Chapter 6: The Woman Who Emptied My Father's Account

I read the words three times.

Vanessa Carter.

My wife.

The woman who had promised to care for my mother.

The woman who had hidden medical letters, redirected hospital correspondence, and transferred forty-eight thousand dollars out of my mother's account.

She had also accessed my father's inheritance.

I looked at Daniel.

"Tell me that's a mistake.""

He shook his head.

"I can't tell you that yet.""

My mother sank onto an old wooden chair.

"How could she know about this?""

I turned toward her.

"Mom, did you ever tell Vanessa about the trust?""

"No.""

"Did she know about the blue toolbox?""

My mother nodded.

"She saw it when she visited the garage.""

Daniel examined the notebook.

"There's another possibility. The trust may have been registered through a financial institution that allowed a representative to make inquiries.""

I frowned.

"Can she access it without my permission?""

"Not if you're the sole beneficiary and the account was properly established. But if she obtained fraudulent authorization, that's a different matter.""

I stared at the notebook.

"How do we find out?""

Daniel closed the folder.

"We contact the bank and request the complete transaction history. We also preserve this notebook as evidence.""

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

"Where are you?"" she demanded.

"At the garage.""

Silence.

Then she said, "You shouldn't be there.""

I looked at the blue toolbox.

"Why?""

"Because you don't understand what you're looking at.""

"Then explain it.""

"Come home.""

"Not until you tell me what happened to my father's money.""

Her breathing changed.

"Marcus, this is complicated.""

"Two million dollars is not complicated. It's a number. Where did it go?""

She didn't answer.

I heard something being placed on a table.

Then she said, "I can explain everything if you come home alone.""

I glanced at Daniel.

"Why alone?""

"Because your lawyer doesn't know the whole story.""

Daniel raised his eyebrows.

I asked, "What story?""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Your father wasn't the man you think he was.""

My mother stood abruptly.

"Don't listen to her!""

I turned toward Evelyn.

Vanessa heard her.

"Your mother knows.""

"What does she know?""

But Vanessa ended the call.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Daniel finally spoke.

"She's trying to control the conversation. Don't let her.""

I nodded.

But I couldn't ignore one question.

What did Vanessa know about my father that my mother had never told me?

We returned home around noon.

Vanessa was waiting in the living room.

She wore a pale gray dress and had placed a large envelope on the coffee table.

There were no tears on her face.

No apology.

Only a carefully arranged expression of concern.

"Marcus," she said.

I walked past her.

"Where's the money?""

She pointed toward the envelope.

"Everything is in there.""

Daniel picked it up.

"May I?""

Vanessa nodded.

Inside were bank statements, company documents, and a photocopy of a trust agreement.

I watched Daniel turn the pages.

His expression became increasingly serious.

"Where did you get these?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"From the financial administrator.""

"Which administrator?""

"Someone who handled your father's affairs.""

"Name?""

She hesitated.

"Richard Blackwood.""

Daniel stopped turning the pages.

I felt the room grow cold.

"You're working with Blackwood?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not exactly.""

"Then why does he have my father's documents?""

"Because he was your father's business partner.""

My mother stepped forward.

"Your father never had a business partner.""

Vanessa gave her an impatient look.

"Not in the garage. In the investment company.""

My mother shook her head.

"You're lying.""

Vanessa opened the envelope and removed another photograph.

It showed my father standing beside Richard Blackwood.

This time, they were outside a modern office building.

My father was wearing a dark suit.

He looked younger, healthier, and almost unrecognizable.

I stared at the photograph.

"When was this taken?""

"Three months before he died.""

"Why didn't I know?""

"Because your father didn't want you involved.""

I turned toward her.

"Why?""

She took a breath.

"Because he was investigating financial fraud.""

Daniel looked up.

"What fraud?""

Vanessa sat down.

"Richard had been moving money out of the investment company. Your father discovered it. He confronted him, and they had a serious disagreement.""

My mother shook her head.

"Your father told me he was working late.""

"He was.""

Vanessa continued.

"He was gathering evidence.""

I stared at the photograph.

"And then he died.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Before he could expose Richard.""

A strange silence settled over the room.

I remembered my father in his final months.

The late-night phone calls.

The locked garage.

The way he sometimes looked over his shoulder before closing the curtains.

I'd thought it was the medication.

I'd thought he was frightened because he knew he was dying.

But perhaps there had been something else.

Daniel placed the photograph on the table.

"Even if that's true, it doesn't explain why you accessed the trust account.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"I didn't steal the money.""

"Then where is it?""

She opened her handbag and produced another document.

A transfer confirmation.

The money had been moved into a company account.

The company name was Blackwood Capital Holdings.

I stared at the page.

"You transferred my inheritance to the same company trying to take my mother's house?""

"I was protecting it.""

"From whom?""

"From Richard.""

I laughed bitterly.

"By giving him the money?""

"He promised to release the property claims.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Mrs. Carter, do you understand what you've just admitted?""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"I negotiated a settlement.""

"Without the beneficiary's consent.""

"I was acting on behalf of the family.""

I looked at her.

"You're not my mother's guardian. You're not my father's executor. And you're certainly not the owner of my inheritance.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Your father left debts, Marcus. You have no idea how much trouble he caused.""

My mother suddenly spoke.

"That's enough.""

Vanessa turned.

Evelyn was standing beside the fireplace.

Her face was pale, but her voice was steady.

"Stop blaming my husband.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"You're not helping.""

My mother stepped closer.

"Your father worked every day of his life to give Marcus a better future. He never stole from anyone.""

Vanessa stood.

"Then why did he leave all these problems?""

"Because someone betrayed him.""

For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate response.

I looked at her.

"How much did you transfer to Blackwood?""

She looked away.

"All of it.""

Daniel's pen stopped moving.

"All of what?""

Vanessa whispered:

"The trust account.""

I felt my legs weaken.

"How much?""

She finally looked at me.

"Two million, one hundred and forty thousand dollars.""

My mother's hand flew to her mouth.

Daniel slowly closed the folder.

"Marcus, we need to involve the authorities.""

Vanessa began shaking her head.

"No. You can't.""

I stared at her.

"You transferred more than two million dollars without my permission. What exactly do you think happens next?""

She stepped toward me.

"I can get it back.""

"How?""

"Richard promised—"

"Richard is the man who allegedly defrauded my father!""

"He has the original trust documents!""

I froze.

"What?""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel stood.

"What original documents?""

She looked at him, then at me.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.

Instead, she whispered:

"The trust was never supposed to belong to you.""

I stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out a final document.

It was an old legal agreement bearing my father's signature.

And beneath his name was another signature.

One that none of us had expected.

*Richard Blackwood.*

But it wasn't the signatures that made my mother collapse into the sofa.

It was the sentence written beneath them.

*Upon Marcus Carter's twenty-fifth birthday, ownership of the entire Carter estate shall transfer to the person named as his legal guardian.*

I looked at my mother.

Then at Vanessa.

"Who was my legal guardian?""

My mother began crying.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

And Daniel, after examining the document, quietly said:

"Marcus, according to this agreement, the person entitled to control your father's estate was never your mother.""

He turned the page.

"The legal guardian named here was Richard Blackwood.""

My father had left me an inheritance.

May you like

But someone else had been given the power to control it.

And that person had been standing behind my wife's decisions all along.
