Chapter 4 - HELEN'S FINAL MOVE

Helen was waiting at the Carter estate.
She sat in the library as though nothing had happened.
When I entered, she smiled.
“You came.”
I stood across from her.
“You destroyed my wedding.”
“No.”
“You brought another woman.”
“Yes.”
“You accused me of fraud.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Helen looked at me.
“Because I wanted you afraid.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You failed.”
She stood.
“You don't understand the power you're holding.”
“I understand enough.”
She walked toward me.
“Your mother stole everything from this family.”
“That's not true.”
“She took the company.”
“She built the company.”
“She manipulated my husband.”
“She protected herself.”
Helen's face twisted.
“You sound exactly like her.”
“Good.”
She stared.
“You think your attorney saved you?”
“No.”
“I think you exposed yourself.”
Her smile disappeared.
Jonathan entered behind me.
Police followed.
Helen looked shocked.
Jonathan raised the original recording.
“We have everything.”
Helen turned toward the officers.
“You can't arrest me.”
One officer stepped forward.
“You are being detained for fraud and identity theft.”
Helen looked at Andrew.
“Son.”
Andrew didn't move.
“Andrew.”
He finally spoke.
“I can't protect you.”
Her face collapsed.
“You're my son.”
“I know.”
“After everything I've done for you?”
“You destroyed my wedding.”
“I was protecting you.”
“You destroyed the woman I love.”
Helen looked at me.
“You'll never be happy with her.”
Andrew shook his head.
“You don't get to decide that anymore.”
The officers escorted Helen away.
Vanessa was arrested later that night.
But the investigation revealed something much larger.
Helen had been moving money from the trust for years.
Millions.
And the money had gone to a company controlled by Gregory Voss.
The same man connected to my mother's final investigation.
Jonathan looked at the records.
“There is one problem.”
May you like
“What?”
“Gregory is missing.”
