Chapter 5: The Woman Who Hid the Truth
For one second, nobody moved.
The smoke alarm screamed above us.
The mansion lights flashed red and white.
My mother stood frozen beside me, her face drained of all color.
And Selena’s words hung in the air like a weapon.
“The reason your father disappeared…”
She looked directly at me.
“…was because your mother betrayed him.””
I wanted to laugh.
I wanted to tell her she was lying.
Because lies were what Selena did.
She manipulated people.
She threatened my mother.
She pushed an innocent woman into a pool.
But then I looked at my mother.
And she didn’t look angry.
She didn’t look shocked.
She looked broken.
“Mom?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Adrian…”
That was enough.
A tiny crack appeared in the wall I had built around myself.
The wall that said my mother was innocent.
The wall that said my family had been destroyed by outsiders.
Because deep down, I knew.
People don’t look that guilty when they’re falsely accused.
They look like they’re remembering something they desperately wanted to forget.
Selena took one step closer.
“Ask her.””
I stared at her.
“Ask her what?””
“The truth.””
Marcus suddenly stepped between us.
“Enough.””
Selena looked at him.
“Still protecting her?””
His expression darkened.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Selena laughed.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
The smoke was getting thicker.
I could barely see the hallway.
But I couldn’t leave.
Not now.
Not with twelve years of lies standing in front of me.
I looked at my mother.
“Tell me she’s lying.””
Silence.
My mother closed her eyes.
And that silence destroyed me more than any confession could have.
“Mom.””
She whispered:
“I never wanted you to know this.””
My chest tightened.
“Know what?””
She looked at Selena.
Then Marcus.
Then finally me.
“The night your father disappeared…”
Her voice shook.
“I was the last person he spoke to.””
The room seemed to stop.
I stared at her.
“What?””
My mother wiped her face.
“He called me from the road.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew someone was following him.””
My fingers curled into fists.
“And what did you do?””
She looked down.
“I told him to come home.””
“That’s it?””
“No.””
Her voice became smaller.
“I told him I needed to talk to him.””
“About what?””
She couldn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
“I knew about the money.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“What money?””
“The money Marcus was accused of stealing.””
I looked at Marcus.
He didn’t move.
My mother continued.
“Your father thought Marcus was responsible. He believed he was the only person who had access.””
“And he wasn’t?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
My heart sank.
“Then who was?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Even Selena stopped smiling.
I stared at my mother.
My own mother.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who sat beside my bed when I was sick.
The woman who told me honesty mattered more than money.
“You stole from my father?””
“No.””
Her answer came quickly.
“I didn’t steal anything.””
“Then what are you saying?””
She took a deep breath.
“I moved the money.””
“Why?””
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does when you know the truth.””
She looked toward Marcus.
“Your father’s company was not just being attacked from the outside.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Someone inside was planning a takeover.””
I looked at him.
“And you knew?””
“I knew there were threats.””
“But not who was behind them?””
He shook his head.
My mother continued.
“Your father found out someone was trying to use company funds to create a fake financial crisis.””
“So you moved the money?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“To a private account.””
I looked at Selena.
“The account.””
She smiled slightly.
“Yes.””
My mother’s face tightened.
“The account was created to protect the company if something happened.””
“Then why did everyone think you betrayed him?””
“Because your father thought I was hiding something.””
“And were you?””
She looked away.
“Yes.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“I didn’t tell him where I moved the money.””
“Why?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of who he trusted.””
I frowned.
“My father trusted you.””
“I know.””
“No, I mean who else?””
She hesitated.
Then she looked at Selena.
I followed her eyes.
And Selena’s smile disappeared.
“You knew,” I said.
Selena crossed her arms.
“I knew pieces.””
“What pieces?””
“That your father discovered the truth too late.””
“Which truth?””
She looked at Marcus.
“Ask him.””
I turned.
Marcus looked exhausted.
“Adrian…”
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“I’m done hearing half-truths.””
I pointed toward him.
“You knew my father was alive.””
He said nothing.
“You knew about the account.””
Silence.
“You knew Selena.””
A pause.
“And now I find out my mother was hiding money from my father.””
I stepped closer.
“So tell me.””
My voice lowered.
“Who destroyed my family?””
Marcus looked at me.
Then he said:
“Your father did.””
The words made no sense.
“What?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Thomas created this entire situation.””
My mother looked horrified.
“Marcus, don’t.””
“I have spent twelve years protecting his son from the truth.””
He looked at me.
“But you deserve to know.””
The smoke was clearing slightly.
Emergency lights continued flashing.
Marcus reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this two days ago.””
He handed it to me.
My name was written on the front.
Adrian.
In my father’s handwriting.
I stared at it.
“Where did you get this?””
“From the old Vale estate.””
The same place where my father’s call had been traced.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
One page.
My father’s handwriting.
*Adrian,*
*If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you away from the truth.*
My breathing stopped.
I continued.
*There are people who will tell you I abandoned you. They will tell you your mother betrayed me. They will tell you Marcus was my enemy.*
*None of them are completely wrong.*
I swallowed.
The next line made my heart race.
*But none of them know the real reason I disappeared.*
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
I read the final paragraph.
*The person who destroyed our family was not someone outside it. It was someone I loved. Someone I trusted with my life.*
My hands went cold.
Then I reached the last sentence.
*Adrian, if you want the truth, find the person who has been pretending to be me for twelve years.*
I lowered the letter.
“Pretending to be you?””
Marcus looked away.
My mother covered her mouth.
Selena whispered:
“He finally told you.””
I looked at her.
“Told me what?””
She stepped forward.
“The man you think is your father…”
A slow smile appeared.
“…is not the man who called you tonight.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What did you say?””
Selena reached into her bag and pulled out her phone.
She tapped the screen.
Then she showed me a photograph.
A photograph taken recently.
A photograph of my father.
Older.
Alive.
Standing beside a person I recognized immediately.
A person who had been in my house moments ago.
A person who had been helping us.
I looked at Marcus.
Then back at the picture.
Because standing beside my father was the one person I never suspected.
My mother.
But she wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t afraid.
She was smiling.
And beneath the photograph was a date.
May you like
The date was three years ago.
The day my mother told me she received the letter saying my father was alive.
