Chapter 1: Get Out

“Get out of my wedding!””

Vanessa’s voice cracked across the ballroom like a gunshot.

Every conversation died.

Beside the towering white wedding cake, the bride stood trembling in her sparkling silver gown, one jeweled hand pointed directly at Maya, the waitress standing barely three feet away.

Vanessa shoved Maya’s shoulder.

Maya stumbled half a step.

Then stopped.

She looked down at the hand that had pushed her.

Then back at Vanessa.

She didn’t apologize.

She didn’t retreat.

She simply tightened her grip around the smartphone hidden beside her service tray.

Marcus noticed.

“Vanessa,” he said, grabbing his bride’s arm.

“What are you doing?””

“Let go of me!””

“You just pushed her.””

“She’s been following me all night!””

Maya’s eyes stayed on Vanessa.

“No,” Maya said quietly.

“I’ve been waiting for you to stop lying.””

A murmur moved through the guests.

Marcus looked from one woman to the other.

His black tuxedo was still immaculate. His wedding ring was still new enough to catch the chandelier light whenever he moved his hand.

He had spent the last hour smiling for photographs, shaking hands, and believing this was the beginning of the rest of his life.

Now he couldn’t understand why the bride was screaming at a waitress.

Vanessa yanked her arm free.

“Marcus, she’s trying to ruin our wedding.””

Maya raised the phone.

“You should hear what she said first.””

Vanessa froze.

It lasted less than a second.

But Marcus saw it.

That tiny flicker in her eyes.

Fear.

Vanessa stepped toward Maya.

“What is that?””

“A phone.””

“Give it to me.””

Maya shook her head.

“Why?””

“Because you have no right to record me!””

“I didn’t record you.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

Marcus looked at Maya.

“Then what did you record?””

Maya turned the screen toward him.

“You should probably ask your wife.””

Vanessa lunged for the phone.

Marcus caught her wrist.

“Vanessa.””

“Marcus, please!””

“Why are you trying to take it?””

“Because she’s lying!””

Maya pressed one button.

A woman’s recorded voice filled the ballroom.

“Once I marry Marcus, the money is mine.””

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Marcus slowly turned toward Vanessa.

The color drained from her face.

“That’s your voice,” he said.

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Marcus stared at her as if he had never seen her before.

Maya lowered the phone.

“That was recorded three days ago.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus released her wrist.

“You said that?””

“I didn’t mean—”

“You said the money was yours.””

“It was a joke.””

“A joke?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Marcus, you know I love you.””

Maya gave a short, bitter laugh.

“Then why did you tell somebody you were marrying him for his money?””

Several guests looked away.

Others leaned closer.

Marcus swallowed.

“How much?””

Vanessa stared at him.

“How much what?””

“How much money were you planning to take?””

“I wasn’t planning to take anything.””

Maya stepped closer.

“You should keep listening.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Don’t.””

Maya lifted the phone again.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed for it.

Maya moved backward.

“Don’t touch me.””

“Give me that!””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Vanessa, stop.””

But Vanessa’s voice had already risen into a scream.

“You don’t understand!””

Maya stared at her.

“No. I understand perfectly.””

Vanessa’s tears spilled down her cheeks.

Then Maya pressed PLAY again.

And the ballroom heard another voice.

A man’s voice.

Low.

Calm.

And very close to Vanessa.

“You marry him, and everything changes.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

Maya looked directly at Marcus.

“That’s why I came over here.””

Marcus whispered, “Who is that?””

Maya’s thumb hovered over the screen.

But before she could answer, Vanessa lunged again.

This time, she wasn’t reaching for the phone.

May you like

She was reaching for Maya.

And the entire ballroom screamed.
