Chapter 10: The Son My Father Chose

I read Vanessa's message again.

Then a third time.

Your father wasn't your biological father, Marcus.

The words seemed to move across the screen.

For thirty-five years, I'd believed I was Daniel and Evelyn Carter's only child.

I'd inherited my father's stubbornness, his love of old cars, and his habit of tapping his fingers whenever he was thinking.

I'd spent years hearing people say I had his eyes.

Now my wife was telling me that none of it was true.

I looked at Thomas.

"Is she lying?""

He lowered his head.

"I don't know what Vanessa knows.""

"Did my father know?""

Thomas nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did my mother?""

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

I called Vanessa.

She answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"Tell me she's lying.""

There was a long silence.

"Come home.""

"Answer me!""

"Not over the phone.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did my father know I wasn't his biological son?""

"Yes.""

"And my mother?""

"Yes.""

I felt something tighten in my chest.

"Who is my biological father?""

Vanessa started crying.

"I can't tell you that.""

"Why?""

"Because he's the reason Richard has been trying to get control of your inheritance.""

I looked at Daniel.

He had stopped writing.

"What does my biological father have to do with Richard Blackwood?""

Vanessa whispered something.

I couldn't hear it.

"What?""

"Your biological father was Richard Blackwood.""

The garage seemed to tilt.

I gripped the edge of the workbench.

Thomas stood up.

"That's not possible.""

Vanessa continued.

"Your mother had a relationship with Richard before she married your father. When she became pregnant, Richard disappeared.""

I couldn't breathe properly.

"My father knew?""

"Yes.""

"And he raised me anyway?""

"Yes.""

I ended the call.

For several seconds, I simply stood there.

My mother had kept this secret for thirty-five years.

My father had known.

Richard had known.

And Vanessa had known.

Everyone seemed to know who I was except me.

Daniel approached carefully.

"Marcus, we should not accept this as fact without documentation.""

I nodded.

But I couldn't stop thinking about the photograph.

My mother in a hospital bed.

My father standing beside her.

The man who had held me as a newborn, knowing I wasn't biologically his.

I looked at Thomas.

"Why did Dad never tell me?""

Thomas's eyes softened.

"Because he was your father, Marcus. He didn't believe blood made a family.""

I looked away.

Thomas continued.

"After your mother became pregnant, Richard refused to acknowledge the child. Your father knew the truth before he married Evelyn.""

I turned.

"Before they got married?""

Thomas nodded.

"He chose to raise you. He gave you his name. He made sure you never felt unwanted.""

My throat tightened.

"Then why did Richard suddenly come back?""

Thomas looked toward the garage entrance.

"Because your father left you more than money.""

"What?""

"Evidence.""

He took out another folded document.

It was a copy of an old correspondence between Richard and my father.

Richard had written:

If the boy is mine, I have a right to know what becomes of him.

My father had responded:

You gave up that right when you abandoned his mother. He is my son. Nothing you do will change that.

I read the sentence twice.

My eyes burned.

Thomas placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Your father loved you more than anything.""

I nodded.

I didn't trust myself to speak.

Daniel finally broke the silence.

"There's a legal issue we need to consider.""

I looked at him.

"Go on.""

"If Richard is your biological father, he may have information about the trust's original structure. But that doesn't automatically give him ownership of your inheritance.""

"Then why does he want it?""

Daniel pointed toward the notebook.

"Because your father may have created the trust using assets connected to Richard's investment company. We need to establish who contributed the money and who legally owns it.""

I looked at Thomas.

"Where is the original deed?""

He repeated the answer.

"Inside the grandfather clock at your mother's house.""

We left immediately.

When we arrived, my mother was sitting in the living room.

She looked at my face and began crying before I said a word.

"You know," I whispered.

She covered her mouth.

I placed the photograph on the coffee table.

"Was Richard Blackwood my biological father?""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Then she nodded.

I stepped backward.

"Why?""

She reached for my hand.

"Marcus, please.""

"Thirty-five years, Mom. Thirty-five years.""

"I was twenty-three. Your father and I were separated for a few months. Richard was someone I trusted.""

"And he left?""

She nodded.

"He said he wasn't ready to be a father. He told me to make other arrangements.""

I stared at her.

"Then Dad came back?""

"Your father found out I was pregnant. He knew the baby might not be his.""

"Why did he stay?""

My mother began sobbing.

"Because he said he loved us both.""

I sat down.

She continued.

"He told me that if the child was yours, he would raise him. He said he didn't need a blood test to know whether he wanted to be your father.""

I covered my face.

For years, I'd believed my father had simply been a good man.

Now I understood how extraordinary he had been.

"Did Richard ever contact you?""

"Once. When you were five. He wanted to see you.""

"Did you let him?""

"No. Your father refused.""

I looked at her.

"Then why did you keep his identity secret?""

"Because Richard threatened to take you. He said he could prove you were his son and that your father had no legal claim.""

I felt sick.

"And Vanessa?""

My mother's expression changed.

"She came to see me two years ago. She said she knew about Richard. She told me she wanted to help protect the family.""

I stared at her.

"She used that secret to get close to you?""

"I don't know, sweetheart.""

I stood and walked toward the grandfather clock.

It was an old oak clock my father had repaired himself.

I opened the back panel.

Behind the mechanism was a narrow compartment.

Inside lay a sealed envelope and a leather-bound document.

Daniel carefully removed both.

He opened the document.

The first page was the original Carter Family Property Trust.

The second page listed the beneficiaries.

The third contained my father's signature.

And the fourth contained a clause that made Daniel sit down.

"Marcus," he said quietly.

"What?""

"Your father didn't simply leave you an inheritance.""

He turned the document toward me.

The trust had been structured so that Richard would temporarily administer the assets until my twenty-fifth birthday.

But there was a condition.

If Richard attempted to use his biological relationship to claim ownership, or if he transferred assets without the beneficiary's consent, his authority would automatically terminate.

Daniel looked at me.

"Your father anticipated exactly what Richard might do.""

I stared at the document.

Then I noticed a handwritten note in the margin.

If Richard returns, tell Marcus the truth. He deserves to know who abandoned him and who stayed.

My eyes filled.

My father had known this day might come.

And he had left me a message.

I opened the sealed envelope.

Inside was a photograph of my father holding me as a baby.

On the back were six words.

*My son by choice. My son forever.*

I pressed the photograph against my chest.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed almost immediately.

"Yes. I understand.""

He ended the call.

"What happened?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at the original trust deed.

"Someone has filed an emergency application to remove you as beneficiary.""

"Who?""

He swallowed.

"Richard Blackwood.""

May you like

Then he added something worse.

"He claims you're not legally entitled to inherit anything because your father knew you weren't his biological child.""
