Chapter 3: The Envelope
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The laptop fan hummed beneath the silence.
A bird chirped somewhere beyond the graduation backdrop.
It felt horribly normal.
Darren closed the laptop halfway.
“What did you just say?””
Monica stared at him.
“I didn't mean it like that.””
Darren's voice dropped.
“Then tell me how you meant it.””
Monica took a breath.
“I was angry.””
“You were standing beside her bed at midnight.””
“I know.””
“You put an envelope under her mattress.””
“I know.””
“You said you'd make me believe she ran away.””
“I said I was angry!””
Her voice cracked across the yard.
Kayla stepped backward.
“Mom…”
Monica turned toward her.
“Stay out of this.””
Kayla's face changed.
She looked frightened now.
Darren noticed.
“Kayla.””
She swallowed.
“What?””
“Did you know about this?””
Monica immediately stepped between them.
“Don't drag Kayla into our problems.””
Darren stared at her.
“Our problems?””
He pointed toward the laptop.
“That video is about Arielle.””
Monica's hands trembled.
“Arielle has been trying to turn you against me for years.””
I almost laughed.
Almost.
Instead, I reached into my gown again.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“There’s more.””
Monica's eyes snapped toward my hand.
I pulled out my phone.
“I copied the footage before I gave you the USB.””
Darren's expression hardened.
“You planned this?””
“I protected myself.””
Monica shook her head.
“This is ridiculous.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“What’s ridiculous is you thinking I wouldn’t notice.””
Darren stepped closer to Monica.
“Where is the envelope?””
Monica said nothing.
“Arielle said you put it under her mattress.””
“I was going to throw it away.””
“Where is it?””
She looked toward the house.
Darren followed her eyes.
Then he walked inside.
Monica grabbed his sleeve.
“Darren, wait.””
He pulled free.
“Don't touch me.””
The words landed harder than shouting.
I followed him inside.
Kayla stayed behind.
The bedroom door was still open.
My room looked exactly as it had the night before.
The mirror.
The vanity.
The scattered hair I hadn't had time to clean.
Darren went straight to my bed.
He lifted the mattress edge.
Nothing.
He checked beneath the pillow.
Nothing.
Then he looked at me.
“Arielle, are you sure?””
“I watched her put it there.””
Darren crouched.
His hand moved beneath the bed.
His fingers touched something.
He pulled it out.
The white envelope.
*DARREN.*
Written across the front.
He stood.
Monica appeared in the doorway.
“Darren.””
He looked at the envelope.
Then at her.
“What's inside?””
“You don't want to know.””
His face went still.
“That's not an answer.””
Monica stepped into the room.
“It was supposed to protect you.””
“From what?””
She didn't respond.
Darren turned the envelope over.
The seal was intact.
He looked at me.
“Did you open it?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because it had your name on it.””
He nodded slowly.
Then he looked at Monica.
“You wrote this?””
She hesitated.
“Yes.””
Darren's fingers tightened around the envelope.
“Why?””
Monica's eyes filled with tears.
For the first time, she didn't look calculating.
She looked cornered.
“I was trying to make things right.””
“With what?””
She looked at me.
Then back at Darren.
“You don't understand what Arielle has been doing.””
I stepped forward.
“Then tell him.””
Monica's breathing became shallow.
Darren held up the envelope.
“I'm opening this.””
Monica suddenly lunged forward.
“Don't!””
Darren stopped.
The room went silent.
His eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
Monica stared at the envelope.
Then at me.
Then at Kayla, who had appeared silently behind her.
And Kayla whispered:
“Mom…”
Monica closed her eyes.
Darren slowly tore open the seal.
Something small and metallic slid toward the opening.
It dropped onto his palm.
A key.
And beneath it was a folded sheet of paper.
Darren unfolded it.
His eyes moved across the first line.
Then his entire expression changed.
He looked at me.
“Arielle…”
I stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Darren looked back at the paper.
His voice barely came out.
“It has your name on it.””
Then he turned the page over.
May you like
And underneath my name was another name.
One I had never expected to see.
