Chapter 9: The Real Target

The door opened.

Calvin Reed stepped into the ballroom.

He was a Black man in his late forties, wearing a dark blue suit and carrying a thin leather briefcase.

His eyes went immediately to Vanessa.

“You should have listened to me.””

Vanessa backed away.

“You weren't supposed to come.””

Calvin closed the door.

“Neither was Maya.””

Maya raised her phone.

“Funny. I was thinking the same thing about you.””

Calvin studied her.

“You're the waitress.””

“I am.””

“You found the recording.””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“Then you already know enough to be in danger.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Start talking.””

Calvin looked at him.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then stop believing everyone who says they love you.””

Marcus's expression tightened.

Calvin placed his briefcase on the table.

“I helped create the transfer documents.””

Derek looked away.

“I falsified records.””

Vanessa whispered, “Calvin…”

“And I made one mistake.””

Marcus asked, “What mistake?””

“I trusted Vanessa.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You knew what I was doing.””

“I knew what you told me.””

Calvin opened the briefcase.

“You said Marcus was the target.””

Marcus frowned.

“The target?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Calvin pulled out a stack of papers.

“You said his money was the only thing you wanted.””

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“Only thing?””

Calvin looked at him.

“That was the lie.””

Derek suddenly spoke.

“Calvin, don't.””

Calvin ignored him.

“She wasn't after your money.””

Marcus's face hardened.

“Then what did she want?””

Calvin placed a document on the table.

“Your trust.””

Marcus frowned.

“My trust owns investments.””

“It owns something much more valuable.””

Daniel picked up the document.

His eyes widened.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

Daniel looked at Calvin.

“This can't be right.””

Calvin nodded.

“It is.””

Marcus took the paper.

He read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

His face slowly changed.

“What is this?””

Calvin answered.

“A controlling interest in Davis Medical Holdings.””

Marcus stared.

“That company isn't part of my trust.””

“It is now.””

Daniel nodded reluctantly.

“The amendment.””

Marcus looked at him.

“The amendment she signed.””

“Yes.””

Calvin pointed to the signature.

“Once Vanessa became your legal spouse, that amendment transferred control of the holding company to the marital trust.””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“How much is that worth?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Several million dollars.””

Vanessa began crying.

Marcus looked at her.

“So that's it.””

“No.””

“You weren't after my bank account.””

“I loved you.””

“You wanted my company.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I needed it.””

“For what?””

She looked at Derek.

Derek stared at the floor.

Calvin answered.

“To pay off people she was afraid of.””

Marcus frowned.

“What people?””

Calvin opened another file.

Inside were photographs of Vanessa meeting different men.

Marcus flipped through them.

Then stopped.

One photograph showed Vanessa standing outside a warehouse.

Beside her was a man Marcus had never seen before.

On the back was a date.

And beneath it, a handwritten sentence:

*She promised them Marcus would never find out.*

Marcus looked up.

“Who are these people?””

Vanessa whispered, “I don't know.””

Calvin laughed.

“You know exactly who they are.””

Maya stepped forward.

“Why are you helping Marcus now?””

Calvin looked at her.

“Because I found out what Vanessa planned to do after the transfer.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Calvin hesitated.

“She wasn't going to leave with the money.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“Calvin.””

“She was going to make Marcus take the blame.””

Marcus stared.

“For what?””

Calvin's expression became grim.

“The fraud.””

Daniel went silent.

Marcus shook his head.

“Explain.””

Calvin opened his briefcase again.

“Every transfer was structured to look like Marcus authorized it.””

Marcus's face went pale.

“The signatures.””

“The emails.””

“The bank instructions.””

Calvin nodded.

“All of them would point to you.””

Derek whispered, “And then Vanessa would report you.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Report me for stealing my own money?””

“No.””

Calvin's voice was quiet.

“For stealing from the trust.””

Marcus suddenly understood.

He looked at Daniel.

“What would happen?””

Daniel's face was grim.

“If the evidence appeared authentic, you could face criminal charges.””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

“You were going to destroy my life.””

Vanessa collapsed into a chair.

“I didn't have a choice.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You always had a choice.””

Maya's phone buzzed.

She looked down.

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

Marcus stepped toward her.

“What is it?””

Maya turned the screen around.

A security alert had appeared.

*NEW USER AUTHORIZED: VANESSA DAVIS.*

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“That isn't possible.””

Daniel checked his own phone.

Then his face went white.

“It's happening.””

“What?””

“The transfer.””

Marcus stared.

“But you said it needed final authorization.””

Daniel shook his head.

“It does.””

“Then stop it.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked directly at Marcus.

“Because the final authorization isn't coming from Vanessa.””

The ballroom went silent.

Marcus whispered:

“Then who?””

Daniel turned his phone around.

The authorization screen showed a name.

*ELAINE DAVIS.*

Marcus looked at his mother.

Elaine shook her head.

“I didn't authorize anything.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Someone is using your credentials.””

Maya suddenly looked at the wedding cake.

Her expression changed.

“Wait.””

She walked toward it.

Marcus followed.

“What?””

Maya reached beneath the cake table and pulled out a small electronic device.

A tiny green light blinked.

Daniel stared.

“That’s a remote authentication device.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I've never seen that.””

Maya turned the device over.

There was a name engraved on the back.

Marcus read it.

His blood ran cold.

It wasn't Vanessa's name.

It wasn't Derek's.

It wasn't Calvin's.

It was his mother's.

Elaine whispered:

“That was stolen from my house.””

Marcus looked at the blinking light.

Then his phone buzzed again.

A new message appeared.

*TRANSFER COMPLETE.*

May you like

And beneath it:

*YOU HAVE 24 HOURS TO CONFESS.*
