Chapter 11: The Sister My Daughter Never Knew

Nia couldn't move.

She stared at the young woman holding the baby.

Lily looked to be around twenty-five.

She had dark hair, tired eyes, and a small scar near her eyebrow.

The infant in her arms was approximately six months old.

"Who is she?"" Nia whispered.

My father stepped forward.

"Her name is Lily.""

I looked at him.

"Explain.""

He opened the front door wider.

"Please come inside.""

We entered.

The living room was modest, with old furniture and family photographs arranged along the shelves.

One photograph showed my father standing beside a young woman.

It was Lily.

Another showed him holding a newborn baby.

I looked at the picture.

"Is that Grace?""

My father shook his head.

"No. That's Lily's daughter.""

Nia looked at the baby in Lily's arms.

"How old is she?""

"Six months," Lily answered.

Her voice trembled.

"Her name is Emma.""

Nia took a step backward.

"Six months?""

Lily nodded.

"She was born three days before Grace.""

The room seemed to shrink.

I turned toward my father.

"You're telling me there were two babies born around the same time, and nobody told us?""

My father nodded.

"Both babies were born at the same hospital. The hospital had a private arrangement with a fertility and surrogacy program.""

Patricia frowned.

"That is not how the records describe the facility.""

My father looked at her.

"Because the program was hidden.""

Nia shook her head.

"What does that have to do with me?""

Lily approached slowly.

"Your mother worked there.""

Nia stared at her.

"My mother was a teacher.""

"She worked part-time at the hospital's administrative office before she died.""

Nia looked at me.

I held her hand.

Lily continued.

"She discovered that several newborn records were being altered. Some children were being discharged under incorrect identification numbers.""

Patricia opened her briefcase.

"Who was responsible?""

Lily looked toward my father.

"Vanessa.""

My father nodded.

"Vanessa had been financing a private medical program through one of the companies connected to your mother's accounts.""

I felt sick.

"Why?""

"Because the program involved wealthy families who wanted to avoid the normal adoption process. Some arrangements were legal. Others were not.""

Nia's voice broke.

"Was Grace involved?""

My father looked directly at her.

"No. Grace was born to you and Marcus. There is no evidence that your daughter was ever transferred or substituted.""

Nia closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

I pulled her close.

"Then why was there another record?""

My father answered.

"Because Vanessa used Nia's admission number to conceal Lily's daughter's discharge paperwork.""

Lily looked down at Emma.

"Her biological mother died during childbirth.""

The room went silent.

Lily continued.

"My mother had been helping the woman arrange a safe placement. When she died, Vanessa took control of the paperwork.""

I frowned.

"Why would Vanessa use Nia's records?""

"Because Nia's delivery happened on the same day, at the same hospital, and her file had already been marked for private administrative handling.""

Nia shook her head.

"I never agreed to that.""

"I know," Lily said quickly.

"Your mother tried to stop it.""

Nia looked at her.

"What happened to my mother?""

Lily's eyes filled.

"She discovered the false discharge authorization. She copied the records and confronted Vanessa.""

My father stepped closer.

"Three weeks later, she was reported dead.""

Nia covered her mouth.

"Reported?""

Patricia looked sharply at him.

"What do you mean?""

My father took a breath.

"Her death certificate was issued after a car accident. But the medical records were incomplete. There was never a proper identification of the remains.""

Nia began shaking.

"Are you saying my mother might be alive?""

My father nodded slowly.

"I'm saying we never found enough evidence to establish what happened to her.""

Nia sat down.

I knelt in front of her.

"Baby, look at me.""

She shook her head.

"I thought she was dead.""

"I know.""

"I went to her funeral.""

My father looked down.

"I'm sorry.""

Nia wiped her cheeks.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?""

"Because Vanessa was watching everyone connected to the investigation.""

I turned toward my father.

"Why did you disappear?""

He sat down heavily.

"Because I found out that Vanessa had access to the hospital's financial records, your mother's accounts, and several of the company's private security contracts.""

"Mom helped her.""

"Your mother believed she was helping Vanessa claim money she deserved. She didn't know the entire arrangement.""

I frowned.

"You're defending her?""

"No. I'm explaining what happened.""

Patricia placed several documents on the table.

"Then let's establish what can be proven.""

My father nodded.

He opened a wooden cabinet and removed a thick folder.

Inside were copies of hospital correspondence, bank statements, and a series of photographs.

He handed one to Nia.

It showed a woman standing outside the hospital.

Nia gasped.

"Mom.""

The woman wore a blue coat and carried a handbag.

She looked older than in Nia's childhood photographs, but there was no mistaking her face.

"Where was this taken?""

"Outside the facility where I was recovering," my father replied.

"When?""

"Four years ago.""

Nia stared at him.

"Four years?""

"I saw her twice.""

"Why didn't you bring her to me?""

My father looked devastated.

"Because she asked me not to.""

Nia stood.

"She knew I was alive?""

"Yes.""

"And she never contacted me?""

My father shook his head.

"She believed Vanessa was still monitoring her.""

Nia began crying again.

I looked at my father.

"Where is she now?""

He hesitated.

"I don't know.""

Lily gently touched Nia's arm.

"But I have something that might help.""

She reached into a small bag and removed a folded letter.

"My grandmother gave this to me before she disappeared.""

Nia opened it.

The handwriting was familiar.

She pressed the paper against her chest.

It was her mother's handwriting.

My dearest Nia,

If you ever receive this letter, please understand that leaving you was the hardest decision I ever made. I have been trying to protect you from people who believe money gives them the right to control other people's lives.

Nia began sobbing.

I put my arm around her.

She continued reading.

There is something I need you to know about your father. The story you were told about his death is not true.

Nia stopped.

She looked up.

"My father?""

I frowned.

She had told me her father died when she was twelve.

My father leaned forward.

"What does it say?""

Nia continued.

Your father is alive. And he has been searching for you.

The letter slipped from her fingers.

Lily covered her mouth.

Patricia stood.

I looked at my father.

"Who is Nia's father?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at the photograph of the woman in the blue coat.

Then he said:

"His name is Daniel Lewis.""

Patricia went completely still.

I turned toward her.

"Do you know him?""

She looked at Nia.

Then at my father.

May you like

And finally, she whispered:

"Daniel Lewis was my husband.""
