Chapter 3: Sarah's Last Secret

Dr. Helen Morris led me into the small office behind the church sanctuary.

Daniel followed us and closed the door.

For several seconds, Helen simply stood beside the desk, gripping the strap of her handbag.

She looked older than I remembered.

"Marcus," she said, "I am so sorry.""

I remained standing.

"Tell me why you sent that message.""

Helen opened her handbag and removed a cream-colored envelope.

My name was written across the front.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Sarah's.

My knees nearly gave way.

"Where did you get that?""

Helen placed it on the desk.

"Sarah gave it to me three weeks before she died. She asked me to keep it until I believed you were in danger.""

I stared at the envelope.

"Why didn't you give it to me four years ago?""

"Because she specifically asked me not to.""

"Why?""

Helen took a breath.

"She said you wouldn't believe what was inside. Not immediately. She wanted you to have time to recover from losing her.""

I looked at the handwriting again.

The letter was sealed.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a folded sheet of paper and a small photograph.

The photograph showed Sarah sitting in our living room, wearing a knitted blue cardigan.

Beside her stood Vanessa.

They were smiling.

I recognized the room.

I recognized the sofa.

But I had never seen the photograph before.

The date printed on the back was four months before Sarah died.

I looked up.

"How did Sarah know Vanessa?""

Helen pulled out a chair.

"Vanessa visited her several times.""

"Why?""

"Sarah was concerned about some financial documents. She had discovered that someone had been accessing information about your insurance policy.""

My eyes dropped to the letter.

I unfolded it.

Marcus, my love,

If you're reading this, I hope it means you've found someone who makes you smile again. I hope Lily is happy. I hope you have learned that surviving me is not the same as betraying me.

But there is something I couldn't tell you while I was alive.

Someone close to us has been using my illness to take money from our family.

I stopped reading.

Daniel moved closer.

"Keep going.""

The next paragraph was shorter.

I discovered the first withdrawal three months before my diagnosis. I thought it was a mistake. Then I found the second. The third was made while I was in the hospital.

I asked Vanessa to help me investigate because she was working with someone who had access to the accounts.

I felt my heartbeat in my throat.

Vanessa.

She had known Sarah.

Before Sarah died.

Before I ever met her.

I continued.

Marcus, please don't blame yourself. You trusted the people you loved. That is not a crime.

But if Vanessa ever tells you she is pregnant, please verify everything before making any financial decisions.

My hand froze.

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

Daniel leaned over my shoulder.

"She knew.""

Helen nodded slowly.

"Sarah suspected Vanessa might use a pregnancy to get access to the trust.""

I looked at her.

"How?""

"Sarah found a draft document requesting authority over the insurance funds. It was never completed while she was alive.""

I looked back at the letter.

There was one final paragraph.

There is one person who can explain everything. I wanted to tell you his name, but I couldn't bring myself to destroy your relationship with him without proof.

He knows where the original documents are.

Marcus, when the time comes, ask Daniel why he visited my hospital room the night before I died.

I stopped breathing.

The room became very still.

I looked at my brother.

Daniel's face had gone white.

"What?"" I whispered.

He didn't move.

"Daniel?""

He looked down at the floor.

Helen quietly stepped away from the desk.

I could hear the distant murmur of wedding guests through the walls.

My brother finally spoke.

"Sarah asked me to come to the hospital that night.""

"Why?""

He rubbed both hands over his face.

"She had found something.""

"What did she find?""

Daniel looked at Helen.

Then at me.

"She had a copy of a bank statement. She said someone had been moving money out of the insurance account before the payout was even finalized.""

I shook my head.

"That wasn't possible. The policy wasn't paid until after she died.""

"I know.""

"Then what money?""

"Your savings, Marcus. The joint account. The account you thought was being used for household expenses.""

I felt sick.

"How much?""

Daniel hesitated.

"About sixty thousand dollars.""

I gripped the back of the chair.

"Who took it?""

He closed his eyes.

"Sarah didn't know. But she suspected someone had been using your credentials.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I found the original transfer request.""

"Who signed it?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Your name.""

I shook my head.

"I didn't sign anything.""

"I know that now.""

"Then what did you do?""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I confronted Sarah about it. She told me not to say anything until she had more proof.""

"And?""

"And she made me promise to protect Lily if something happened to her.""

I stared at him.

"That's not an answer.""

Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out a small key.

"I took this from her bedside drawer after she died.""

I looked at the key.

It was old, brass-colored, with a small number engraved near the base.

"What's it for?""

"Her safety deposit box.""

I frowned.

"Sarah never told me she had one.""

"She opened it before her diagnosis.""

"What's inside?""

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Everything she found.""

Helen looked toward the door.

"There's something else you need to know.""

I turned.

She was holding a second photograph.

This one showed Sarah sitting in a hospital bed.

A man stood beside her.

I recognized his face.

Ethan.

He was younger in the picture, but unmistakably Vanessa's brother.

I stared at it.

"Why was he visiting my wife?""

Helen looked uncomfortable.

"Sarah told me he had offered to help manage some financial arrangements while you were working.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"He was handling our money?""

"Apparently.""

I took the photograph.

On the back, Sarah had written three words.

He brought her.

I looked at Helen.

"Who?""

Before she could answer, Daniel's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed immediately.

"Marcus, don't answer any calls from Vanessa.""

"Why?""

Daniel turned the phone toward me.

A message had just arrived from our mother.

*Lily is missing. Vanessa told the security guard she was taking her to the restroom. They haven't come back.*

My body went cold.

"What?""

Daniel was already moving toward the door.

I followed him.

We ran through the church hallway, past the bridal preparation room, past the kitchen, and into the parking lot.

My mother's car was still there.

So was Vanessa's.

But Lily was nowhere.

I called her name.

Nothing.

Then I saw the security guard standing near the side entrance, looking confused.

"Where did Vanessa go?"" I demanded.

He pointed toward the street.

"She left about two minutes ago. She said you had asked her to take the little girl to your hotel.""

"Did she have Lily?""

He nodded.

I nearly collapsed.

Daniel grabbed my shoulder.

"Call the police.""

I was already dialing.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message.

This time, it came from Vanessa's number.

There was a photograph attached.

Lily was sitting in the back seat of a car, still wearing her flower-girl dress. Her cheeks were wet, and she was holding her stuffed rabbit.

Beneath the picture was a message.

*If you want your daughter back, stop asking questions about Sarah.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

*And bring the original insurance documents. You have one hour.*

I looked at Daniel.

He had read it over my shoulder.

"She's using Lily as leverage," he said.

I couldn't speak.

My daughter had already lost her mother once.

I would not let her lose her father, too.

I called the police and gave them Vanessa's description, the vehicle details, and the photograph. Then I called my mother and told her to stay inside the church with the officers.

But as Daniel and I rushed toward his car, Helen called after us.

"Marcus!""

I turned.

She was holding Sarah's letter again.

"There is one more page.""

I stopped.

"What?""

Helen unfolded a thin sheet that had been tucked inside the envelope.

It was a copy of an old document.

A hospital visitor record.

Sarah's final night.

Three names were listed.

Daniel.

Ethan.

And a third person.

I looked at the name.

My hands began to shake.

It belonged to someone I had trusted with my daughter's life.

Someone who had been at our wedding.

May you like

Someone who had been standing in the front row when the fake pregnancy belly fell.

*My mother.*
