Chapter 14: The Four Children and the One Truth Nobody Wanted
Laura's front door opened at 3:42 p.m.
A little girl walked inside carrying a purple backpack.
“Mom, I'm home!””
She had long brown hair, bright eyes, and a small gap between her front teeth.
Laura rushed toward her.
“Lily, sweetheart.””
The girl stopped.
“What's wrong?””
Laura knelt and hugged her.
“Nothing. I just missed you.””
Lily looked over her mother's shoulder.
Then she noticed me.
“Who's that?””
Laura stood.
“This is Marcus.””
Lily tilted her head.
“Are you Mom's friend?””
I tried to smile.
“Something like that.””
She placed her backpack on the floor.
“Are you staying for dinner?””
I looked at Laura.
She nodded.
“Maybe.””
Lily disappeared upstairs.
I stood motionless.
I had just met the daughter I hadn't known existed.
She had walked past me like I was any other visitor.
And I couldn't blame her.
I was a stranger.
Laura sat beside me.
“Marcus, I need to tell you something.””
I turned.
“Another secret?””
She shook her head.
“No. Something I should have said years ago.””
She opened the wooden box and removed a small hospital bracelet.
It had been kept in a plastic sleeve.
The printed name read:
*BABY GIRL — BENNETT.*
But beneath the label, someone had written a second name.
*MAYA CARTER.*
I stared at it.
“Why does it say Maya?””
Laura wiped her eyes.
“Because that was the name your father gave her.””
I looked at her.
“Did you know she wasn't your biological daughter?””
Laura nodded.
“Not at first.””
“When did you find out?””
“Six years ago.””
I felt anger rise again.
“Another six-year secret.””
Laura lowered her head.
“I know.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because your father begged me not to.””
I stood.
“Everyone keeps blaming my father. He's dead. He can't defend himself.
But you and Nia are alive. You could have told me.””
Laura didn't argue.
“You're right.””
I looked toward the staircase.
“Does Lily know?””
“No.””
“Does she know anything about the hospital?””
“She knows she was born three days before Oliver. She doesn't know about the other families.””
I sat down again.
“Then what happens now?””
Laura took a breath.
“We need to tell the children carefully. They deserve the truth, but they shouldn't be forced to carry the mistakes of adults.””
For the first time that day, I agreed with someone.
I looked at my phone.
Nia had called seven times.
I finally answered.
“Where are you?””
“At home.””
“I'm bringing someone back.””
“Who?””
“Laura.””
Silence.
Then Nia whispered:
“Did you meet Lily?””
“Yes.””
She began crying.
“Marcus, please don't bring her here.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
“Because Maya isn't ready.””
I looked toward the staircase.
“Neither is Ethan. But that doesn't mean we get to hide everything forever.””
Nia said nothing.
“I'll be home in thirty minutes.””
I ended the call.
When Lily came downstairs, she was holding a drawing.
“Mom, I made this at school.””
Laura smiled.
“That's beautiful, sweetheart.””
Lily showed it to her.
It was a family portrait.
Laura.
Her husband, Thomas.
Lily.
And a small dog.
I looked at the drawing.
“That's a lovely family.””
Lily nodded proudly.
“That's us.””
I felt something tighten in my chest.
She had a family.
She had a life.
I wasn't going to walk into it and demand that she call me Dad.
Instead, I knelt beside her.
“Lily, would you like to come with us to meet some children your age?””
She looked at Laura.
“Who?””
“Some people who might have an important connection to your story.””
Lily frowned.
“Like cousins?””
Laura smiled sadly.
“Something like that.””
Lily considered it.
“Okay.””
We arrived home just after five.
Nia opened the door.
Her face went pale when she saw Laura.
“You brought her here?””
I stepped inside.
“Yes.””
Lily stood beside Laura.
Nia looked at the little girl.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then she whispered:
“Hello, Lily.””
Lily looked at her.
“Do I know you?””
Nia began crying.
