Chapter 10: The Woman Behind It All

Marcus stared at the message.

*TRANSFER COMPLETE.*

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Elaine whispered, “Marcus…”

He looked at his mother.

“I didn't do this.””

“I know.””

Daniel was already typing furiously on his phone.

“I'm contacting the bank's fraud department.””

“Can they reverse it?””

“If we catch it quickly.””

Marcus looked at the clock above the ballroom entrance.

11:58 p.m.

The wedding had started less than three hours ago.

It felt like another lifetime.

Maya stepped toward the table.

“Wait.””

She pointed at the authentication device.

“The light.””

Daniel looked.

“It’s still transmitting.””

“So?””

“So whoever is controlling the transfer may still be connected.””

Daniel's expression changed.

He took the device from Maya.

“Everyone step back.””

A tiny sound came from it.

Beep.

Then another.

Beep.

Maya looked around the ballroom.

“Someone is receiving the signal.””

Marcus scanned the guests.

His eyes moved from face to face.

Black suits.

Silver dresses.

Confused relatives.

Friends.

Servers.

Photographers.

Then he noticed someone standing alone near the champagne table.

Elaine's sister.

Aunt Patricia.

Marcus frowned.

“Aunt Pat?””

Patricia looked up.

“Yes?””

“Why are you standing over there?””

She smiled nervously.

“I needed some air.””

Marcus looked at the ballroom doors.

Then at her.

“You haven't left the room all night.””

Patricia's smile disappeared.

Maya whispered, “Marcus.””

Patricia slowly reached into her purse.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Don't.””

Patricia stopped.

Marcus stared at her purse.

“What’s inside?””

“Nothing.””

“Show me.””

Patricia looked at Elaine.

Elaine's face changed.

“Patricia…”

Her sister slowly pulled out a second phone.

Marcus's stomach dropped.

The phone screen displayed the same transfer notification.

Daniel walked closer.

“Who owns that phone?””

Patricia didn't answer.

Maya did.

“Someone who wanted us to find it.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Maya took the phone.

The screen had no password.

One video file was open.

She pressed play.

Patricia appeared on the screen.

But the woman standing in the ballroom was not the Patricia in the video.

The recording showed her sitting at a desk, speaking directly to the camera.

“If Marcus is watching this, then Vanessa failed.””

Marcus stared.

Patricia closed her eyes.

The video continued.

“You were never supposed to be the target, Marcus.””

He looked at Patricia.

“Then who was?””

The woman on the screen smiled sadly.

“Your mother.””

Elaine went rigid.

Marcus turned toward her.

The video continued.

“Elaine Davis has controlled the family trust for twenty years. She knows where every dollar is. She also knows what happens when the trustees discover the missing funds.””

Daniel's face tightened.

Marcus looked at his mother.

“What missing funds?””

Elaine's eyes filled with tears.

“I can explain.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not again.””

Patricia began crying.

The video continued.

“Vanessa was hired to marry Marcus because she was the only person close enough to trigger the spouse clause.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa lowered her head.

“You were supposed to take the money,” the video said, “but that was only step one.””

Daniel whispered, “The fraud.””

Patricia nodded.

“Elaine had been moving money out of the trust for years.””

Elaine covered her mouth.

Marcus stared at her.

“No.””

“Marcus…”

“No.””

Elaine stepped toward him.

“I was trying to save the company.””

“By stealing from the trust?””

“It was temporary.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“How much?””

Elaine didn't answer.

Patricia did.

“Four point two million dollars.””

The room erupted.

Marcus stepped backward.

He looked at his mother.

“You stole four million dollars?””

“I borrowed it.””

“Without telling anyone?””

“I was going to replace it.””

“With what?””

Elaine's shoulders collapsed.

“I couldn't.””

Silence.

Vanessa suddenly began sobbing.

Marcus looked at her.

“And you knew?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I found out after we started dating.””

“So you blackmailed my mother?””

“No.””

Patricia interrupted.

“I did.””

Marcus looked at her.

Patricia wiped her face.

“I found the missing accounts. I confronted Elaine. She begged me for time.””

“Then what happened?””

“I realized I could fix everything.””

Maya shook her head.

“By destroying Marcus?””

Patricia looked at her.

“I thought if the trust transferred to Vanessa, the investigation would disappear.””

Daniel stared at her.

“That isn't how trusts work.””

“I know that now.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“So all of this was because you wanted to hide four million dollars?””

Patricia nodded.

“I was desperate.””

Marcus looked around the ballroom.

The flowers.

The cake.

The chandeliers.

The guests.

Everything his mother had helped build around him.

All of it had become part of a trap.

Then Maya stepped forward.

“There’s one problem.””

Everyone looked at her.

She held up her phone.

“Patricia didn't know I was recording.””

Patricia's face went pale.

Maya turned the screen toward Marcus.

A live audio recording was still running.

Patricia's confession had been captured.

Daniel exhaled.

“This is enough to establish intent.””

Patricia shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You're done.””

Patricia began crying.

“I never wanted you hurt.””

Marcus's voice was quiet.

“You already did.””

He turned toward Vanessa.

She stood alone beside the ruined wedding cake.

Her silver gown was stained with frosting.

Her tiara had slipped sideways.

She looked nothing like the woman who had walked down the aisle.

Marcus removed his wedding ring.

Vanessa stared at it.

“Marcus…”

He placed it on the table.

“You lied to me.””

“I know.””

“You used me.””

“I know.””

“And you helped people turn my wedding into a crime scene.””

Vanessa's tears fell.

“I loved you.””

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

“Maybe you did.””

She looked up.

“But love doesn't excuse what you chose.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Daniel's phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

His expression changed.

Marcus watched him.

“What?””

Daniel listened.

Then slowly smiled.

“The bank froze the receiving account.””

Marcus exhaled.

“All of it?””

“All of it.””

Maya smiled.

“Then it isn't gone.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not anymore.””

Marcus looked at Maya.

“You saved me.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

She glanced at the cake.

“You saved yourself when you decided to listen.””

Marcus smiled faintly.

Outside the ballroom, police sirens approached.

Patricia sat down.

Elaine began crying.

Derek lowered his head.

Vanessa stared at the ring on the table.

The ballroom doors opened.

Officers entered.

Marcus remained still.

For the first time that night, he wasn't confused.

He wasn't trying to defend his marriage.

He wasn't trying to protect a secret.

He simply watched the people who had betrayed him face the consequences of their choices.

Then Maya's phone buzzed one final time.

She looked at the screen.

Marcus noticed.

“What now?””

Maya smiled.

“Nothing.””

She showed him the message.

It was from an unknown number.

*YOU MISSED ONE PERSON.*

Marcus frowned.

Maya looked around the ballroom.

Then toward the wedding photographer.

The photographer was gone.

On the floor where his camera bag had been was a single photograph.

Marcus picked it up.

It showed him and Vanessa smiling at the altar.

But in the background, barely visible behind the guests, stood a man Marcus had never seen before.

On the back of the photograph were six words:

*He was watching before the wedding.*

Marcus looked at Maya.

She looked at him.

Neither spoke.

May you like

Because somewhere outside that ballroom, someone still had a reason to watch.

And this time, Marcus knew better than to trust a smile.
