Chapter 13: The Child My Father Had Hidden in Plain Sight
“Ethan?””
I repeated my son's name.
Nia was crying on the other end of the phone.
“Marcus, please let me explain.””
I looked at Laura.
She was standing beside the coffee table, holding the original hospital bracelet.
“What do you mean my father gave Ethan away?””
Nia took a shaky breath.
“Your father arranged for Ethan to remain with us.””
“That isn't what you just said.””
“He didn't tell me everything. He only said Ethan needed to be protected.””
I closed my eyes.
“From whom?””
“From Daniel.””
I looked at Laura.
She slowly shook her head.
Something wasn't right.
Daniel had claimed that Ethan was biologically his son. But now Nia was saying my father had hidden him from Daniel.
I walked toward the window.
“Why would Daniel want to take Ethan?””
“Because Ethan was originally registered as his child.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Then why did Daniel let us raise him?””
“He didn't know where the child had gone.””
I stared at the street.
“That's impossible. He knew about the hospital investigation six years ago.””
“He knew about Maya. He didn't know about Ethan.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“Where are you right now?””
“At home.””
“Don't move. I'm coming back.””
I ended the call.
Laura stepped closer.
“Marcus, I think you need to see something.””
She picked up the envelope my father had left.
There was another page tucked beneath the letter.
It was a photocopy of an official hospital transfer record.
I studied it.
The document showed four babies.
Not three.
Four.
Baby A: Nia and Marcus Carter.
Baby B: Claire and Daniel Reed.
Baby C: Rebecca Carter.
Baby D: Laura Bennett.
Beside Baby D was a handwritten note.
*Biological father: Daniel Reed.*
I looked at Laura.
“Did you know?””
She nodded.
“Your father told me that Daniel was the biological father of the baby I was supposed to raise.””
I stared at the document.
“But you raised Oliver.””
“Yes.””
“Then who was Baby D?””
Laura looked toward the staircase.
“I think that's what your father was trying to explain.””
I turned the page.
The baby's temporary name had been crossed out.
Underneath, someone had written:
*Ethan.*
My hands went cold.
I looked at Laura.
“Are you telling me Ethan was originally Daniel's baby?””
She nodded.
“But the records don't make sense. If Daniel was his father, why was Ethan released to your family?””
Laura looked down.
“Because your father intervened.””
I read the transfer date.
It was the same date as my father's signature on the agreement.
But the destination was not the Carter family home.
It was Laura's address.
I felt my chest tighten.
“Did you ever meet Ethan?””
Laura shook her head.
“No. I was told the placement had been canceled.””
“Who told you?””
“Your father.””
I stared at her.
“Then how did Ethan end up with us?””
She reached into the box and removed another letter.
“Your father explained it in this.””
I opened the envelope.
The first transfer was stopped after I discovered that the hospital had confused two identification records. I believed I had corrected the problem. But I was wrong.
I read the next paragraph.
Daniel's biological son was never meant to leave the hospital. Someone changed the paperwork again. By the time I discovered the truth, the child had already been placed with Marcus and Nia.
I lowered the letter.
My father had known.
He had known that Ethan wasn't biologically mine.
But there was another sentence.
I allowed Marcus to raise Ethan because I believed he deserved a father who would love him without conditions. I did not tell him because I feared Daniel would use the truth to take the boy away.
I felt sick.
I looked at Laura.
“Did my father ever tell you who changed the records?””
She shook her head.
Then she pointed to the bottom of the letter.
A name appeared beneath the final paragraph.
*Patricia Wells.*
The maternity department supervisor.
The same woman who had contacted me at the hospital.
I immediately called her.
She answered after several rings.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Why is your name on my father's document?””
There was silence.
Then she sighed.
“Where did you get that?””
“Answer the question.””
“I was a junior records officer ten years ago.””
“Did you change the newborn records?””
“No.””
“Did you help Dr. Morris?””
Another pause.
“Mr. Carter, I think we should meet.””
“Not until you tell me whether my son was deliberately given to the wrong family.””
She lowered her voice.
“Your father asked me to protect him.””
“Which son?””
“Ethan.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
“Because Dr. Morris had been instructed to release the baby to another family. Your father believed the placement was illegal.””
“Who instructed her?””
Patricia didn't answer.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Your mother.””
I felt the phone slip slightly in my hand.
“My mother?””
“Evelyn Carter signed the original authorization.””
I looked at Laura.
She had heard the answer.
Her face was white.
“Why would my mother arrange to move Daniel's baby?””
Patricia sighed.
“Because she believed the child was her grandson.””
I couldn't speak.
Then Patricia added:
“Mr. Carter, there's something else. Your father didn't just hide Ethan. He changed the records to protect another child.””
“Who?””
She whispered:
“Maya.””
I felt the room spin.
“What about Maya?””
“Your mother knew Maya was biologically Daniel's daughter. But the hospital records also showed that the child originally delivered to Nia wasn't the girl who went home with you.””
I stared at the wall.
“Then who was?””
Patricia took a breath.
“Your biological daughter.””
I froze.
I thought of the original photograph.
The newborn bracelet.
The corrected birth records.
The baby my father had written about.
“Where is she?””
Patricia's voice broke.
“Mr. Carter, she's been living under another name for ten years.””
I gripped the phone.
“Tell me where.””
“Her name is Lily Bennett.””
I looked at Laura.
She slowly sat down.
Then she whispered:
“That's impossible.””
I turned toward her.
“Why?””
Laura covered her mouth.
“Because Lily is my daughter.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“Your daughter?””
Laura nodded, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“She was born three days before Oliver.””
I felt my heartbeat pounding.
“Who is her biological father?””
Laura looked at me.
And before she could answer, Patricia spoke through the phone.
“Marcus, your father believed Lily was the only child who had been placed with the correct family.””
I stared at Laura.
She shook her head.
“No. No, that can't be right.””
Patricia continued.
“Because the child you raised as Maya was never supposed to be in the Carter family at all.””
I slowly lowered the phone.
Ten years.
Four babies.
Three families.
And my father had apparently rearranged all of their lives.
I looked at Laura.
“Where is Lily?””
Laura stood up.
“She should be home from school in twenty minutes.””
I swallowed.
“Then I need to meet her.””
Laura nodded.
But before we could move, she picked up another photograph from the box.
It showed Lily as a newborn.
On the back was a handwritten note.
The daughter Marcus never got to hold.
I looked at the photograph.
Then at Laura.
And finally, I understood why my father had spent his final years trying to uncover the truth.
He hadn't simply been protecting one child.
May you like
He had been trying to bring an entire family back together.
And somewhere in that family was a little girl who had been my biological daughter all along.
