Chapter 13: The Recording That Changed Everything

I played the recording again.

"Once Daniel is gone, the boy's inheritance belongs to me.""

The words echoed through the room.

I couldn't move.

For twelve years, I'd believed my father died from complications related to an illness. I'd mourned him, buried him, and tried to build a life without him.

Now I was listening to a man discuss his death like a business transaction.

Vanessa stood beside the laptop, crying silently.

I turned toward her.

"Who is the other man?""

"I don't know.""

"You said you copied everything. You must know.""

"Richard called him Doctor Whitmore.""

Thomas had mentioned that name.

Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

The private physician Richard had arranged for my father.

I immediately called Daniel.

He answered on the second ring.

"Marcus?""

"You need to come over. Now.""

"What happened?""

I played him the recording over the phone.

He didn't interrupt.

When it ended, there was a long silence.

"Do not send that file to anyone," he finally said.

"Do not edit it. Do not upload it. Preserve the original device.""

"Does this prove Richard killed my father?""

"No. It gives us serious grounds for an investigation. We need authentication, the full recording, the original files, and independent medical and forensic review.""

"Then let's do it.""

"I'll be there in twenty minutes.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"You're coming with us.""

She nodded.

For once, she didn't argue.

Daniel arrived with Sophie and a digital evidence specialist he had arranged to meet us. They made forensic copies of the flash drive, documented its condition, and recorded exactly how Vanessa said she'd obtained it.

Daniel then asked her to explain everything from the beginning.

She sat at the dining table.

"Richard contacted me after I married Marcus," she began.

"He said he had known my father and that he wanted to settle some old business.""

"Did he mention the trust?"" Daniel asked.

"Yes. He said Daniel Carter had taken money from him. He showed me financial statements and said Marcus was entitled to inherit money that didn't belong to him.""

I stared at her.

"And you believed him?""

"At first.""

"At first?""

Vanessa looked down.

"He gave me copies of documents. He showed me the old guardian agreement. He said he had legal authority over the trust.""

Daniel asked, "When did you realize that wasn't true?""

"When I saw the original transfer instructions. The money was supposed to remain in a protected account. Richard wanted me to move it through Carter Legacy Trust Services.""

"Why?""

"He said it would make the ownership easier to change.""

Daniel wrote something down.

"Did you know the company was registered in your name?""

Vanessa nodded.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"You registered it?""

"Richard gave me the paperwork. He told me it was just an administrative company.""

"You were its director.""

"I know.""

"And you transferred the money.""

She began crying again.

"Yes.""

Daniel remained calm.

"Then we need to distinguish what you were told from what you actually did. You will need independent legal advice before making any formal statement.""

Vanessa nodded.

I stood and walked toward the window.

I wanted to hate her.

Part of me still did.

But the recording had changed the shape of the entire story. Richard hadn't merely taken advantage of her. He had recruited her, used her greed and fear, and turned her against the people who had trusted her.

That didn't erase what she'd done.

My mother still had missed appointments.

Her savings were still gone.

And Vanessa had still signed the refusal of treatment.

"Why did you cancel Mom's appointments?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked up.

"Richard told me the treatment would create a medical record that could interfere with the property application.""

I turned around.

"What?""

"He said if Evelyn became seriously ill, he could use her condition to argue that she couldn't manage the estate. But he didn't want her receiving treatment that might make her stronger or more capable of challenging him.""

My blood ran cold.

"You let my mother go without treatment because a businessman wanted her house?""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I thought I could fix it before you found out.""

"You had months.""

"I know.""

Daniel interrupted.

"Marcus, we need to focus on the immediate steps. Evelyn's treatment comes first. I'll contact the hospital and make sure her appointment is reinstated.""

He turned to Vanessa.

"Do you have any more evidence?""

She hesitated.

Then she nodded.

"There's a second recording.""

She opened her phone and searched through a folder.

"This one was made at Richard's office. I recorded it because I was afraid he would deny everything.""

She pressed play.

Richard's voice filled the room.

"Your job is simple, Vanessa. Keep Evelyn away from the lawyers. Keep Marcus occupied. And make sure the boy never sees the original trust documents.""

Vanessa's voice followed.

"What if he discovers the transfers?""

Richard laughed.

"Then we give him a reason to sign away his rights.""

"What reason?""

"His birth certificate. His father isn't his father. We can make him question everything Daniel built.""

I felt my hands clench.

Then Richard said something else.

"And if he refuses?""

A pause.

"Then we remind him what happened to Daniel Carter.""

The recording ended.

Daniel looked at me.

"That's important.""

"Because he admits it?""

"Because it shows intent to use the paternity issue as leverage. But again, we need authentication and context.""

I nodded.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

His expression changed.

"Are you certain?""

He ended the call.

"What?"" I asked.

"Dr. Samuel Whitmore has been located.""

"Where?""

"He's been living in a private retirement facility outside the city. Police investigators have already contacted him about your father's medical records.""

I felt my heart pound.

"Is he going to talk?""

Daniel looked at me.

"He has agreed to meet investigators.""

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

It was the hospital.

I answered immediately.

"Mr. Carter? This is the oncology department. We're calling about your mother, Evelyn.""

I stood.

"Is she all right?""

"She's stable. However, the specialist has reviewed her previous imaging and wants to see her urgently. We have an appointment available tomorrow morning.""

"Book it.""

"We will. There's one other issue.""

"What?""

"The medical refusal form in her file appears to have been signed by someone who was not authorized to make that decision.""

I looked at Vanessa.

The hospital employee continued.

"We've flagged the document for review. Your mother has the right to make her own treatment decisions, and we'll speak with her directly.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

My mother was finally going to receive the care she'd been denied.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"You heard that?""

She nodded.

"I'll pay for everything.""

"No.""

"Marcus—"

"You don't get to buy your way out of this.""

She lowered her head.

Daniel gathered the evidence.

"We have enough to approach the authorities with a formal complaint. We also need to secure the original trust deed and notify the court of the newly discovered material.""

Then his phone buzzed.

He read the message.

His face hardened.

"Richard has filed another application.""

"What now?""

Daniel turned the screen toward me.

Richard was asking the court to appoint an independent administrator over the trust.

But there was a second attachment.

A sworn statement from Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

It claimed my father had been mentally unstable, had repeatedly changed his medication without medical supervision, and had died from an accidental overdose.

I stared at the signature.

The doctor had apparently signed it that morning.

"He's still protecting Richard," I said.

Daniel nodded.

"Or Richard has something on him.""

I looked at the recording again.

"Then we need to find out what.""

My phone buzzed.

An unknown number.

One message.

*Your father didn't die because of the medication alone. Ask Thomas what happened at the garage that night.*

I looked at Daniel.

He read it over my shoulder.

"Call Thomas.""

I did.

No answer.

I tried again.

Still nothing.

Then an unfamiliar voice answered.

"Mr. Carter?""

"Who is this?""

"Officer Miller. We found Thomas Reed's vehicle abandoned near the old garage.""

My stomach dropped.

"Where is Thomas?""

There was a pause.

May you like

Then the officer said:

"We believe he's been taken.""
