Chapter 12: The Name That Connected Both Families

Patricia looked as though someone had pulled the ground from beneath her.

She sat down slowly.

"Daniel was your father?""

Nia nodded.

"That's what my mother wrote.""

Patricia pressed her fingers against her forehead.

"Dear God.""

I looked between them.

"Can somebody explain why everyone seems to know everybody except me?""

Patricia stood and walked toward the window.

"Daniel and I were married for eleven years. We had a daughter.""

Nia stared at her.

"Who?""

Patricia turned around.

"Vanessa.""

Silence.

Lily looked down at Emma.

My father closed his eyes.

I felt a cold sensation move through my chest.

"You're telling me Vanessa is Nia's half-sister?""

Patricia nodded.

"Yes.""

Nia shook her head.

"No. That can't be right.""

Patricia approached her carefully.

"Daniel was my first husband. We separated when Vanessa was young. Years later, he became involved with another woman.""

Nia's voice trembled.

"My mother?""

Patricia nodded.

"Yes.""

Nia sat down.

I took her hand.

"Are you okay?""

She shook her head.

"How can this be happening?""

Patricia opened her briefcase and removed an old photograph.

It showed three people standing outside a house.

A young Patricia.

A little girl.

And a man with dark hair.

"That's Daniel," she said.

Nia stared at the photograph.

"That's my father?""

"Yes.""

Patricia turned the picture over.

A date was written on the back.

Twenty-nine years earlier.

Nia looked at her.

"Why did my mother tell me he was dead?""

Patricia's eyes filled.

"Because Daniel disappeared shortly after Vanessa was born.""

My father finally spoke.

"Daniel was involved in the original financial investigation.""

Patricia looked at him.

"You're leaving something out.""

My father sighed.

"Daniel discovered that several people were using the hotel business to move money through private medical facilities.""

I looked at the two of them.

"Who?""

My father looked directly at me.

"Your mother, Evelyn. Vanessa. And two executives who worked for the company.""

Patricia shook her head.

"Daniel never told me any of that.""

"He couldn't. He believed somebody was following him.""

Nia looked down at the letter.

"Did he know about me?""

My father nodded.

"He knew you existed. He wanted to meet you.""

"Then why didn't he?""

My father hesitated.

"Because he believed Vanessa would use you against him.""

Nia's eyes filled.

"So he stayed away?""

"Yes.""

I could barely understand the situation.

Our families had been connected for decades.

My mother had hidden a daughter.

My wife's mother had hidden a husband.

My father had faked his death.

And a hospital had altered records involving two newborn babies.

It was no longer simply a financial investigation.

It was a web of secrets that had been growing long before Nia and I met.

Patricia opened another folder.

"I need to tell you something about Daniel.""

She removed a document.

It was an old company registration form.

At the bottom were three signatures.

Daniel Lewis.

Evelyn Carter.

And Richard Coleman.

I recognized the third name immediately.

My mother's financial adviser.

"What company was this?""

Patricia pointed to the top.

"Carter Medical Holdings.""

I looked at my father.

"You owned a medical company?""

"No. It was created as an investment vehicle.""

"For what?""

"To fund a chain of private medical facilities.""

Patricia shook her head.

"That company was never properly disclosed in the estate records.""

My father nodded.

"Because it was being used to conceal transactions.""

I looked at Nia.

"Did your mother work for them?""

Patricia examined the old registration.

"According to this, Daniel and Evelyn were both directors.""

Nia stood.

"My mother was a schoolteacher.""

Patricia looked at her.

"She may have been a teacher. But she also had financial authority within this company.""

Nia stepped backward.

"I don't believe this.""

My father spoke gently.

"Your mother wasn't a bad person, Nia. She was trying to expose something.""

Nia wiped her eyes.

"Then why did she leave me?""

My father had no answer.

Lily approached with Emma.

"Maybe because she thought staying away was the only way to keep you safe.""

Nia looked at her.

"Did you know all of this?""

Lily shook her head.

