Chapter 1: The Woman Who Wanted My Empire

“Sign the papers,” Selena whispered.

“Or let go.””

For three seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

I stood behind the tall garden wall of my estate, my hand still wrapped around the handle of my suitcase, listening to the woman I once trusted more than anyone in the world threaten my mother’s life.

The sound of water dripping from my mother’s trembling fingers echoed across the marble pool deck.

She was barely holding on.

Her silver hair was soaked. Her expensive blue dress floated around her like a broken flower. Her eyes were filled with fear—not the fear of falling.

The fear of betrayal.

And standing above her, wearing a white silk dress and a diamond necklace I had bought for her birthday, was Selena.

My mistress.

The woman I had secretly loved for two years.

The woman I thought would become my second chance at happiness.

She looked down at my mother and smiled.

Not a nervous smile.

Not a desperate smile.

A cold, calculated smile.

“Your son is not here to save you, Eleanor,” Selena said.

“He’s too busy believing everyone around him loves him.””

My mother’s lips trembled.

“Selena… please,” she whispered.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Selena laughed softly.

“Oh, I understand perfectly.””

She pulled a folder from the table beside the pool and held it above my mother’s face.

“These documents transfer control of the charity foundation to me. Your son won’t notice a thing until it’s too late.””

My fingers tightened around my suitcase.

The charity foundation.

My father built it before he died. After his death, my mother and I spent years turning it into the largest privately funded medical foundation in the country.

It wasn’t just money.

It was his legacy.

And Selena wanted it.

“Why?”” my mother asked weakly.

That question hurt more than anything.

Because I had asked myself the same thing.

Why would someone who held my hand through my father’s funeral betray the family that welcomed her?

Why would someone who kissed me goodbye every morning do this?

Selena crouched beside the pool edge.

“Because your son made the mistake of thinking money makes people loyal.””

She leaned closer.

“He built an empire but forgot one simple rule.””

My mother looked up at her.

“What rule?””

Selena smiled.

“Everyone has a price.””

The words cut through me.

I had spent my entire adult life believing I could recognize greed. I was the CEO of one of the fastest-growing technology companies in America. I negotiated million-dollar deals. I read contracts line by line.

But I never read Selena.

Because I wasn’t looking for a threat.

I was looking for love.

Six hours earlier, I had been in New York, sitting across from investors who wanted me to delay my return home.

They thought I was staying another week.

Everyone did.

That was why I came back early.

I wanted to surprise my mother for her birthday.

I wanted to surprise Selena.

Instead, I found out I was the one being surprised.

I stepped away from the wall.

The gravel beneath my shoes cracked.

Selena froze.

Slowly, she turned around.

The color drained from her face.

“Adrian…”

My mother’s eyes widened.

“Adrian!””

I walked toward the pool, my expression calm even though every part of me was screaming.

“Let her go.””

Selena stared at me.

For the first time since I met her, she looked afraid.

“You weren’t supposed to be home.””

I stopped a few feet away.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“That was the problem.””

My mother’s grip weakened.

I immediately reached toward her.

“Mom, hold on. I’ve got you.””

She nodded, tears running down her face.

Selena stepped backward.

“Adrian, wait. You don’t understand.””

I looked at her.

“I heard everything.””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

“I heard you threaten my mother.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“I heard you say she would never know her son was not the real target.””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

I saw it.

The panic.

The realization that she had revealed too much.

“What did you mean by that?”” I asked.

Silence.

The wind moved through the garden trees.

The entire estate felt frozen.

My mother looked between us.

“Adrian… what is she talking about?””

I ignored Selena.

“What did you mean, Selena?””

She looked away.

“Nothing.””

“Nothing?””

I took one step closer.

“You pushed my mother into a pool for nothing?””

Her eyes flashed with anger.

“You think this is about your mother?””

That sentence made my blood run cold.

Selena grabbed the folder from the table and hugged it against her chest.

“You really are blind.””

“Explain.””

She laughed.

A bitter, ugly laugh I had never heard before.

“You still think you’re the center of this story.””

My mother finally reached the edge. I grabbed her arms and pulled her out of the water.

She collapsed against me, shaking.

I removed my jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.

Selena watched us.

And instead of apologizing, she looked irritated.

That was when I knew.

The woman standing in front of me was not someone who had made a terrible mistake.

She was someone whose plan had failed.

“Security!”” I shouted.

Two guards ran from the main house.

Selena lifted her chin.

“Careful, Adrian.””

I looked at her.

“You’re the one who should be careful.””

She smiled.

A small, confident smile.

“You still don’t know what I found.””

The guards stopped beside me.

“What is she talking about?”” I asked.

Selena walked toward the edge of the garden path.

“She knows.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Selena looked at my mother.

Then back at me.

“Your mother knows why your father really died.””

The world seemed to stop.

My father had died twelve years ago in a car accident.

At least, that was what everyone told me.

My mother went completely still.

Her face lost all color.

“Selena,” she whispered.

But Selena was already walking away.

I turned to my mother.

“Mom?””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom, what did she mean?””

My mother stared at the ground.

The same woman who had faced business rivals, lawsuits, and impossible grief without breaking was suddenly unable to meet my eyes.

“Adrian…”

Her voice cracked.

“I wanted to tell you.””

A cold feeling spread through my chest.

“Tell me what?””

Before she could answer, one of the guards interrupted.

“Mr. Vale.””

I looked over.

The guard held something in his hand.

“A phone was found near the pool.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Selena’s?””

He shook his head.

“No, sir.””

He handed it to me.

The screen was still on.

There was an unfinished recording.

My thumb hovered over the play button.

Then I pressed it.

At first, I heard Selena’s voice.

“You’re sure he doesn’t know?””

A man answered.

“He believes the accident story.””

My heart stopped.

That voice.

I knew that voice.

The recording continued.

“He thinks his father died because of bad luck. He has no idea the person closest to him was the one who caused it.””

I stared at the phone.

My hands went numb.

Then the man spoke again.

And this time, I knew exactly who it was.

“Once Adrian signs the company transfer, we’ll finally own everything his father left behind.””

I looked at my mother.

She was crying silently.

Because she knew.

And then the voice on the recording said the name of the person who had been helping Selena all along.

May you like

A name I never expected to hear.

My own.
