Chapter 5: The Brother Who Came to Silence Me
I opened the door.
Richard stood outside wearing a charcoal suit and an expensive watch. His hair was perfectly styled, and he carried the same confident smile he had worn at family gatherings for years.
Behind him stood Vanessa.
She looked directly at me.
“Marcus, thank God. Finally, someone is being reasonable.””
I didn't move.
“What are you doing here?””
Richard stepped forward.
“Can we talk like adults?””
“Not until you explain why your signature is on documents involving Lily's inheritance.””
His smile disappeared.
He glanced at Daniel.
“So you've opened Emily's box.””
I felt my blood turn cold.
“You knew about it?””
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“Marcus, this is exactly why I wanted to speak with you privately.””
Vanessa moved beside him.
“Your brother is trying to help us. Patricia has been feeding you lies, and Daniel is making this into some legal circus.””
I looked at her.
“You booked my daughter a one-way flight to Ohio.””
Vanessa sighed.
“Can we stop exaggerating?””
“Who is Patricia Wells?””
“Someone who has no business involving herself in our marriage.””
“She was listed as the person receiving Lily.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“It was a temporary arrangement.””
“Without my permission?””
“You were unavailable.””
“I was in a meeting for three hours.””
Richard interrupted.
“Marcus, let's focus on the real issue. Lily's trust has become complicated. There are administrative problems that need to be resolved.””
I stared at him.
“Eighty thousand dollars is an administrative problem?””
His jaw tightened.
“Where did you get that figure?””
That was enough.
He knew exactly what I was talking about.
“Did you take money from my daughter's account?””
Richard glanced at Vanessa.
She immediately stepped between us.
“Don't answer that. Daniel has no authority to interrogate you.””
Daniel remained calm.
“Actually, I'm representing Marcus and Lily in this matter. And the records indicate several unauthorized transactions.””
Richard laughed.
“Those transfers were investments.””
“Where are the returns?””
“Private financial arrangements.””
“Then provide the account statements.””
Richard's expression changed.
“You're making a mistake, Daniel.””
I stepped forward.
“Stop threatening my attorney.””
Richard looked at me with something I had never seen in his eyes.
Contempt.
“Marcus, you've always been emotional. Emily knew that. She used to say you couldn't separate business from family.””
I felt the words strike like a slap.
“Don't use my wife's name.””
He continued anyway.
“She was sick, Marcus. She wasn't thinking clearly. She became obsessed with protecting Lily from everyone.””
I grabbed the edge of the door.
“She was protecting Lily from you.””
Richard's smile vanished.
Vanessa touched his arm.
“Let's go. This is pointless.””
But Richard didn't move.
Instead, he looked at Lily.
She was sitting beside Patricia, clutching Emily's photograph.
“Lily,” he said, forcing a warm smile, “come here, sweetheart. Uncle Richard wants to give you a hug.””
Lily moved closer to me.
“No, thank you.””
Richard's smile faltered.
“I haven't seen you in a while.””
“You said Mommy was making trouble.””
The room went silent.
Richard looked at me.
“Where did she hear that?””
Lily's voice trembled.
“I heard you talking to Vanessa on the phone.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“Lily, that's enough.””
My daughter stepped behind me.
“You said Daddy was stupid and Mommy couldn't stop you anymore.””
I stared at Richard.
He didn't deny it.
Instead, he laughed nervously.
“Children misunderstand conversations.””
I reached for my phone.
“I'm documenting everything.””
Richard took a step closer.
“Listen carefully. You don't know what you're dealing with.””
Daniel immediately stood between us.
“That's enough. You need to leave.””
Richard looked around the room, then adjusted his cufflinks.
“Fine. But when the bank freezes the accounts, don't come asking me for help.””
I frowned.
“What accounts?””
He looked at Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
Then Richard said something that changed everything.
“The family company. The one you signed over to me last month.””
I stared at him.
“I didn't sign anything over to you.””
Richard gave a short, humorless laugh.
“You signed the authorization documents. Vanessa witnessed them.””
I turned toward my wife.
“Which documents?””
She looked away.
Daniel immediately pulled out his phone.
“Marcus, don't discuss this any further here. I need to verify the corporate filings.””
Richard smiled.
“By all means. Verify them.””
He walked toward the exit.
Vanessa followed.
Before leaving, she turned around.
“Marcus, you should think about what you're doing. You have a daughter who needs stability. Not a father who spends his days fighting his own family.””
I looked at Lily.
Then back at Vanessa.
“My daughter needs adults who don't lie to her.””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“You'll regret this.””
The door closed.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel opened his laptop again.
“Marcus, I need to check something.””
He accessed the state business registry and searched the company name.
Carter Development Group.
My father had founded it thirty years earlier. I had inherited controlling ownership after his death.
Richard managed daily operations, but I remained the majority shareholder.
At least, I thought I did.
Daniel opened the latest filing.
His face went still.
“What?”” I asked.
He turned the screen toward me.
The filing showed that controlling ownership had been transferred to a holding company.
The listed authorized representative was Vanessa Carter.
I read the document twice.
“This is impossible.””
Daniel pointed to the signature page.
“There's your signature.””
I stared at it.
It looked like mine.
But I had never signed it.
“When was this filed?””
“Last month.””
“Who notarized it?””
Daniel enlarged the page.
A name appeared.
Patricia Wells.
We all turned toward the woman sitting beside Lily.
Patricia went pale.
“I didn't notarize that document.””
Daniel studied the seal.
“Your name and identification number are attached.””
Patricia shook her head.
“Someone stole my credentials after I resigned.””
I looked at the company filing again.
The transfer date was the same day Vanessa had taken me to dinner and asked me to sign several routine household documents.
I remembered her placing a thick folder beside my plate.
She had told me they were insurance renewals and tax forms.
I had signed without reading every page.
My wife hadn't simply canceled Lily's vacation.
She had been systematically removing my control over the company.
And now I understood why she wanted Lily out of the house.
But Daniel noticed something else.
He enlarged the final page.
“Marcus, look at the beneficiary designation.””
A second company was listed as the ultimate recipient of the assets.
It wasn't owned by Vanessa.
It wasn't owned by Richard.
It was registered overseas.
And the director's name was someone I had never heard of.
*Ethan Wells.*
Patricia stared at the screen.
Then she whispered:
“That's impossible.””
I turned toward her.
“Who is Ethan Wells?””
May you like
She swallowed.
“My son.””
