Chapter 8: The Envelope
Marcus stood beside the wedding cake.
The ballroom was silent enough to hear the soft hum of the air conditioning.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You know what's inside?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“I think I do.””
“Then tell me.””
“I can't.””
Marcus reached beneath the silver cake stand.
His fingers touched the black envelope.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Don't open it until we know where it came from.””
Marcus pulled it free.
There was no name on the front.
Only one sentence written in silver ink:
*THE TRUTH ABOUT VANESSA.*
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Maya whispered, “Open it.””
Marcus tore the envelope.
Photographs spilled onto the table.
The first showed Vanessa standing outside a courthouse.
The second showed Derek beside her.
The third showed Vanessa talking to another man.
Marcus picked it up.
“Who is this?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel took the photograph.
“I recognize him.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Who?””
“Calvin Reed.””
Rochelle frowned.
“Who is Calvin?””
Daniel's expression darkened.
“He was an accountant for the Davis Trust.””
Marcus stared.
“Was?””
“He was fired two years ago.””
“Why?””
“Fraud.””
Derek suddenly moved toward the envelope.
Marcus blocked him.
“Don't.””
Derek stopped.
“You don't understand what you're holding.””
“Then explain.””
Derek looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
Derek sighed.
“Calvin helped us create the transfer.””
Marcus's eyes hardened.
“So there were three of you.””
“Four.””
Everyone turned.
Maya said it.
“Four?””
Derek looked at her.
“You really did your homework.””
Maya held up her phone.
“I wasn't finished.””
She opened another video.
Calvin appeared on the screen.
He was sitting behind a desk, looking directly into the camera.
His voice was calm.
“If you're watching this, the transfer has already been triggered.””
Marcus leaned closer.
Calvin continued.
“Vanessa will tell you she didn't know about the forged signatures. She'll tell you Derek acted alone.””
Vanessa whispered, “No…”
Calvin's expression remained cold.
“She is lying.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Calvin continued.
“She planned it.””
Vanessa covered her face.
The video went on.
“She chose Marcus because his trust contains a clause that becomes active upon marriage.””
Daniel looked sharply at Marcus.
“What clause?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Daniel looked stunned.
Calvin continued.
“Once married, Marcus's spouse becomes a beneficiary.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You become a beneficiary?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Unless the marriage is annulled within a certain period.””
Marcus stared.
“What period?””
“Thirty days.””
Vanessa's face changed.
Daniel continued.
“But that's not the worst part.””
The ballroom waited.
Calvin leaned toward the camera.
“The trust contains a second clause.””
Marcus's breathing slowed.
“What clause?””
The video ended.
The screen went black.
Maya looked at Marcus.
“He never finished.””
Marcus slammed his hand onto the table.
“Why would he record that?””
Daniel picked up another document from the envelope.
“He left something behind.””
It was a legal amendment.
Marcus scanned it.
Then stopped.
“What's this?””
Daniel read it.
His face changed.
“This amendment was added yesterday.””
Marcus looked at him.
“By whom?””
Daniel turned the page.
The name at the bottom was impossible to miss.
*Vanessa Davis.*
Marcus stared.
“She signed it.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn't.””
“You're saying that's not your signature?””
“No.””
Daniel examined the page.
“The signature is legitimate.””
Vanessa's face went white.
Marcus looked at her.
“You signed it.””
“I didn't!””
“You just said it wasn't forged.””
“I don't remember signing that.””
Maya suddenly looked at the date.
“Marcus.””
He turned.
“What?””
Maya pointed.
“The amendment was filed at 11:47 last night.””
Marcus frowned.
“That was before the rehearsal dinner.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I was with Marcus.””
Derek looked away.
Marcus noticed.
“You know something.””
Derek said nothing.
Marcus grabbed his jacket.
“Tell me.””
Derek's voice was barely audible.
“She wasn't with you.””
Vanessa turned.
“Derek.””
“She left the rehearsal dinner.””
Marcus stared.
“When?””
“After midnight.””
“Where did she go?””
Derek swallowed.
“To meet Calvin.””
Daniel immediately pulled out his phone.
“I'll contact the bank.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I want the truth first.””
Maya stepped closer.
“Then we need to find Calvin.””
Marcus nodded.
“Where?””
Derek looked toward the ballroom doors.
“He was supposed to be here tonight.””
Marcus turned.
The doors were closed.
Then someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
A voice came from the other side.
“Marcus?””
Marcus recognized it.
Calvin.
Vanessa began shaking.
Marcus reached for the door.
Maya grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
Another knock.
Then Calvin spoke again.
“I know who forged the signatures.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Her eyes filled with terror.
Calvin continued:
May you like
“And I know why Vanessa chose you.””
The door handle began to turn.