“No, sweetheart. But I knew your mother.””
Laura gently placed a hand on Lily's shoulder.
“Let's go inside.””
Maya and Ethan were sitting in the living room.
Ethan stood first.
“Dad!””
He looked at Lily.
“Who's that?””
I took a breath.
“Everyone, please sit down.””
Maya glanced toward Nia.
“Is this another secret?””
I knelt beside her.
“No more secrets.””
I looked at all four children.
“There's something important about the night you were born. The hospital made mistakes. Adults made decisions they shouldn't have made. And those decisions affected all of your lives.””
Ethan folded his arms.
“Are you saying we're not really brothers and sisters?””
I shook my head.
“You're still family. But biologically, some of the connections are different from what we believed.””
Lily looked confused.
“Why am I here?””
Laura sat beside her.
“Because we want you to know something about your birth.””
Nia took a deep breath.
“Maya, Ethan, and Lily were all connected to the same hospital investigation.””
Maya looked at Lily.
“Are we related?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
I glanced at Nia.
She finally spoke.
“Lily is Marcus's biological daughter.””
Maya stared at her.
Then she looked at me.
I nodded.
“But that doesn't change who I love or who I am.””
Maya looked toward Lily.
“Does that mean she's my sister?””
“Yes,” I said.
Lily smiled slightly.
“I've always wanted a sister.””
Maya hesitated.
Then she moved closer.
“I have a brother too.””
Ethan raised his hand.
“I'm the brother.””
For a moment, the room softened.
Then Ethan looked at Nia.
“Mom, why didn't you tell us?””
Nia began crying.
“Because I was afraid.””
Maya shook her head.
“You always say that.””
Nia lowered her eyes.
I placed the original records on the table.
“There's one more thing we need to understand. We still don't know exactly how the four babies were assigned to their families.””
Laura reached into her bag.
“I brought something.””
She removed a small flash drive.
“My husband found this in an old box belonging to your father.””
I stared at it.
“What is it?””
“An audio recording.””
She handed it to me.
I plugged it into my laptop.
A few seconds later, my father's voice filled the room.
“Evelyn, I can't keep doing this.””
My mother answered.
“Then tell Marcus the truth.””
My father's voice sounded exhausted.
“If I tell him, Daniel will take Maya, Nia will lose Lily, and the hospital will destroy the evidence.””
My mother spoke again.
“Then what about Ethan?””
A long silence followed.
Finally, my father said:
“Ethan is the only child we can still protect.””
I looked at Nia.
She had gone completely pale.
The recording continued.
Then my father's voice dropped.
“Because the fourth child isn't the only one whose identity was changed.””
I leaned toward the laptop.
“What do you mean?””
A woman's voice answered.
Not my mother's.
Not Nia's.
Dr. Helen Morris.
“I told you, Robert. The records have already been corrected. Nobody will ever know that one of those children was never supposed to leave the hospital.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel, who had arrived moments earlier and was standing in the doorway, spoke.
“I know what she meant.””
I turned.
“Explain.””
He stepped into the room.
“Because one of the four babies wasn't connected to any of the three families.””
I stared at him.
“Then whose child was it?””
Daniel looked at Nia.
And she whispered:
“Rebecca's.””
Daniel nodded.
“But Rebecca had two children that night.””
The room went silent.
Laura looked horrified.
“That isn't possible.””
Daniel placed a final document on the table.
It was a hospital delivery record.
Two babies.
Same mother.
Same delivery room.
One boy.
One girl.
I looked at the date.
Then at the names.
The boy had been registered as Noah.
The girl had been registered as Lily.
And beneath the records was a note that explained why my father had spent ten years trying to repair what happened.
*One of Rebecca's children was deliberately removed from the official registry.*
I looked toward Nia.
“Where is that child?””
She began sobbing.
Daniel answered.
“We've known her for ten years.””
He turned toward Maya.
May you like
Then he said:
“She's been living in your house.””
