Chapter 13: The Mother Who Had Two Daughters

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Nia stood beside the laptop, staring at the photograph of herself as a newborn.

My father sat with his head lowered.

Patricia had both hands pressed against the edge of the table.

Nobody seemed capable of speaking.

Finally, Nia broke the silence.

"Say that again.""

Patricia looked at her.

"Evelyn is your biological mother.""

Nia shook her head.

"No. My mother was Margaret Lewis. She raised me.

She taught me how to read. She sat beside me when I was sick. She held my hand when my father supposedly died.""

"I know.""

"Then why are you telling me that a woman who has spent the last several days trying to destroy my marriage is my mother?""

Patricia's eyes filled with tears.

"Because the records say so.""

Nia laughed once.

It wasn't a happy sound.

"Records?""

She pointed at the screen.

"You're going to replace twenty-eight years of memories with a computer file?""

My father stood.

"Nia, please listen.""

She turned toward him.

"Don't.""

He stopped.

"You knew?""

He lowered his eyes.

"I suspected.""

"How long?""

"Since before your wedding.""

Nia stepped backward.

"And you let me marry Marcus?""

My father looked devastated.

"I wanted you both to have a normal life.""

"Normal?""

Her voice cracked.

"Your family has been following me, hiding my medical records, and trying to take my daughter's inheritance. And you thought keeping quiet would give me a normal life?""

I moved toward her.

She raised one hand.

"Please, Marcus. I need a minute.""

I stopped.

Patricia opened the laptop again.

"There is more.""

Nia looked at her.

"Of course there is.""

Patricia opened a scanned document.

It was a hospital delivery record dated twenty-eight years earlier.

The mother's name was Evelyn Carter.

The infant's name was listed as Nia.

But the document also contained a handwritten amendment.

Transferred to Margaret Lewis under private family arrangement.

Nia read the words.

Then she looked at Patricia.

"Who is Margaret Lewis?""

Patricia sat down.

"Daniel's sister.""

Nia's face changed.

"My aunt?""

Patricia nodded.

"Margaret and her husband had been trying to adopt a child for several years. When Evelyn gave birth to you, she asked Margaret to raise you.""

"Why?""

Patricia looked toward my father.

He answered.

"Because Evelyn was already married to your father at the time. She had become pregnant during a relationship with Daniel.""

I stared.

"Wait. Nia's biological father was Daniel?""

My father nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked at Patricia.

"Then why did you say Vanessa was Daniel's daughter?""

"She is. Vanessa was born during my marriage to Daniel. Nia was born later.""

Nia closed her eyes.

"How many people knew?""

My father answered quietly.

"Margaret. Daniel. Evelyn.

Patricia. And me.""

Nia looked at him.

"You all decided my life without asking me.""

He didn't defend himself.

Patricia continued.

"Margaret loved you as her own daughter. She believed the adoption arrangement was permanent and that keeping the truth hidden would protect you.""

"Protect me from what?""

"From Vanessa.""

I looked at the old documents.

"What does Vanessa have to do with this?""

Patricia took a breath.

"Vanessa discovered the truth when she was a teenager. She learned that Evelyn had another daughter with Daniel. She became convinced that Nia would eventually receive part of the family inheritance.""

Nia shook her head.

"I never wanted their money.""

"I believe you," Patricia said.

"Then why did she attack me?""

My father answered.

"Because your existence threatened Vanessa's position.""

He explained that Evelyn had once promised Vanessa that she would inherit the family's private assets.

But when my father established Grace's trust, he included provisions protecting the inheritance of all legitimate descendants.

That included Nia.

And eventually, Grace.

Vanessa had interpreted Nia's existence as a threat.

She believed that if Nia learned the truth, she could challenge the arrangements that had been made around the family wealth.

"So she tried to take Grace's inheritance before I discovered who I was?"" Nia asked.

"Yes," my father replied.

I looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell me before I married her?""

He lowered his head.

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of what Evelyn and Vanessa would do if the truth became public.""

I felt anger rising.

"You let me marry someone whose entire identity was being hidden from her.""

"I know.""

"You watched us start a family.""

"I know.""

"And you said nothing.""

My father closed his eyes.

"I thought I had more time.""

Nia moved toward the window.

Outside, the morning sun illuminated the garden.

She looked down at Grace, who was sleeping peacefully.

"Does this mean Grace and Emma are related?""

Patricia nodded.

"Yes. They share a grandmother through Nia.""

Lily looked at Emma.

"Then they're cousins.""

Nia gave a small, broken smile.

"At least somebody in this family gets to have a normal relationship.""

For the first time, Lily laughed.

It was brief, but it softened the room.

Then my phone rang.

The screen displayed my mother's name.

I answered.

"Where are you?""

Evelyn's voice sounded unusually calm.

"At home.""

"Why?""

"Because I want to speak to you.""

"About what?""

"About Nia.""

I looked at my wife.

She heard the name.

Her expression hardened.

"Put me on speaker," Patricia whispered.

I did.

My mother continued.

"I understand you've been visiting that house.""

"How do you know?""

"Because I have people who care about this family.""

I almost laughed.

"You have people who spy on us.""

"Marcus, don't be childish.""

"Did you give birth to Nia?""

Silence.

A long silence.

Then my mother said:

"Who told you?""

Nia closed her eyes.

I felt something inside me break.

"Is it true?""

Evelyn sighed.

"Yes.""

Nia stepped closer to the phone.

"Why?""

My mother's voice softened.

"Nia?""

Nia didn't answer.

"I was young. I made a decision that I believed was best.""

"You didn't make a decision. You gave me away.""

"I arranged for you to be raised by people who could provide a stable home.""

"Did you ever think about finding me?""

"Of course I did.""

"Then why did you hit me with all those cruel words at the hotel?""

My mother became defensive.

"I didn't know who you were at the time.""

Nia laughed bitterly.

"That's what everyone keeps saying. Nobody seems to know who I am until they need something from me.""

Evelyn's voice changed.

"Listen to me. We need to meet.""

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa has the original documents. If you don't come to the house tonight, she'll destroy them.""

Patricia leaned toward the phone.

"Which documents, Evelyn?""

My mother went quiet.

Then she answered.

"The adoption papers. The original hospital records. And the proof of who signed the medication orders before your father disappeared.""

My father stood abruptly.

"Tell her to stay away from Vanessa.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

He shook his head.

"Because Vanessa isn't acting alone anymore.""

My mother's voice suddenly became urgent.

"Marcus, listen to me. You have until seven tonight.""

"For what?""

"To bring Nia and Grace to the family house.""

I felt my blood turn cold.

"Absolutely not.""

"If you don't come, Vanessa will release the documents publicly. She'll tell everyone that Nia was illegally adopted, that Grace's birth records were altered, and that your family business has been concealing medical crimes for decades.""

I looked at Patricia.

She was already shaking her head.

My mother continued.

"And there's one more thing.""

"What?""

"Vanessa has the original guardianship agreement. The one with Nia's forged signature.""

"Why does that matter?""

"Because the agreement wasn't just intended to take Grace's money.""

She paused.

"It was designed to make Nia legally responsible for something that happened at the hospital.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then Patricia said:

"Marcus, we need to find Vanessa before seven.""

But Nia was looking at something else.

The photograph of Evelyn holding her newborn daughter.

May you like

And for the first time, my wife whispered the word she had never wanted to say.

"Mother.""
