Chapter 11: The Room Vanessa Never Entered

We drove back toward the city without stopping.

Daniel contacted his associate and requested an emergency order preserving the original trust records.

I called Patricia.

“Where is Lily?””

“She is with me. We're at my sister's house.””

“Keep her there.””

“What happened?””

“Thomas believes my father hid a financial ledger in the old family house.””

Patricia went silent.

“Marcus, Vanessa still has access to that property.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Then we need to get there before she does.””

The house had been my father's home before it became mine.

It was a large colonial property with white columns, a wide staircase, and a garden Emily had once filled with roses.

After my father died, Emily and I moved in temporarily while we renovated our own place.

Eventually, the house became our home.

Vanessa had insisted on keeping it after we married.

She said it represented stability for Lily.

Now I wondered whether she had wanted something else.

When we arrived, the front gate was open.

A black SUV sat in the driveway.

Richard's car.

I felt my pulse quicken.

“Stay behind me,” Daniel said.

We entered through the side door.

The house was quiet.

But the smell of fresh paint hung in the air.

I looked toward the staircase.

“What has she done?””

Daniel noticed the same thing.

A painting that had hung in the hallway for years was missing.

So was the wooden cabinet beside the dining room.

We walked toward my father's old study.

The door was open.

Inside, drawers had been emptied.

Folders were scattered across the carpet.

Someone had pulled the books from the shelves.

I stepped into the room.

My father's desk was still there.

But the top had been scratched.

A large section of the wall behind it had been exposed.

Daniel looked around.

“Someone has been searching.””

I walked toward the grandfather clock.

It stood near the corner exactly where Thomas had said it would be.

I opened the wooden cabinet beneath the clock face.

Nothing.

Then I noticed a small brass panel near the base.

It was slightly loose.

I knelt and pressed it.

A narrow compartment opened.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

And a key.

The paper contained a message in my father's handwriting.

Marcus, if you've found this, then Richard has already gone too far.

My throat tightened.

I unfolded the rest.

The ledger is not the only evidence. The original recordings are stored separately. Do not trust the copies Richard provides. He knows how to manipulate them.

I looked at Daniel.

“Original recordings?””

He examined the key.

“Perhaps another storage location.””

The note continued.

There is one person who knows where I placed the complete archive. Her name is Margaret Collins.

The same woman Emily had named as the independent trustee.

I immediately called her.

She answered after three rings.

“Marcus?””

“Margaret, I need your help.””

Her voice became serious.

“Has something happened to Lily?””

I looked around the destroyed study.

“Yes.””

“Then it's time.””

“Time for what?””

“To finish what Emily and your father started.””

Before I could ask another question, I heard a noise behind us.

A door slammed.

Richard stepped into the hallway.

Two men stood behind him.

He looked at the open compartment in my hand.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely frightened.

“Put that down.””

I straightened.

“This is my father's house.””

Richard walked into the study.

“You have no idea what you've found.””

“Then explain it.””

He pointed toward the paper.

“Give it to me.””

Daniel stepped between us.

“Richard, you need to leave.””

Richard ignored him.

“Marcus, listen. Your father was sick. He became paranoid. He started accusing everyone around him.””

“Thomas says you argued with him the night he died.””

Richard's expression changed.

“Thomas?””

“Yes.””

He laughed.

“An old man with a guilty conscience. He's been paid to tell you stories.””

I held up the photograph of the red ledger.

“Where is it?””

Richard's eyes moved toward the clock.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

“You know where it is.””

He stepped closer.

“You're going to ruin everything.””

I stared at him.

“Everything you stole?””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“You don't understand what Dad was doing.””

“What was he doing?””

“He was going to hand the company to you and leave me with nothing.””

“That doesn't justify stealing from my daughter.””

Richard slammed his hand against the desk.

“Your daughter? You think Lily is the only child who matters?””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He looked away.

Then he said something I wasn't prepared for.

“Dad had another family.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“You never knew, did you?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Richard, be careful.””

But Richard continued.

“Our father had another child before he married your mother. He kept her hidden. He sent money for years. Then, when she died, he discovered he had a granddaughter.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Vanessa.””

For a moment, I thought I had misheard.

“That's impossible.””

“Ask Margaret.””

He pointed toward the ceiling.

“Ask anyone who knew Dad before he built this company.””

I felt dizzy.

Vanessa.

My wife.

My father's secret granddaughter?

Richard continued.

“She came into our lives knowing exactly who we were. She didn't marry you because she loved you, Marcus.””

I couldn't speak.

“She wanted access to the company. And she knew Lily's inheritance was connected to it.””

I looked at Daniel.

He appeared just as stunned.

Richard moved toward the door.

“Now give me the key.””

“No.””

His expression changed.

“Then you'll never know the rest.””

He walked away.

The two men followed.

I immediately called Margaret again.

She answered before the first ring finished.

“Marcus, did Richard tell you?””

“Yes.””

There was silence.

Then Margaret said:

“Your father made me promise to tell you the truth if Vanessa ever tried to take control of Lily's inheritance.””

I gripped the phone.

“Is she really his granddaughter?””

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Because your father was trying to protect you from a secret that had already destroyed one family.””

I looked at the open compartment.

“Margaret, where is the archive?””

She gave me an address.

Then she added:

“Marcus, before you go there, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Vanessa isn't the only person who knows about her connection to your father.””

I frowned.

“Who else?””

Margaret's voice became barely audible.

“Your mother knew. And she made a decision years ago that changed the ownership of the company.””

I stared at Daniel.

Margaret continued.

“She left a separate inheritance for Vanessa. But your father never wanted her to receive it.””

“Why?””

“Because he discovered that Vanessa had been involved in the original theft long before she married you.””

I felt the room tilt.

Vanessa hadn't entered my life by accident.

She had entered it with a plan.

And now the only person who could explain the entire story was Margaret Collins.

That evening, as Daniel and I prepared to leave the house, I received a message from Patricia.

It contained a photograph.

Lily was sitting at a kitchen table with a drawing in front of her.

At first, I smiled.

Then I noticed what she had drawn.

A house.

A little girl standing outside.

A woman holding the front door shut.

And a man standing behind the woman.

Underneath, Lily had written:

*THE PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT ME HOME.*

I called Patricia immediately.

“Is Lily okay?””

“She is. But she wanted to show you something.””

“What?””

Patricia hesitated.

“She told me Vanessa used to make her practice what to say if anyone asked why she couldn't live with you.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she make her say?””

Patricia's voice broke.

“That you were too busy to be her father.””

I closed my eyes.

Then Patricia added:

“Marcus, Lily just told me something else.””

“What?””

“She said Vanessa once showed her a photograph of a little girl and told her that girl should have inherited everything instead.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who was the little girl?””

Patricia went quiet.

May you like

Then she said:

“Vanessa.””
