Chapter 5: The Boy Who Wasn't Supposed to Be Mine

I stared at Nia.

“What did you just say?””

She pressed her hands against her face.

“The other baby.””

I shook my head.

“Don't speak in riddles.””

Nia looked toward the stairs.

“Marcus, the little girl who was supposed to be yours…”

She stopped.

I waited.

“She isn't a girl anymore.””

My heart began beating faster.

“Who?””

Nia whispered a name.

“Ethan.””

I felt the room tilt.

Ethan.

My son.

The boy I had brought home from the hospital ten years earlier.

The boy whose first word had been Dad.

The boy who had broken his arm climbing a tree, who hated broccoli, and who still insisted on sleeping with the dinosaur blanket he had owned since he was a toddler.

I stared at Nia.

“Ethan is Daniel's biological child?””

She nodded.

Maya looked up.

“Wait. Ethan is my brother?””

Nia wiped her cheeks.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“But you said he was Dad's son.””

I looked at the clock.

Ethan would be home from his friend's house soon.

My entire family had just been turned upside down, and my ten-year-old daughter was standing in front of me trying to understand why.

I sat beside her.

“Your brother is still your brother.””

She nodded slowly.

Then she asked the question I couldn't answer.

“Does he know?””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

I stood.

“Then why does Daniel know?””

“Because the hospital contacted him.””

“When?””

“Six years ago.””

“And he knew Ethan was living with us?””

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“Did he ever try to take him?””

“No. He said he wanted what was best for both children.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That's convenient.””

Nia stood.

“Marcus, Daniel lost his wife. He didn't want to destroy our family.””

“So he visited Maya secretly?””

“He wanted to know her.””

“And what about Ethan?””

“He never asked to meet him.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

Nia's eyes filled again.

“He said Ethan already had a father.””

I turned away.

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

Because Daniel had apparently decided that Ethan deserved the stability of a family, while Maya deserved a secret relationship with a stranger.

And Nia had agreed.

A car door slammed outside.

Maya looked toward the window.

“That's Ethan.””

I closed my eyes.

There was no time to prepare.

A moment later, the front door opened.

“Mom? Dad?””

Ethan walked into the hallway carrying his backpack and a half-eaten packet of cookies.

He was wearing his favorite basketball jersey, and his hair was still damp from playing outside.

“Why is everyone so quiet?””

Maya ran toward him.

“Ethan!””

He smiled.

“What's up?””

She hugged him tightly.

He laughed.

“Okay, you're crushing me.””

Then he noticed her tears.

His smile disappeared.

“What's wrong?””

Maya looked at me.

I stepped forward.

“Come sit down, buddy.””

Ethan dropped his backpack.

“Am I in trouble?””

“No.””

“Then why does Mom look like she saw a ghost?””

Nia started crying harder.

I pulled a chair out.

“Ethan, there's something important we need to talk about.””

He sat.

I looked at Nia.

She nodded weakly.

I didn't know how to explain ten years of lies to a child.

So I started with the truth.

“Remember when you learned about DNA in school?””

Ethan nodded.

“Yeah. It's the stuff that makes you look like your parents.””

“That's right.””

He looked at me.

“Okay.””

“Sometimes hospitals make mistakes. A long time ago, when you and Maya were born, the hospital made a serious mistake.””

Ethan frowned.

“What kind?””

I placed the birth records on the table.

“You and Maya were accidentally switched with another family.””

He stared at me.

Then at the documents.

Then back at me.

“What does that mean?””

Nia stepped forward.

“It means your biological father is someone named Daniel.””

Ethan blinked.

“Who?””

I answered.

“Daniel Reed.””

He looked at me for a long moment.

“Then who are you?””

My throat tightened.

“I'm your dad.””

“But you just said—”

“I know what I said.””

He pushed his chair backward.

“So I'm not your real son?””

I knelt beside him.

“You are my son.””

“Then why does that paper say someone else's name?””

I had no answer that could make the document disappear.

Ethan stood up.

“Did you know?””

I looked him in the eyes.

“No. I found out today.””

He turned toward Nia.

“Did you know?””

Nia began crying.

“Yes.””

Ethan's face changed.

“How long?””

“Ethan—”

“How long, Mom?””

She lowered her head.

“Six years.””

He stared at her.

Then he picked up the document and read the name again.

“Daniel Reed.””

He walked toward the window.

“Does he have other kids?””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

“Is he married?””

“He was. Your biological mother, Claire, passed away.””

Ethan turned.

“So I'm supposed to go live with him?””

“No!”” Nia said immediately.

“Then why are you telling me?””

I stepped closer.

“Nobody is sending you anywhere.””

He looked at me.

“Promise?””

I placed both hands on his shoulders.

“Promise.””

For the first time, his eyes filled with tears.

“I don't want another dad.””

I pulled him into my arms.

“You don't have to choose another one.””

He held me tightly.

Then Maya joined us.

For a few seconds, the three of us stood together.

Nia remained near the bedroom door.

She looked like she wanted to join us, but she didn't move.

When Ethan finally stepped back, he wiped his face.

“Does this mean Maya has a different dad too?””

I nodded.

“Biologically, yes.””

Ethan looked at his sister.

“That's stupid.””

Maya let out a small laugh through her tears.

“Yeah.””

He hugged her.

“You're still my sister.””

She nodded.

“And you're still my brother.””

I watched them.

Then my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

I opened the message.

*Marcus, I know Nia told you about the hospital mix-up. There's something she hasn't told you about the DNA results. You need to meet me before you make any decisions. — Daniel*

I looked at Nia.

She was watching my phone.

“What did he say?”” she asked.

I showed her.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Don't meet him.””

“Why?””

“Because he's going to manipulate you.””

I stared at her.

“What DNA results?””

She didn't answer.

I picked up my phone.

A second message appeared.

This time, Daniel had attached a photograph.

It showed a laboratory report.

Two names appeared at the top.

*MARCUS CARTER.*

*ETHAN CARTER.*

And beneath them, a result I hadn't expected.

The report stated that I was not Ethan's biological father.

I looked at Nia.

“Why did Daniel send me this?””

She began shaking.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“Because that isn't the only DNA test he has.””
