Chapter 6: The Test That Changed Everything
I read the laboratory report three times.
The result was clear.
No biological paternity relationship.
Marcus Carter.
Ethan Carter.
I felt as though someone had reached into my chest and pulled out ten years of memories.
I remembered holding Ethan in the hospital.
I remembered the first night he slept in his crib.
I remembered standing outside his classroom on his first day of school, pretending not to cry.
And now a piece of paper was telling me that none of it had been written into his DNA.
Ethan was upstairs.
Maya was sitting beside him.
They were talking quietly, probably trying to make sense of everything.
I turned toward Nia.
“Where did this report come from?””
She wiped her face.
“Daniel sent it.””
“I can see that. Who ordered the test?””
“I did.””
I stared at her.
“When?””
“Six years ago.””
The room seemed to go silent.
“You had Ethan tested six years ago?””
She nodded.
“Why?””
“Because the hospital contacted me. They said there was a possibility that the babies had been switched. They recommended testing.””
“And you agreed without telling me?””
“I was terrified.””
I put the report on the table.
“So you knew Ethan wasn't biologically mine.””
“Yes.””
“And you kept quiet.””
She looked down.
“I thought we could still be a family.””
I laughed bitterly.
“We were a family. You made the decision that I didn't deserve to know the truth.””
Nia began crying.
“I was afraid you would leave.””
I leaned against the kitchen counter.
“Did you think hiding it would make it disappear?””
She shook her head.
“I didn't know what to do.””
“You could have told me.””
“I wanted to.””
“When?””
She looked at me.
“After your father's funeral.””
I remembered that night.
The unanswered phone call.
The two cups of coffee.
The way she had avoided looking at me.
I felt sick.
“Was that when Daniel came back into your life?””
Nia nodded.
“He contacted me after Claire died.””
“And you started seeing him?””
“No.””
“Don't lie to me.””
“I met him twice.””
“Twice?””
She looked away.
“Three times.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
Another number.
Another correction.
Another piece of the truth dragged out of her one question at a time.
“Did you sleep with him?””
Nia froze.
I looked at her.
“Answer me.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
I watched her carefully.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Daniel say I should ask what happened eleven months ago?””
Nia sat down.
“Because he wanted to make you suspicious.””
“Why?””
“Because he wants Maya.””
I stared at her.
“Explain.””
She took a shaky breath.
“Daniel has been alone since Claire died. He never had another child. When the hospital confirmed the mistake, he wanted to know Maya.””
“And you let him.””
“Yes.””
“Without telling me.””
“Yes.””
“Did you tell him he could be her father?””
Nia nodded.
I turned away.
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Then I heard a small voice behind me.
“Dad?””
Ethan stood at the bottom of the stairs.
His eyes were red.
He was holding his dinosaur blanket.
“Can I ask something?””
I turned immediately.
“Anything.””
He looked at the report on the table.
“Does that mean I have to call Daniel Dad?””
“No.””
“Does he get to decide where I live?””
“No.””
Ethan looked down.
“Would you still love me if I wasn't your real son?””
I walked toward him.
I knelt.
“Ethan, listen carefully. There is no test in the world that can tell me whether you're my son.””
He looked at me.
“You're my boy. I have loved you every day of your life. That doesn't change because someone else shares your DNA.””
His chin trembled.
“Promise?””
I pulled him close.
“On everything I have.””
He buried his face against my shoulder.
Behind him, Maya appeared.
She wrapped her arms around both of us.
“We're still a family,” she whispered.
I held them both.
And for the first time that evening, I understood something.
The hospital had made a mistake ten years ago.
But the real betrayal had happened afterward.
The secret had been protected for six years.
Six birthdays.
Six Christmas mornings.
Six years of watching me raise two children without giving me the truth.
I looked toward Nia.
“Did you tell Daniel he could come here today?””
She nodded.
“Why?””
“Because he wanted to meet the baby.””
I frowned.
“What does the baby have to do with this?””
Nia stared at me.
“He believes the hospital made another mistake.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?””
She reached for the folder.
“Daniel thinks the baby might be his.””
I stared at her.
“That makes no sense. The baby was born to you and me.””
“He wants a test.””
“Why would he think that?””
Nia began shaking.
“Because he says the dates match.””
I looked at the newborn's hospital paperwork again.
The handwritten entry.
Daniel Reed.
The paternity hold.
Suddenly, the pieces began moving into place.
Daniel hadn't simply come to congratulate Nia.
He had come expecting something.
I picked up my phone and called him.
He answered after the second ring.
“Marcus.””
“Why do you think my newborn son is yours?””
There was a pause.
“Because of the timing.””
“What timing?””
“The hospital records.””
I gripped the phone.
“Stop speaking in riddles.””
Daniel sighed.
“Eleven months ago, Nia told me she was pregnant.””
I looked at my wife.
Her face had gone white.
“What?””
“She contacted me after the anniversary of Claire's death. She said she was confused about the past and wanted to talk. A few weeks later, she told me she was expecting.””
I turned toward Nia.
“Is that true?””
She covered her mouth.
Daniel continued.
“She told me the baby might be mine.””
I felt my hands shaking.
“You're telling me my wife said that?””
“Yes.””
“Did you sleep with her?””
Silence.
Then Daniel answered.
“Ask Nia.””
I lowered the phone.
Nia was crying.
“Marcus, I can explain.””
I stepped toward her.
“Did you sleep with Daniel?””
She nodded.
Once.
Then she whispered, “Eleven months ago.””
The room seemed to disappear.
I remembered the night of my father's funeral.
The unanswered call.
The untouched coffee.
The strange silence.
I stared at her.
“You told me you were sick.””
“I was.””
“You told me you were alone.””
“I was confused.””
“You told me you loved me.””
“I do!””
I stepped backward.
“Then why?””
Nia collapsed into the chair.
“I thought I had lost everything. Daniel had just told me he wanted to know Maya. I was angry, frightened, and I made the worst decision of my life.””
I looked at the baby monitor on the counter.
My newborn son was sleeping in the hospital.
And another man believed he might be his father.
I brought the phone back to my ear.
“Daniel, did you take a DNA test?””
“Yes.””
“With the baby?””
“No. Not yet.””
“Then what are you basing this on?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because Nia gave me a copy of the ultrasound dates.””
I turned toward my wife.
She looked down.
Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.
“Marcus, there's one more thing. The baby was conceived during the same week Nia and I were together. But the hospital records show something even more important.””
“What?””
“The baby may not be the only child whose paternity is in question.””
I looked at the two children standing beside me.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“The hospital found a third newborn record from that same night.””
May you like
And before I could ask another question, he added:
“Marcus, I think all three children are connected to the same mistake.””
