Chapter 4: The Name on the Paper
Darren stared at the second name as if the ink had physically struck him.
I stepped closer.
“Dad, whose name is that?””
He didn't answer.
Monica stood frozen in the doorway.
Kayla looked from her mother to the paper.
“Mom?””
Darren folded the page once.
Then again.
His jaw tightened.
“Everybody out.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“Out of the room.””
Monica's voice trembled.
“Darren, please.””
He pointed toward the hallway.
“I said out.””
Kayla grabbed Monica's arm.
“Come on.””
Monica didn't move.
Darren looked at her.
“Now.””
She finally stepped backward.
I stayed.
“Dad, I need to know.””
He looked at me.
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
His eyes dropped to the paper.
“It says your name.””
“I heard you.””
“And underneath it…”
He stopped.
My chest tightened.
“Underneath it what?””
Darren slowly unfolded the paper again.
The handwriting was neat and deliberate.
At the top was my full name.
*ARIELLE JAMES CARTER.*
Beneath it was another name.
*JORDAN ELLIS.*
I frowned.
“I don't know a Jordan Ellis.””
Darren looked away.
“You might.””
“What does that mean?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Arielle, when you were born, your mother and I…”
He stopped.
I stared at him.
“My mother and you what?””
Darren took a breath.
“We had an agreement.””
My stomach dropped.
“What agreement?””
Before he could answer, a loud knock came from the front door.
Everyone turned.
Monica whispered, “No.””
Darren looked toward the hallway.
“Who is that?””
The knock came again.
Three slow knocks.
Kayla appeared at the end of the hall.
“Mom?””
Monica looked terrified.
Not embarrassed.
Not angry.
Terrified.
Darren noticed.
He walked toward the front door.
Monica grabbed his arm.
“Don't open it.””
He looked down at her hand.
“Why?””
“Because you don't know who it is.””
Darren pulled the door open.
A Black man stood on the porch.
Late twenties.
Dark jacket.
Rainwater glistening on his shoulders.
He looked past Darren.
His eyes found me immediately.
Then he said my name.
“Arielle?””
I couldn't breathe.
Darren stepped in front of me.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at him.
“My name is Jordan Ellis.””
Behind me, Monica made a small sound.
Jordan's eyes moved toward her.
“You knew I'd come eventually.””
Darren's face hardened.
“You know my wife?””
Jordan gave a humorless smile.
“I knew her before she became your wife.””
Monica whispered, “Jordan, don't.””
Darren turned toward her.
“What's going on?””
Jordan reached into his jacket.
Darren immediately stiffened.
But Jordan only pulled out a folded photograph.
He held it toward me.
“Your mother gave me this twenty years ago.””
My fingers trembled as I took it.
The photograph showed a much younger Monica.
Standing beside a woman I recognized instantly.
My mother.
And between them was a baby.
Me.
I looked at Jordan.
“Why do you have this?””
He swallowed.
“Because your mother asked me to keep it safe.””
Darren stared at Monica.
“What did you do?””
Monica's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't have a choice.””
Jordan shook his head.
“You always had a choice.””
Darren's voice became dangerously quiet.
“Somebody better start talking.””
Jordan looked at me.
“Your mother was trying to leave Monica behind.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Monica knew something about your birth.””
My fingers tightened around the photograph.
“What?””
Jordan looked at Darren.
Then Monica.
Then back at me.
“She knew who your real father was.””
The room went silent.
Darren's face drained.
I stared at Monica.
“Dad is my real father.””
Jordan didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
Darren took one step backward.
“No.””
Monica whispered, “Darren…”
“No.””
His voice cracked.
He looked at me.
Then at Monica.
Then at Jordan.
“What are you saying?””
Jordan lowered his eyes.
“I’m saying the envelope wasn't meant to make you disappear.””
May you like
He looked directly at me.
“It was meant to make sure you never found out who you really are.””
