Chapter 12: The Son Nobody Knew About

I stared at the boy.

He looked about five years old.

He had dark hair, brown eyes, and a small scar above his right eyebrow.

My mother held his hand.

For a moment, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.

Then she smiled sadly.

"His name is Oliver.""

I looked at the child.

Then at her.

"Who is he?""

My mother lowered her eyes.

"Your brother.""

The words echoed through the room.

Daniel, who had just entered with two officers, stopped dead.

"What?""

My mother looked at him.

"Robert and I had another child.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No. That's not possible.""

"After your father disappeared, I found out I was pregnant.""

I stared at her.

"You told everyone Dad was dead.""

"He was supposed to be.""

"Then whose child is Oliver?""

My mother hesitated.

"Robert's.""

I felt sick.

The man who had faked his death had fathered another child with my mother while the rest of us believed he was buried.

But something still didn't make sense.

"Why was his name on Sarah's medical records?""

My mother looked toward the document in Rebecca's hand.

Then she sighed.

"Because Oliver was the reason Robert needed control of the trust.""

I looked down at Grace.

She was playing with the button on my jacket.

I wanted to get her away from this house.

Away from every lie.

But I couldn't leave without understanding what had happened.

"Explain everything," I said.

My mother sat in the chair near the window.

"I was twenty-three when I married Robert. I loved him. At least, I thought I did.

When Thomas died, Robert told me he would take care of everything. He said he would protect the family.""

"Thomas was my biological father.""

She nodded.

"Yes. Thomas was a good man. He trusted Robert too much.""

"What happened to him?""

My mother began crying.

"Robert arranged the accident. Thomas had discovered that money was being diverted from the company.""

Rebecca stepped forward.

"Are you admitting Robert arranged his death?""

My mother nodded.

"I saw the documents. I helped him hide them.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Mom, why?""

"Because I was afraid.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone was afraid. Meanwhile, I was burying people who weren't dead and mourning children who were still alive.""

She looked at me.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

I pointed toward Grace.

"Look at her. She's four years old. She doesn't know why her father wasn't there. She doesn't know why everyone kept telling her different stories.""

My mother began sobbing.

"I wanted to tell you.""

"When?""

She didn't answer.

Rebecca took out her handcuffs.

"Margaret Cole, you're under arrest pending investigation into fraud, unlawful guardianship, and conspiracy.""

My mother didn't resist.

But before Rebecca could lead her away, she reached into her handbag.

She removed a small envelope.

"Marcus, there's something you need to read.""

I didn't take it.

"What now?""

"It's from Sarah.""

My chest tightened.

"Where did you get it?""

"She gave it to me before she disappeared.""

I took the envelope.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Inside was a single page.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally begun to surface.

I know you are angry. I know you will wonder why I allowed you to believe I was gone.

But there is something you must understand.

Grace is our daughter in every way that matters. Her biological origins do not change the love we had for her before she was born.

I carried her. I held her. I sang to her.

And I will never apologize for loving her.

I stopped reading.

Tears blurred the page.

The letter continued.

But Emma is different.

She is connected to Thomas's estate in a way that Robert cannot allow anyone to discover.

The original trust names three children, not two.

You, Emma, and a third beneficiary whose identity I never learned.

I looked up.

Three children.

My father had told me there were twins.

Vanessa had told me Grace was not biologically Sarah's.

My mother had just revealed Oliver.

Who was the third beneficiary?

I continued reading.

Marcus, please find the original trust agreement. It is hidden in the blue box. Do not let Robert or Margaret get to it first.

And whatever happens, never let anyone separate the children again.

The letter ended.

I looked toward my mother.

"Where is the blue box?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie.""

"I'm not.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"I know where it is.""

I turned toward him.

He looked exhausted.

"Sarah told me about it before she died. I thought it was a safety deposit box, but it isn't.""

"Where?""

"Your father's old house. The house where you grew up.""

My childhood home.

The property had been sold after my father's supposed death, but the basement storage room had remained sealed.

I looked at Rebecca.

"We need to go there.""

She nodded.

But before anyone could move, a police officer rushed into the room.

"Detective, we have a situation.""

Rebecca turned.

"What?""

"Robert Cole has escaped custody.""

My blood ran cold.

"How?""

The officer looked toward the floor.

"An ambulance arrived claiming he had suffered a medical emergency. The crew had valid identification and transfer paperwork.""

Rebecca swore.

"Where is the ambulance now?""

"Unknown.""

I looked toward my mother.

She was crying harder.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Robert.

*You have Grace. Margaret has Oliver. Vanessa has been useful. But you still don't understand what Sarah did.*

A second message arrived.

It contained a photograph.

Sarah was sitting in a hospital bed, holding a newborn baby.

But there was something strange about the photograph.

The baby had a hospital bracelet.

And the name printed on it wasn't Emma.

It wasn't Grace.

It wasn't Oliver.

It was *Marcus Thomas Reed Jr.*

I stared at the screen.

My mother whispered something.

"That's impossible.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

She looked at the photograph, then covered her mouth.

"Robert told me that baby died.""

Rebecca took the phone.

"Who is this child?""

My mother began shaking.

"Your father had a son before he married me.""

I stared.

"Another brother?""

She nodded.

"But he wasn't supposed to exist.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Why?""

My mother raised her eyes toward me.

"Because he was Thomas's child.""

I felt the floor disappear beneath my feet.

My biological father had another son.

A son whose existence had been hidden.

A son Sarah had apparently known about.

And now Robert had sent me a photograph of that baby.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, there was a voice recording.

I pressed play.

Sarah's voice filled the room.

"Marcus, if you've found this recording, then Robert has probably told you about the third child.""

She paused.

Then whispered:

"But there's one thing he doesn't know.""

A door slammed somewhere in the background of the recording.

Sarah continued.

"The third child isn't your brother.""

I stopped breathing.

"It's your son.""

The recording ended.

I looked down at the photograph.

The baby had been born four years ago.

The same year Sarah supposedly died.

And beneath the photograph, Robert had written one final sentence.

*Ask Vanessa who the real father of her fake baby was supposed to be.*
