Chapter 10: The Person Behind Her

The video shook slightly as the old security camera struggled against the darkness.

My mother stood beside the car.

Her face was turned toward the road.

And behind her—

Monica.

But that wasn't the part that made me stop breathing.

Someone else stood beside Monica.

Darren leaned toward the laptop.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

The figure stepped into the weak light.

A teenage girl.

Long hair.

A pale graduation-style dress.

Kayla.

I turned around.

Kayla was standing in the doorway.

Her face had gone completely white.

“No,” she whispered.

The video continued.

Young Kayla stood beside Monica, watching my mother argue with them.

Darren slowly turned toward his stepdaughter.

“Kayla?””

She backed away.

“I was seventeen.””

Monica rushed toward her.

“Don't say anything.””

Darren's voice exploded.

“Don't tell her what to say!””

Kayla flinched.

I stared at the screen.

My mother's lips moved.

The old audio crackled.

“You can't keep doing this.””

Young Monica answered:

“You're going to destroy this family.””

My mother's voice rose.

“It's already destroyed.””

Then Kayla spoke.

Her younger voice sounded frightened.

“Mom, let's just go.””

I stared at her.

She had been there.

She had known.

Maybe not everything.

But something.

Darren looked at Kayla.

“You knew what happened to Arielle's mother?””

Kayla shook her head violently.

“I didn't know where she went.””

“But you saw her that night.””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Kayla started crying.

“I thought Mom was just arguing with her.””

I looked at Monica.

“What happened next?””

Monica didn't answer.

The footage showed my mother reaching into her car.

She pulled out a small envelope.

She held it toward Monica.

“You need to give this to Darren.””

Monica took a step back.

“No.””

“It's the truth.””

“I don't want it.””

“You don't get to choose anymore.””

My mother's hand extended.

The envelope changed hands.

I looked at the laptop.

“That was the first envelope.””

Jordan shook his head.

“No.””

Darren looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Jordan pointed at the screen.

“Look at the label.””

The camera zoomed poorly.

The writing was visible.

*DARREN.*

I looked at the envelope Monica had taken from the metal box.

The handwriting matched.

Darren whispered, “She's been carrying the same secret for twenty years.””

The footage continued.

My mother turned toward Kayla.

“Take care of Arielle.””

Kayla nodded through tears.

Then Monica grabbed my mother's wrist.

“Don't leave.””

My mother pulled away.

“I have to.””

She got into the car.

Monica stood there.

Kayla beside her.

The car started.

Then a second vehicle entered the frame.

The dark SUV.

Monica's SUV.

It stopped behind my mother's car.

My mother looked into the rearview mirror.

Her expression changed.

She stepped out.

Monica approached her.

They argued.

Then something happened outside the camera's range.

The image shook.

My mother suddenly fell against the side of the car.

I gasped.

Darren grabbed the table.

“What happened?””

Monica whispered, “I didn't hit her.””

Jordan stared at the screen.

“Then what happened?””

The footage continued.

A third person stepped out of Monica's SUV.

Victor.

Darren looked at him.

“You were there.””

Victor lowered his head.

“Yes.””

“You said you weren't.””

“I lied.””

Darren stepped toward him.

“You were there when she disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victor looked at me.

“Because Monica called me.””

My voice came out barely audible.

“To do what?””

Victor swallowed.

“To take the documents.””

I stared.

“What documents?””

“The birth certificate. The custody agreement. The paternity test.””

My mother had been fighting to keep them.

Victor had been sent to erase them.

I looked at Monica.

“And then?””

Monica's eyes filled with tears.

“She left.””

Jordan shook his head.

“That's not what the footage shows.””

The video showed my mother standing again.

She appeared dizzy but conscious.

She opened her car door.

Then she looked directly toward the camera.

As if she knew it was there.

She walked toward the old house.

Monica followed.

Victor stayed near the SUV.

Kayla remained beside the road.

My mother entered the house.

Monica followed her inside.

The camera continued recording the empty driveway.

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

Then twenty.

Finally, Monica came back outside.

Alone.

She carried a small suitcase.

Darren stared at her.

“You told everyone she drove away.””

Monica nodded.

“But she didn't.””

“No.””

“Where was she?””

Monica looked at the floor.

“Inside.””

Jordan stepped forward.

“Alive?””

Monica closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

My heart stopped.

“You left her inside?””

“I panicked.””

“What did you do?””

“I locked the door.””

Darren's voice was hollow.

“You locked my daughter's mother inside this house?””

“For one night.””

Jordan stared at her.

“What happened the next morning?””

Monica began sobbing.

“She was gone.””

Victor spoke quietly.

“She wasn't gone.””

Everyone turned toward him.

“What?””

Victor reached into his briefcase.

“She escaped through the basement.””

My mother had escaped.

She had survived.

For twenty years, I had believed she abandoned me.

But she had been trying to come back.

Victor handed me the final photograph.

“She stayed away because Monica threatened to destroy you if she returned.””

I looked at Monica.

“Is that true?””

Monica could barely lift her head.

“Yes.””

Darren's face was wet with tears.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I knew you'd leave me.””

“You were right.””

Monica nodded.

“I know.””

Kayla suddenly stepped forward.

“Mom.””

Monica looked at her.

Kayla wiped her cheeks.

“You told me she was dead.””

Monica froze.

“I told you she left.””

“No.””

Kayla shook her head.

“You told me she was never coming back.””

She looked at me.

“I thought you knew.””

I couldn't speak.

Then my phone vibrated.

Everyone stopped.

Unknown number.

One message.

*Arielle, I think you finally know enough.*

My hands shook.

Another message appeared.

*I'm sorry I waited so long.*

I looked at Jordan.

Then Darren.

Then Monica.

A third message appeared.

*Come to the old Ellis Family Resource Center. Alone.*

Beneath it was an address.

My mother.

Alive.

I stared at the screen.

Darren stepped toward me.

“You're not going alone.””

I looked at him.

For the first time that morning, he didn't look like the father who had been deceived.

He looked like the man from my mother's recording.

The man who had chosen me.

“No,” I said softly.

“I won't.””

I held up the phone.

“But I know who I'm going to see.””

Monica whispered my name.

I turned toward her.

“You spent eighteen years trying to make me believe I wasn't wanted.””

She began crying.

“But you were wrong.””

I looked at Darren.

Then Jordan.

Then Kayla.

“I was wanted by everyone who mattered.””

Darren took my hand.

The laptop kept playing the final seconds of the old footage.

On the screen, my mother walked into the darkness beyond the house.

Alive.

Running.

Carrying the truth with her.

And twenty years later, she had finally come back for me.

The graduation ceremony could wait.

The pictures could wait.
