Chapter 12: My Mother's Last Promise

My mother sat down slowly.

She looked older than she had the day before.

Her fingers trembled as she reached for the document.

"I never saw that agreement," she said.

I stared at her.

"Your signature is right there.""

"I know.""

"Then what did you sign?""

She took a deep breath.

"Richard brought a different document to the house. He said it was an authorization for your father's business records.""

I pulled out the chair opposite her.

"Mom, please explain.""

She looked toward the window.

"It was the week before your father died. He was in terrible pain. He was taking medication, and he could barely stand for more than a few minutes.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Richard came to the house and said your father needed me to sign something urgently.""

"What exactly?""

"He told me it was a temporary financial authorization. He said the bank needed my signature because your father couldn't attend the meeting.""

I looked at the document.

"And you signed this?""

"I signed the last page. He said the other pages were supporting information.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did you read the entire document?""

My mother shook her head.

"I trusted him.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

She began crying.

"Because he told me your father was dying.""

Silence.

She continued.

"He said if I didn't sign, the business would collapse. He said you would inherit nothing. He told me he was trying to protect you.""

I felt anger rising.

"Did Dad know?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you tell him afterward?""

She nodded.

"What did he say?""

My mother wiped her face.

"He became very angry. I'd never seen him like that before.""

I swallowed.

"Did he explain what you'd signed?""

"He said Richard had tricked me. He told me not to sign anything else.""

She reached for my hand.

"Then he made me promise something.""

"What?""

"That I would never let Richard use you to get what he wanted.""

I looked at the document again.

The agreement contained a clause transferring the estate if the debt wasn't repaid.

But there was something strange.

The signature date was February 14.

My father's death certificate listed his death as February 12.

I turned the paper toward Daniel.

"Look at this.""

He examined it.

Then he checked the date again.

"This agreement was supposedly signed two days after your father died.""

My mother stared.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel took photographs.

"That raises serious questions about the document's authenticity.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Where did you get this?""

She hesitated.

"Richard gave it to me.""

"When?""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Why?""

"He said he needed help settling the estate.""

"Did you believe him?""

"I thought the debt was real.""

"So you decided to help him take my mother's house?""

"No!""

She stood.

"I was trying to prevent the company from going after you.""

"By transferring two million dollars?""

"Richard said that would settle everything.""

Daniel interrupted.

"Did you receive any personal benefit from these transactions?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"No.""

I pointed toward her jewelry.

"Then what about the forty-eight thousand dollars?""

She looked down.

"I spent some of it.""

"On what?""

She began crying.

"Rent. Expenses. A few things I needed.""

"You used my mother's medical money to pay your personal expenses?""

"I was going to replace it!""

I looked away.

I couldn't keep having the same conversation.

Daniel closed his folder.

"We have enough to begin formal action. But I need to speak with the bank and the hospital directly.""

He stood.

"Marcus, I also recommend that your mother stay somewhere safe while we investigate.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"Mom can stay here.""

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

"Perhaps somewhere else would be better.""

I nodded.

"You're right.""

Vanessa's head snapped toward me.

"What does that mean?""

"It means Mom is leaving with me.""

"You can't just remove her from her home.""

I looked at her.

"This is my house.""

She went quiet.

My mother reached for my hand.

"I don't want to cause more trouble.""

I bent down.

"Mom, you are not the trouble.""

For the first time in days, she smiled.

Daniel left shortly afterward.

I helped Evelyn pack a small bag.

She insisted on taking her father's old photograph, her medication, and a framed picture of my father.

When we reached the front door, Vanessa stood in the hallway.

"Marcus.""

I stopped.

She looked exhausted.

"Can we talk?""

I glanced at my mother.

"Wait in the car, Mom.""

Evelyn nodded and walked outside.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"What?""

She held out a small envelope.

"I found this in Richard's office.""

I didn't take it immediately.

"Why were you in his office?""

"He asked me to retrieve some documents.""

"What documents?""

She swallowed.

"Your father's medical records.""

I felt cold.

"Why?""

"Because Richard wanted to prove that your father was mentally unfit when he created the trust.""