"My grandmother told me pieces. I didn't know you were connected until Vanessa showed up at my apartment last month.""

"What did she want?""

Lily looked toward Patricia.

"She wanted the original records.""

I stepped forward.

"What records?""

Lily reached into her bag and removed a small USB drive.

"These.""

My father stared at it.

"Where did you get that?""

"My grandmother gave it to me.""

Patricia immediately took out her laptop.

"May I?""

Lily nodded.

Patricia connected the drive.

A folder appeared.

Inside were several scanned documents, bank statements, and a collection of audio recordings.

One file was labeled:

*EVENING OF THE HOSPITAL TRANSFER.*

Patricia clicked it.

A man's voice came through the speakers.

"Everything has been arranged. The second discharge record will be removed before the morning audit.""

Another voice answered.

A woman's voice.

Evelyn.

"Vanessa, make sure Daniel doesn't see the original.""

I looked at my father.

He was staring at the screen.

Then another voice spoke.

Richard.

"What about the mother?""

Evelyn replied:

"She knows too much.""

Nia grabbed my arm.

The recording continued.

Vanessa's voice became clear.

"Then we need to make sure she never talks again.""

Patricia stopped the recording.

Nobody moved.

Nia looked at her.

"That was my mother they were talking about?""

Patricia nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

My father stood.

"We need to get this to the authorities immediately.""

I looked at the file list.

There were twelve recordings.

"Listen to the rest.""

Patricia shook her head.

"Not without making secure copies first.""

But I had already noticed something.

The final recording was dated five years ago.

The day my father supposedly died.

I clicked it.

A door opened.

Someone entered a room.

Then I heard my mother's voice.

"Daniel, we need to finish this tonight.""

A man answered.

"You're making a terrible mistake, Evelyn.""

Then came a sound.

A chair scraping.

A glass breaking.

And finally, my mother's voice again.

"If you tell Marcus what happened, I'll make sure he loses everything.""

I looked at my father.

He had gone pale.

"Who was that man?""

He didn't answer.

I turned up the volume.

The recording continued.

The man spoke again.

"Marcus isn't the one you should be afraid of.""

There was a pause.

Then he said:

"You're forgetting who actually signed the hospital transfer.""

A second voice entered the room.

A woman.

A woman I recognized.

Patricia.

She was standing beside us, listening to her own voice coming through the speakers.

But she looked just as shocked as everyone else.

On the recording, Patricia said:

"Daniel, please. Don't make me choose.""

I turned toward her.

"What did you choose?""

Patricia's lips trembled.

"I don't remember this conversation.""

The recording continued.

Then came Daniel's voice.

"Then I'll make the choice for you.""

A loud crash followed.

The recording ended.

Patricia stepped backward.

My father grabbed the edge of the table.

And Nia whispered:

"That sounds like the night my mother disappeared.""

Before anyone could speak, the laptop chimed.

A new file had appeared in the folder.

It hadn't been there a moment earlier.

The filename was:

*NIA — READ BEFORE YOU TRUST ANYONE.*

Patricia looked at the screen.

My father looked at Nia.

I reached for the mouse.

The document opened.

At the top was a photograph of Nia as a newborn.

Beneath it was a sentence written in Daniel's handwriting.

If my daughter ever discovers the truth, tell her that the woman who raised her was not the woman who gave birth to her.

Nia stopped breathing.

I stared at the words.

Then she whispered:

"Marcus...""

Her eyes moved from the screen to Patricia.

"Are you saying my mother wasn't my biological mother?""

Patricia slowly shook her head.

"No, sweetheart.""

She looked at the photograph.

Then at my father.

And finally, she said the words none of us had expected.

"Your biological mother was Evelyn Carter.""

My entire body went cold.

The woman who had slapped my wife through an employee.

The woman who had tried to steal from my daughter.

The woman I had called Mom my entire life.

She was also Nia's biological mother.

May you like

And suddenly, the reason Vanessa had been so desperate to keep Nia away from the penthouse became terrifyingly clear.

*My wife and I had unknowingly married into the same family.*
