?””
“Because some things are better left alone.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“Come over, Richard.””
He sighed.
“All right. Give me twenty minutes.””
When I ended the call, nobody spoke.
Aaliyah placed her mother's letter back inside the envelope.
“Did my mother know him?””
“I don't know,” I said.
Denise answered for me.
“She knew him very well.””
Aaliyah looked up.
“How?””
Denise hesitated.
Then she said, “Richard was the one who arranged the hospital paperwork.””
I stared at her.
“You told me you left the baby there.””
“I did.””
“Then how was Richard involved?””
Denise sat down again.
“Because I called him afterward. I was terrified. I was nineteen, Michael. I had left a baby at a hospital, and I thought I'd ruined my life.””
“And he helped you?””
“He told me he would take care of it.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did he do?””
“I don't know everything. He said he had connections at the hospital. He promised the baby would be placed with a good family.””
Aaliyah's voice trembled.
“My mother adopted me.””
Denise nodded.
“Yes. Evelyn came back for you.””
I turned toward her.
“You said she had asked you to leave the baby temporarily.””
“She did.””
“Then how did she get her back?””
Denise looked away.
“Richard helped arrange it.””
I shook my head.
“This makes no sense. Why would he do that if he wanted the child hidden?””
“Because he didn't want the baby to disappear completely.””
Aaliyah frowned.
“Why?””
Denise looked at her.
“Because Evelyn knew something about him.””
Before I could ask another question, the doorbell rang.
Richard had arrived.
I opened the door.
My brother stood there wearing his usual navy blazer and a confident smile.
“Michael. You look terrible.””
He stepped inside, then noticed the people gathered in the living room.
His eyes landed on Aaliyah.
For the first time I could remember, Richard looked genuinely frightened.
He stopped walking.
“Who is she?””
Aaliyah stood.
“I'm Aaliyah Brooks.””
Richard stared at her necklace.
Then at the photograph on the table.
His face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“My mother gave it to me.””
Richard slowly turned toward Denise.
“You told her?””
Denise shook her head.
“She found me.””
Richard closed the front door.
Then he looked at me.
“Michael, we need to talk.””
“We are talking.””
“Alone.””
“No.””
His jaw tightened.
“Michael, listen to me. This is complicated.””
“Did you know Camille was pregnant?””
Richard didn't answer.
“Did you know Evelyn had a baby?””
He looked down.
“Did you sign hospital papers?””
Richard finally raised his eyes.
“Yes.””
The single word hit harder than a slap.
Jordan stood up.
“You knew?””
Richard looked at him.
“Jordan, sit down.””
“Don't tell me what to do.””
Richard removed his blazer and draped it over a chair.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
“From what?”” I demanded.
He looked at Aaliyah.
“From a scandal that could have destroyed your father's life.””
Aaliyah stepped forward.
“My mother wasn't a scandal.””
“I didn't say she was.””
“You treated her like one.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“Your mother made some very poor decisions.””
I moved between them.
“Don't speak about Evelyn like that.””
Richard sighed.
“Michael, you don't understand what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
He stared at me for several seconds.
Finally, he said, “Camille was never pregnant with your child.””
The room went silent.
I felt the words settle slowly.
“What?””
“Camille was pregnant, yes. But the child wasn't yours.””
Denise began shaking her head.
“Richard, stop.””
He ignored her.
“Camille had been seeing someone else. When she discovered she was pregnant, she panicked. She knew your marriage was already falling apart, and she didn't want the truth coming out.””
I looked at the photograph.
“Then whose child was it?””
Richard's eyes moved toward the hallway.
“Mine.””
For a moment, the world seemed to stop.
Jordan stared at his uncle.
Aaliyah covered her mouth.
Denise whispered, “You promised you would never tell him.””
I couldn't even feel my hands.
“My brother?””
Richard nodded.
“Camille and I made a mistake. It happened before you and she separated.””
I stumbled backward.
“You let me bury her believing she had died as my wife.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You let me grieve a marriage built on a lie!””
Richard raised his voice.
“You were my brother! I wasn't going to let you destroy yourself over something that happened before you separated.””
“And Evelyn?””
He looked away.
“Evelyn knew about Camille and me. She was going to tell you everything.””
Aaliyah's face went pale.
“So you kept me from my father?””
Richard's expression changed.
“I never said that.””
“Then why did my mother spend thirty years without knowing who my father was?””
Richard looked at the letter.
“Because she didn't tell you the whole truth either.””
I stepped forward.
“What truth?””
He reached inside his briefcase and removed a folded document.
“I kept this because I knew one day someone would come looking.””
He placed it on the coffee table.
It was a copy of an original hospital record.
There were three names on it.
Evelyn Brooks.
Denise Carter.
And Michael Hayes.
But beneath my name was a handwritten note.
Biological father confirmed. Child transferred to private guardianship under authorization of Richard Hayes.
My stomach dropped.
“Private guardianship?””
Richard nodded.
“Evelyn wanted you to raise the baby.””
Aaliyah stared at him.
“Then why didn't he?””
Richard looked directly at me.
“Because you weren't the only man who had a claim to that child.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Richard took another document from his briefcase.
This one had a date, a signature, and a name I had never expected to see.
Aaliyah leaned closer.
Then she began to cry.
“That's impossible.””
I looked at the signature.
It belonged to my father.
The man who had been dead for twenty-five years.
And beneath his signature were the words:
I accept full responsibility for the child.
I looked at Richard.
“What did my father do?””
Richard closed his briefcase.
“Your father didn't just know about Aaliyah.””
He paused.
“He was the one who ordered me to make sure you never found out she existed.””
May you like
And then he added something that made Denise collapse into the sofa.
“Because he knew Aaliyah wasn't the first baby Evelyn had given birth to.””
