Chapter 13 - THE LAST LETTER

Three months passed.
The investigation continued.
Daniel Reed was convicted of financial crimes.
Helen faced charges for fraud, conspiracy, and identity theft.
Vanessa cooperated with investigators.
Thomas disappeared before trial.
But we knew he would eventually be found.
The family business was rebuilt.
Michael became involved in the foundation.
I took control of the Bennett estate.
Andrew stayed away.
He never pressured me.
He never asked for another chance.
Then Jonathan arrived one afternoon with an envelope.
“This came from your mother's attorney.”
I stared at it.
“Another letter?”
“Yes.”
I opened it.
My mother's handwriting appeared.
My darling Lily,
If you are reading this, then the people who tried to destroy our family have finally failed.
I smiled through tears.
But there is something I need you to understand.
Your inheritance was never meant to make you powerful.
It was meant to give you freedom.
I kept reading.
You may forgive people. You may not.
You may marry. You may remain alone.
You may keep the company or give it away.
The choice must always be yours.
Then came the final paragraph.
And if Michael finds you, tell him I loved him every day.
I cried.
Michael stood beside me.
I handed him the letter.
He read it silently.
Then he broke down.
For years, he had believed his mother abandoned him.
Now he knew she had spent her final years trying to bring him home.
He looked at me.
“She loved us.”
“Yes.”
“Both of us.”
“Yes.”
He hugged me.
And for the first time, I understood what my mother had been trying to accomplish.
She hadn't created a fortune.
May you like
She had created a bridge.
A bridge between two children separated by lies.
