Chapter 14 - THE WEDDING WE CHOSE

Six months later, I returned to the Napa chapel.

Not for a wedding.

For a charity ceremony.

The same chapel where Helen had publicly destroyed my marriage.

The same aisle.

The same white roses.

But everything felt different.

Michael stood beside me.

My father sat in the front row.

Andrew was there.

Quietly.

He looked at me when I entered.

There was sadness in his eyes.

But no expectation.

The foundation had purchased the chapel property and turned it into a community center.

Children played in the garden.

Families received assistance through the Bennett Foundation.

The place that had once been filled with humiliation was now filled with hope.

After the ceremony, Andrew approached me.

“I wanted to say something.”

I smiled.

“What?”

“I was wrong.”

I waited.

“I thought loving you meant believing you when it was easy.”

He looked down.

“Now I understand that love means standing beside someone when everyone else is telling you to walk away.”

I nodded.

“I hope you find someone who deserves you.”

He smiled sadly.

“I hope you find someone who doesn't need to be taught.”

I laughed softly.

“That's fair.”

He walked away.

And I didn't stop him.

Some people belong in your future.

Others belong in your lesson.

Andrew had become both.

Then my father approached.

“You look happy.”

“I am.”

“Are you sure?”

I looked around.

At Michael.

At the children.

At the foundation.

At the life I had built after the wedding that never happened.

“Yes.”

My father smiled.

“Your mother would be proud.”

May you like

I looked toward the chapel doors.

“I think she already knew.”