I stared at her.

"Was he?""

"No.""

"Then why?""

"Because if he could prove that, he could challenge the entire trust.""

I took the envelope.

Inside was a photocopy of a medical report.

My father's name.

His date of birth.

A diagnosis.

And a note from a physician.

*Patient shows no evidence of cognitive impairment. Fully oriented and capable of making independent financial decisions.*

I looked at Vanessa.

"Why would Richard want to hide this?""

She shook her head.

"Because it destroys his argument.""

I turned the page.

There was another document attached.

A payment record.

A transfer of $250,000 from Richard Blackwood to the physician's private clinic.

The date was one week before my father's death.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Did Richard pay the doctor?""

She nodded.

"For what?""

"I don't know.""

I stared at the record.

"You're telling me you found evidence that Richard paid my father's doctor, and you kept it?""

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

She looked toward the window.

"Of what he would do if I told you.""

I felt something shift.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear in her face.

Not fear of losing money.

Not fear of being exposed.

Fear of Richard.

"Vanessa, did he threaten you?""

She nodded.

"What did he say?""

Her voice dropped.

"He told me that if I ever betrayed him, he'd make sure I lost everything.""

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you come to me?""

She began crying.

"Because I was already involved.""

I waited.

Then she whispered:

"Marcus, I didn't just help Richard transfer your father's money.""

My chest tightened.

"What else did you do?""

She looked at the floor.

"I gave him access to your mother's medical records. I gave him the hospital's contact information. And I helped him obtain a copy of the original trust deed.""

I stepped backward.

"Why would he need my mother's medical records?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie to me.""

"I'm not.""

She took another breath.

"Richard said your mother was the only person who could invalidate the original agreement. He wanted to know whether she was medically capable of challenging the documents.""

I felt sick.

"He was investigating whether my mother was vulnerable enough to take her house.""

Vanessa nodded.

I turned toward the door.

Then she said something that made me stop.

"There's something worse.""

I looked back.

"Of course there is.""

She wiped her face.

"Richard didn't just want the house or the trust money.""

"What did he want?""

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"He wanted you to sign a document declaring that you voluntarily surrendered your inheritance.""

I stared at her.

"Why would I do that?""

"Because the document also contained a clause transferring your father's remaining assets to him permanently.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Did he prepare it?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you sign anything?""

She looked away.

"I signed as a witness.""

I stared at her.

Then I took out my phone.

"Daniel needs to know this.""

Vanessa suddenly grabbed my arm.

"Marcus, wait!""

I pulled away.

"What?""

She was crying uncontrollably now.

"I have the original document.""

"Where?""

"At Richard's office.""

I froze.

"How do you know?""

"Because he asked me to destroy it.""

I stared at her.

"And did you?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Why?""

For the first time, Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.

"Because I finally understood what he intended to do.""

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small flash drive.

"I copied everything before he could destroy it.""

I took the drive.

"What is on this?""

"Bank records. Medical correspondence. The original transfer instructions. And a recording.""

I looked at her.

"A recording of what?""

She swallowed.

"Richard talking to the doctor who treated your father.""

I felt my heartbeat accelerate.

"What's on it?""

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Then she said:

"Richard admits that he changed your father's medication.""

I stared at her.

My mother was waiting outside.

Daniel was already working on the financial investigation.

And now, after twelve years, we might finally have an answer to the question that had haunted me since childhood.

I inserted the flash drive into my laptop.

A single audio file appeared.

The date was February 11.

One day before my father's death.

I pressed PLAY.

At first, there was only static.

Then Richard's voice emerged.

"How long before the next dose takes effect?""

A second voice answered.

"That depends on the patient's condition.""

Richard spoke again.

"And if nobody asks questions?""

The second man hesitated.

Then he said something that made me stop breathing.

"Then nobody will know the difference between a medical complication and an intentional overdose.""

I froze.

The recording continued.

May you like

And Richard's next sentence revealed the real reason he had wanted my father dead.

*"Once Daniel is gone, the boy's inheritance belongs to me.""*
