Chapter 14: The Last Family Dinner
At 6:15 p.m., we arrived at the Carter family estate.
It was the same house where I had spent every Christmas growing up.
The same house where my father had taught me to ride a bicycle.
The same house where my mother had once told me that family was the only thing money could never buy.
Now the front doors stood open.
Two security guards waited near the entrance.
Patricia had advised against bringing Nia and Grace.
But Nia refused to stay behind.
"She's my mother," she had said.
"If I'm going to hear the truth, I want to hear it from her face.""
We had arranged for two independent investigators to remain outside.
Lily stayed with Emma at a secure location.
My father insisted on coming with us.
He wore a dark coat and leaned heavily on his cane.
When we entered the house, my mother was waiting in the dining room.
She had prepared dinner.
Three place settings.
One for me.
One for Nia.
And one for herself.
She looked at Grace.
"She's beautiful.""
Nia didn't respond.
My mother gestured toward the table.
"Please sit.""
I remained standing.
"Where's Vanessa?""
"She'll be here.""
"Then we'll wait.""
Evelyn sighed.
"Marcus, I know you're angry.""
"That's an understatement.""
She folded her hands.
"I made mistakes.""
I stared at her.
"Which ones?""
Her eyes filled.
"All of them.""
Nia finally spoke.
"Why did you give me away?""
My mother looked at her.
"I was nineteen. Daniel was married. I had no money, no support, and no way to raise a child.""
"Margaret raised me.""
"She loved you.""
"I know.""
My mother looked relieved.
"Then you understand.""
Nia shook her head.
"No. I understand that the woman who raised me loved me. I don't understand why you spent my entire adult life pretending I didn't exist.""
Evelyn looked down.
"Because Vanessa threatened to expose everything.""
"What everything?""
My mother took a breath.
"She found out about you when she was seventeen. She demanded that I change the inheritance arrangements. She believed you would eventually inherit part of the family fortune.""
I laughed bitterly.
"So you hid Nia to protect Vanessa's feelings?""
"It wasn't that simple.""
"Then make it simple.""
My mother stood.
"Your father had made promises to Daniel. He wanted Nia protected. He wanted her to receive a portion of the family assets. Vanessa believed that was unfair.""
Nia looked at her.
"I never asked for anything.""
"I know.""
"Then why did you let her treat me like that?""
My mother didn't answer.
I walked toward the fireplace.
On the mantel stood a photograph of my father and me.
I picked it up.
"Do you remember this?""
Evelyn nodded.
"Your twenty-first birthday.""
"That was the night Dad told me I would eventually run the company.""
She smiled faintly.
"He was proud of you.""
"Then why did you try to destroy everything he built?""
Her expression hardened.
"I was trying to save the company.""
"By stealing from Grace?""
"By preventing a financial collapse.""
"Those aren't the same thing.""
Before she could answer, the front door opened.
Vanessa walked into the dining room.
She wore a black dress and carried a folder.
"How touching," she said.
"The whole family together.""
I turned.
"Where are the original documents?""
Vanessa placed the folder on the table.
"Safe.""
"Give them to Patricia.""
She laughed.
"Patricia has never been particularly good at protecting this family.""
Patricia stepped forward.
"Vanessa, you need to understand that the evidence in your possession is already being preserved.""
Vanessa looked at her.
"By whom?""
"Law enforcement.""
Her smile disappeared.
I pulled out my phone.
"Would you like to explain the hospital transfers yourself, or should we let the investigators do it?""
Vanessa glanced toward my mother.
Evelyn looked frightened.
Vanessa opened the folder.
"Before anyone starts making accusations, perhaps you should read this.""
She removed a document and placed it in front of Nia.
It was a guardianship agreement.
Nia's name appeared at the bottom.
The signature looked almost perfect.
Almost.
Nia examined it.
"This isn't mine.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"That's what you keep saying.""
Patricia picked up the document.
"The signature is forged.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Prove it.""
Patricia placed another document beside it.
A handwriting analysis report.
"Already done.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
Patricia continued.
"And the electronic metadata indicates that this agreement was created using your personal computer.""
Vanessa slammed her hand against the table.
"That proves nothing.""
I looked at her.
"Then why are you so nervous?""
She turned toward my mother.
"Tell him.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"Vanessa, please.""
"Tell him what you promised me!""
My mother lowered her eyes.
Vanessa's voice rose.
"You said I would inherit the company. You said Nia would never become part of this family.""
I stared at my mother.
"Is that true?""
Evelyn whispered:
"I was trying to keep the peace.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Peace? You gave birth to her and then handed her to another woman. You let me grow up believing I was your only daughter. Then you built an entire trust around a granddaughter I had never met.""
Nia looked at her.
"You weren't entitled to my daughter's inheritance.""
Vanessa turned sharply.
"You think you deserve it?""
"I don't care about the money.""
"Of course you don't. You already have Marcus.""
Nia stood.
"I have a husband who loves me. I have a daughter who needs me. That's enough.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Then sign the agreement.""
She pushed a pen toward Nia.
My wife didn't touch it.
"What agreement?""
Vanessa smiled.
"A statement accepting responsibility for the unauthorized hospital records.""
Patricia immediately stepped forward.
"Do not sign anything.""
Vanessa ignored her.
"If you sign, this ends. Your daughter keeps her inheritance. Marcus keeps his company. Everyone goes home.""
I looked at the document.
It contained a paragraph accepting responsibility for the creation and unauthorized alteration of newborn discharge records.
It would make Nia the apparent person responsible for the hospital discrepancies.
I looked at Vanessa.
"You want my wife to take the blame for your crimes.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"Someone has to.""
My father stood.
"Enough.""
Vanessa froze.
She looked at him.
For the first time, her confidence disappeared.
"You're supposed to be dead.""
My father took a step forward.
"You tried very hard to make that happen.""
Vanessa backed away.
My mother covered her mouth.
My father continued.
"I know about the medication. I know about the forged records. And I know what happened to Daniel.""
Patricia went still.
I turned.
"What happened to Daniel?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Don't listen to him.""
My father looked directly at her.
"Daniel didn't disappear because he wanted to.""
He removed a photograph from his coat.
It showed a hospital corridor.
A man was being wheeled toward an elevator.
His face was visible.
Daniel Lewis.
Nia stared at it.
"That's my father.""
My father nodded.
"Yes. And he's alive.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"That's impossible.""
My father turned toward the dining-room entrance.
"Come in, Daniel.""
The door opened.
An older man stepped into the room.
He had gray hair, a walking stick, and tired eyes.
Nia stared at him.
The man looked at her.
Then he began crying.
"My little girl.""
Nia covered her mouth.
"Father?""
He nodded.
"I'm sorry.""
She walked toward him slowly.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then Daniel opened his arms.
Nia fell against his chest.
I watched my wife meet the father she had believed dead since childhood.
My mother began crying.
Vanessa looked furious.
"This changes nothing!""
Daniel lifted his head.
"It changes everything.""
He reached into his coat and removed a small recording device.
"Because I have the original conversation from the night you arranged the hospital transfer.""
Vanessa lunged toward him.
Security officers rushed into the room.
She was stopped before she reached the device.
Daniel pressed a button.
His own voice came through the speakers.
Then Evelyn's.
Then Vanessa's.
And finally, a sentence that made the entire room go silent.
Vanessa's voice:
"Once the baby records are changed, nobody will ever know which child was supposed to go home with which family.""
Nia pulled away from Daniel.
"What?""
Daniel looked at her.
Then at Grace.
May you like
And said:
"There's one final truth about the night you were born.""
