Chapter 3: The Envelope Emily Left Behind
For a moment, the airport seemed to disappear.
I could hear the announcements overhead, the rolling suitcases, and the distant voices of travelers.
But all I could think about was Lily's last sentence.
“What envelope, sweetheart?””
Lily unzipped the smallest compartment of her pink backpack.
She pulled out a folded piece of white paper.
It had yellowed around the edges.
My name was written across the front in Emily's handwriting.
*For Marcus. Only if something happens to me.*
I recognized it immediately.
My hands began to shake.
“Where did you get this?””
“Mom gave it to me before she went to the hospital.””
I looked at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“She told me not to open it unless someone tried to take me away from you.””
My chest tightened.
Emily had known she was dying.
During her final weeks, she had become increasingly careful about certain things. She had organized photographs, written letters, and placed documents in labeled envelopes.
I remembered her sitting beside Lily's bed one evening, whispering something while she thought I was downstairs.
I had assumed it was another goodbye.
Now I wondered what else she had been trying to protect.
“Did you read it?”” I asked.
Lily shook her head.
“No. I promised.””
I held her close.
“You did the right thing.””
Patricia stood quietly beside us.
“Mr. Carter, I think you should take this somewhere private.””
She was right.
I called Daniel again and told him about the envelope.
He asked us to meet him at his office as soon as possible.
Before leaving the airport, I took photographs of the torn boarding pass, the reservation details, and every document Patricia had brought.
I also asked the airline to provide a written record of the cancellation and the second booking.
Then I received another message from Vanessa.
*If you take Lily to Daniel's office, don't expect me to keep protecting you.*
I read it twice.
Protecting me?
From what?
Daniel's office was on the twenty-second floor of a glass building downtown.
He was waiting when we arrived.
A gray-haired man with a calm voice and sharp eyes, Daniel had represented my family for almost fifteen years.
He had handled Emily's estate after her death.
He knew how much Lily meant to me.
When he saw the envelope, he immediately closed his office door.
“Where did this come from?””
“Emily gave it to Lily before she died.””
Daniel studied the handwriting.
“Have you opened it?””
“No.””
He looked at Lily.
“Would you like your father to read it?””
She nodded.
I carefully opened the envelope.
Inside were three folded pages and a small silver key.
The first page began with a sentence that made my stomach drop.
Marcus, if you're reading this, someone has decided that Lily's future is worth more to them than her happiness.
I stopped.
Daniel moved closer.
I continued.
I know Vanessa has been asking questions about the family trust. I know she has been encouraging you to combine our financial accounts. Please don't do it.
My eyes moved across the page.
I discovered that someone had been accessing documents related to Lily's inheritance without my permission. I couldn't prove who it was, but I found evidence that a request had been submitted to change the designated administrator.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you know about this?””
He shook his head.
“No. But I can check the estate records.””
I returned to the letter.
I made arrangements to protect Lily if anything happened to me. The documents are not in our house. I placed them somewhere Vanessa would never think to look.
The next sentence was underlined twice.
The key is for the storage box at First National Bank. Box 318.
I stared at the small silver key.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Marcus, do you remember Emily opening a safety deposit box?””
“No.””
“She may have arranged it independently.””
I continued reading.
There is one more thing you need to know. The person who helped me prepare those documents was someone you already trust.
I stopped again.
There was a name at the bottom of the page.
*Daniel.*
I looked at my attorney.
He didn't move.
For several seconds, none of us spoke.
Then Daniel slowly took off his glasses.
“Marcus, I need you to listen carefully.””
I placed the letter on his desk.
“What does this mean?””
“It means Emily and I discussed a contingency plan shortly before she died.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she specifically asked me not to unless certain conditions were met.””
I stared at him.
“What conditions?””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“That someone attempted to remove her from your care or interfere with her inheritance.””
My blood ran cold.
“Then why didn't you contact me when the reservation was canceled?””
“I didn't know about the reservation. But if Vanessa submitted paperwork involving Lily's estate, I would have been notified.””
He turned to his computer.
“Give me a few minutes.””
While he worked, Lily sat beside me, holding Emily's photograph.
Daniel opened a secure folder and began checking the estate records.
His expression changed.
“What?”” I asked.
He leaned closer to the screen.
“There was an attempted amendment to the trust three weeks ago.””
“By whom?””
“Someone claiming to act with your authorization.””
“Did I authorize it?””
“No.””
He printed the document.
The request involved changing the management of Lily's inheritance from the original trustee to a newly appointed administrator.
I read the name.
Vanessa Carter.
My wife.
I felt as if the floor had shifted beneath me.
“She had no authority to do that.””
“Correct. The request was rejected because the supporting documentation was incomplete.””
“Was there another attempt?””
Daniel scrolled down.
“Yes.””
He clicked another file.
“This one was submitted four days later.””
I stared at the screen.
The second request contained a forged signature.
Mine.
Someone had copied my signature from an old legal document.
Daniel printed the page and placed it beside the first.
“Marcus, this is serious.””
I looked at Lily.
She was watching us with frightened eyes.
“Is someone going to take my money?”” she asked.
I moved beside her.
“No one is taking anything from you.””
Daniel softened his voice.
“Your mother made sure you would be protected, Lily.””
She looked down at the silver key.
“Then why did Vanessa want me to leave?””
Neither Daniel nor I answered.
My phone vibrated.
A new email had arrived.
It was from Vanessa.
The subject line read:
*We Need to Talk About Lily.*
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
If you want to know why Emily left those documents, ask Daniel what happened the week before she died.
I looked up.
Daniel had gone completely pale.
“Marcus,” he said quietly, “there is something about Emily's final week that I never told you.””
“What?””
He closed the office door and lowered his voice.
“Your wife wasn't the first person to try to access Lily's inheritance.””
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel glanced toward the envelope.
“Three days before Emily died, she came to my office with evidence that someone in your household had been stealing from your daughter.””
He paused.
“And the name she gave me wasn't Vanessa.””
He turned the monitor toward me.
A scanned document appeared.
At the bottom was a signature I recognized instantly.
May you like
My own brother's.
*Richard Carter.*
