Chapter 6: Behind the Wall
Darren didn't look at Monica.
He walked to the graduation-photo backdrop and pulled it aside.
The white fabric slid across the floor.
Behind it was an old wooden wall.
Nothing unusual.
Just faded paint.
A row of framed family photographs hung across it.
Jordan stood beside me.
“Third frame from the left.””
Darren removed it.
Behind the frame was a narrow metal panel.
He stared.
“How long has this been here?””
Jordan answered quietly.
“Since before Arielle was born.””
Darren looked at me.
Then he unscrewed the panel.
Inside was a shallow compartment.
A small metal box sat in the darkness.
My pulse jumped.
Monica whispered, “Please.””
Darren reached for it.
She stepped forward.
“Darren, listen to me.””
He lifted the box.
“You've been lying to me for twenty years.””
“I was trying to keep this family together.””
“This isn't a family.””
His voice broke.
“It's a crime scene.””
Monica stopped.
Darren carried the box to the table.
Jordan watched silently.
The key from the envelope fit the lock.
*Click.*
The lid opened.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
A hospital bracelet.
A birth certificate.
And a small cassette recorder.
My hands went cold.
I picked up the hospital bracelet.
*BABY GIRL — ELLIS*
I looked at Jordan.
“Why does it say Ellis?””
He looked down.
“Because that was your father's surname.””
Darren closed his eyes.
I put the bracelet down.
Then I picked up the birth certificate.
The father's name had been blacked out with thick ink.
I stared at it.
“Who did this?””
Jordan didn't answer.
I already knew.
Monica.
Darren picked up one of the letters.
He read silently.
His face changed.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
The handwriting was my mother's.
Monica, I am giving you one chance to tell Darren the truth.
My breath caught.
I read the next line.
If anything happens to me, he needs to know Arielle is Jordan's daughter.
I looked at Monica.
She was crying now.
I held up the letter.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“You knew my whole life.””
“Yes.””
“And you let Dad believe you were protecting me.””
“I was.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Monica covered her mouth.
Darren picked up another letter.
His eyes scanned it.
Then he looked at Monica.
“This one is dated the day before your wedding.””
Monica whispered, “Darren…”
“What happened that day?””
She didn't answer.
Jordan stepped forward.
“She threatened your mother.””
I looked at him.
“My mother?””
“She told her that if she came to your father with the truth, she'd never see you again.””
I stared at Monica.
“Did you?””
Monica shook her head.
“I didn't mean for it to go that far.””
“What did you mean?””
“I wanted you.””
The words came out almost inaudibly.
“I wanted a daughter.””
Darren's eyes filled with tears.
“So you stole mine.””
Monica dropped her gaze.
“I thought I could love her better.””
“You cut her hair last night.””
She looked at me.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
Monica looked toward the hidden camera.
“Of what she'd find.””
Darren's head snapped toward her.
“What does that mean?””
Monica didn't answer.
I opened the metal box again.
At the bottom was one final object.
A second USB drive.
Different from mine.
Older.
Labeled in faded black ink.
*FOR ARIELLE — WHEN SHE TURNS 18.*
My fingers trembled.
Jordan whispered, “Your mother made that.””
I looked at him.
“What’s on it?””
He swallowed.
“Everything she couldn't tell you in person.””
Darren reached for the laptop.
Monica suddenly grabbed the USB from my hand.
“No.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
Her breathing became ragged.
“Because you don't know what she recorded.””
Darren took the USB from Monica.
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“We're watching it.””
Monica backed away.
“No, Darren.””
He inserted the drive.
The screen went black for a second.
Then a video appeared.
A woman sat in front of the camera.
My mother.
Older than the photographs.
Tired.
Terrified.
But alive.
My knees nearly gave out.
She looked directly into the camera.
And then she said my name.
“Arielle, if you're watching this…”
The video paused.
The laptop froze.
Darren stared at the screen.
Jordan stepped closer.
“That's not supposed to happen.””
Then the screen flickered.
A file appeared.
*VIDEO 2 — DO NOT SHOW MONICA.*
Behind us, Monica whispered:
“Darren…”
May you like
And for the first time, her voice wasn't afraid of being exposed.
It was afraid of what was about to be revealed.
