Chapter 11: My Brother's Final Betrayal

Daniel didn't deny it.

That was what frightened me most.

He simply stood there, his hands hanging beside his body, while Rebecca's officers watched him.

"What does Sarah mean?"" I asked.

Daniel rubbed his face.

"Marcus, please.""

"Where is Grace?""

He looked toward the floor.

"Daniel!""

"She's alive.""

"Where?""

He swallowed.

"At the river property.""

I stepped closer.

"With Vanessa?""

He nodded.

I felt a surge of anger so intense that I had to stop myself from grabbing his shirt.

"You knew?""

"I knew where she was.""

"For how long?""

"Almost four years.""

I stared at him.

"You let me believe my daughter was dead?""

"I never said she was dead.""

"You let me believe she had been adopted!""

"Because Mom told me that was safer.""

"Safer for whom?""

Daniel began crying.

"For everyone.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You keep using that word. Safe. Protect.

Family. Do you even know what those words mean?""

He didn't answer.

Rebecca stepped between us.

"Daniel, you're coming with us.""

He nodded.

"I'll cooperate.""

As an officer approached, Daniel looked at me.

"There's something else.""

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

"What?""

"Vanessa isn't working alone. Ethan has been helping her move money. But the person who arranged the fake pregnancy, the forged documents, and the hospital transfers was Margaret.""

My mother's name hit me like a physical blow.

"Why?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Because she believed Robert would eventually give her control of the trust.""

"What trust?""

"The one established by Thomas Reed.""

I stared.

My biological father had left money for me.

And someone had been using my children to control it.

Daniel continued.

"Thomas left instructions that the money would be divided between his descendants. Robert was supposed to manage it until the youngest beneficiary turned eighteen.""

"How much?""

Daniel hesitated.

"More than six million dollars.""

I couldn't speak.

Six million.

That explained everything.

The fake pregnancy.

The insurance fraud.

The forged guardianship.

The children weren't just being hidden.

They were being treated like assets.

Rebecca ordered the officers to escort Daniel to a separate vehicle.

I didn't protest.

I couldn't look at him anymore.

We drove toward the river property with two police vehicles ahead of us.

The address led to an old two-story house surrounded by trees.

The building looked abandoned.

Its windows were dusty, and the front gate hung crookedly from one hinge.

But there was a fresh tire track in the mud.

Rebecca signaled for the officers to approach quietly.

I stood beside the police vehicle, staring at the house.

Somewhere inside was my daughter.

My four-year-old daughter.

I had imagined holding her thousands of times since learning about her existence.

I had imagined her running toward me.

I had imagined hearing her call me Daddy.

But I hadn't imagined finding her in a place like this.

A woman appeared at the upstairs window.

Vanessa.

She saw us.

Then she disappeared.

"Police!"" Rebecca shouted.

"Come outside with your hands visible!""

A window slammed.

Then we heard a child crying.

I ran toward the entrance.

Rebecca caught my arm.

"Marcus, wait.""

"That's my daughter!""

"We don't know what we're walking into.""

The front door suddenly opened.

Vanessa stepped outside.

She wasn't wearing the wedding dress anymore.

She had changed into jeans and a black sweater.

Her hair was tied back, and she looked exhausted.

"Where is Grace?"" I demanded.

Vanessa raised both hands.

"She's inside.""

"Bring her out.""

"Not until I speak to Marcus.""

Rebecca stepped forward.

"You can speak to him after we secure the property.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. I want him to hear this.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

She swallowed.

"Because your mother lied to you.""

I almost laughed.

"Which lie?""

Vanessa looked toward the house.

"Grace isn't Sarah's biological daughter.""

I felt the world tilt.

"What?""

"She was born using an embryo that belonged to someone else.""

I stared at her.

"You're lying.""

"Ask Helen Morris.""

Rebecca signaled for Vanessa to continue.

She took a breath.

"Sarah and you were trying to have another child. The fertility clinic made a mistake. Another couple's embryo was implanted during treatment.""

My hands began shaking.

"How do you know?""

"Because I worked at the clinic.""

I stared at her.

"You were involved?""

She nodded.

"I discovered the mistake. Robert paid me to keep quiet.""

I felt sick.

"Who are Grace's biological parents?""

Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.

"That's what Robert has been hiding.""

Rebecca moved toward the door.

"Where is the child?""

Vanessa pointed upstairs.

"Bedroom at the end of the hall.""

I pushed past her.

Inside, the house smelled of dust and old furniture.

I ran up the stairs.

At the end of the hallway was a small bedroom.

The door was open.

A little girl sat on the floor beside a stuffed rabbit.

She had dark brown hair and large green eyes.

She looked up when I entered.

"Are you Daddy?""

My throat closed.

I crouched.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

She studied my face.

Then she held up a drawing.

It showed a woman, a little girl, and a man standing beneath a yellow sun.

"Mommy said you would come.""

I began crying.

I reached out slowly.

She moved closer.

And when she wrapped her little arms around my neck, I felt four years of stolen time collapse into one moment.

"Hello, Grace," I whispered.

She touched my cheek.

"Why are you crying?""

"Because I've wanted to meet you for a very long time.""

She nodded seriously.

Then she whispered:

"Mommy said you have another little girl. Emma.""

"Yes.""

"Grandma said Emma isn't really your sister.""

I froze.

"Who told you that?""

"Grandma Margaret.""

Before I could ask more, Rebecca entered the room.

"Marcus, we need to leave.""

I picked Grace up.

"What's happening?""

"We found something downstairs.""

She held up a document.

It was an original fertility clinic record.

The names listed were not mine and Sarah's.

They belonged to Vanessa and Ethan.

I stared at the paper.

"What?""

Rebecca looked grave.

"The embryo transfer was performed using Vanessa's genetic material and an anonymous donor. The records were deliberately altered to make it appear that Sarah was the biological mother.""

I looked down at Grace.

Vanessa had been raising a child who was genetically hers.

But she had pretended to be pregnant with Marcus's child to hide the truth.

Then I noticed something else.

The document listed a second embryo.

A second transfer.

Another child.

The recipient's name was Margaret Cole.

My mother.

I felt my blood turn cold.

Rebecca looked at me.

"Marcus, your mother may have given birth to another child.""

I shook my head.

"That's impossible.""

Then a familiar voice came from the doorway.

"Not impossible, sweetheart.""

My mother stood there.

May you like

She was holding a photograph.

And beside her was a little boy.
