Chapter 4: My Brother's Signature

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Richard Carter.

My younger brother.

The same man who had stood beside me at Emily's funeral. The same man who had carried Lily on his shoulders when she was little. The same man who had promised Emily he would always look after us.

His signature sat at the bottom of a financial authorization form.

I looked at Daniel.

“Tell me that's not what I think it is.””

Daniel folded his hands.

“I wish I could.””

“What did Richard do?””

“Three days before Emily died, she came to my office with bank statements and transaction records. She suspected someone had been withdrawing money from an account established for Lily.””

I stared at him.

“How much?””

“Approximately eighty thousand dollars over eleven months.””

My chair scraped backward.

“Eighty thousand?””

Daniel nodded.

“The withdrawals were disguised as educational expenses, medical reimbursements, and administrative fees.””

“But Richard doesn't have access to Lily's trust.””

“He didn't have formal access. However, he was listed as an emergency financial contact when Emily initially established the account.””

I remembered.

After Lily was born, Emily had insisted we create a financial safety net for our daughter. Richard had helped us research investment options because he worked in banking at the time.

I had trusted him completely.

“Did Emily know it was him?””

Daniel opened another folder.

“She had evidence suggesting he was involved. But she hadn't established whether he acted alone.””

I looked at the documents again.

One transaction had been approved by a secondary account.

The account holder was Vanessa.

My stomach tightened.

“So they were working together?””

“Possibly.””

Daniel turned his monitor toward me.

“This is the part you need to understand. Emily didn't simply suspect Richard. She discovered that someone had been using Lily's identity to authorize transactions.””

“Someone?””

“An application was submitted to change the beneficiary information on the trust. The application included Lily's date of birth, Social Security information, and a forged parental authorization.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Why didn't Emily tell me?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She was afraid.””

“Of Richard?””

“Of what might happen if the person responsible discovered she knew.””

I looked at the letter.

Emily's handwriting suddenly seemed different. Every sentence felt like a warning from someone who had known she was running out of time.

“Where are the original documents?””

Daniel glanced at the silver key.

“Box 318. We need to retrieve them.””

“I want to go now.””

“Marcus, there's something else. Before we do that, I recommend you contact the authorities about the attempted removal of Lily.””

I nodded.

Then I looked at my daughter.

“Sweetheart, would you like to stay with Patricia while Daniel and I handle something?””

Lily shook her head.

“I don't want to be away from you.””

“Then you won't be.””

Daniel arranged for a colleague to accompany us to the bank.

Within an hour, we were standing inside a private room at First National Bank.

The manager verified the key and Emily's documentation before opening the safety deposit box.

Inside was a sealed envelope, a small USB drive, several bank statements, and a handwritten notebook.

There was also a photograph.

Emily and Richard.

They were standing outside a restaurant, smiling at the camera.

On the back, Emily had written:

The last day I believed him.

I turned the photograph over.

“Daniel, what happened between them?””

He took the notebook and began reading.

“Emily documented every suspicious transaction. She also recorded dates of conversations with Richard.””

I opened the first bank statement.

A payment of $12,500 had been transferred into an account I didn't recognize.

The second showed $18,000.

The third showed another $9,700.

All had been authorized through an account connected to Richard.

Then I found a handwritten entry.

Richard says the money is being invested for Lily. He refuses to show me the statements. Vanessa says I am being paranoid.

I looked at Daniel.

“Vanessa knew?””

He nodded slowly.

Another entry was dated three days before Emily died.

Richard came to the house today. He argued with me about the trust. He said Marcus would never forgive me if I destroyed the family over money.

My hands began to tremble.

Then I reached the final page.

I heard Richard speaking to Vanessa after midnight. He said that once I was gone, Marcus would be too overwhelmed to question anything. Vanessa told him she could handle Marcus.

I felt sick.

The USB drive was labeled:

*IF THEY TRY AGAIN.*

Daniel placed it carefully into his laptop.

A folder appeared.

Inside were scanned contracts, recorded audio files, and a video.

I clicked the video.

Emily appeared on the screen.

She was sitting in our old living room, wearing the blue sweater I had given her on our anniversary.

Her face was pale.

Her hair had grown thin from chemotherapy.

But her eyes were clear.

“Marcus,” she began, “if you're watching this, then something has happened that I hoped would never happen.””

I stopped breathing.

Emily continued.

“I don't know whether Richard is stealing from Lily or whether Vanessa is helping him. But I know someone is trying to take control of our daughter's future.””

She looked down briefly.

Then she leaned closer to the camera.

“Please don't trust anyone simply because they share your last name.””

The video ended.

I sat motionless.

Lily reached for my hand.

“Daddy, is that Mom?””

I nodded.

She watched the frozen screen.

“Can I see her again?””

I swallowed.

“Of course.””

Daniel copied the files securely.

Then his phone rang.

He answered, listened, and looked at me.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He covered the microphone.

“Richard is here.””

My stomach dropped.

“How does he know we're here?””

Daniel didn't answer.

A moment later, someone knocked on the private room door.

Then a familiar voice called from the other side.

“Marcus? Open up. We need to talk about your daughter.””

Richard.

My brother.

The man whose signature appeared on documents connected to my daughter's missing inheritance.

And apparently, he already knew we had found Emily's evidence.
