Chapter 9: The Choice That Was Never Mine

*You have ten minutes.*

Those four words burned into my mind.

I stared at the black screen on Daniel’s phone.

My father.

My mother.

Both alive.

Both trapped.

And Daniel standing in front of me like he had already won.

The man who had spent twelve years hiding behind our family’s pain.

The man who had watched me build an empire using the ruins he created.

“Where are they?””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

Daniel smiled.

“That’s the wrong question.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The right question is why you still believe you can save everyone.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Daniel.””

Daniel glanced at him.

“Still protecting him?””

Marcus’s fists tightened.

“You destroyed everything.””

“No.””

Daniel smiled.

“Your father did.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Stop saying that.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Why? Because it hurts?””

He stepped closer.

“Your father was brilliant. But brilliant people have one weakness.””

“What?””

“They think they can control everything.””

The room felt colder.

Daniel continued.

“He built a company. He built a fortune. He built a reputation.””

He pointed toward me.

“And then he built you.””

I said nothing.

“Do you know what Thomas told me the day before he disappeared?””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Daniel smiled.

“He said you were the reason he had to survive.””

My heart tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he believed you would fix everything.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“He always believed his son would become better than him.””

A strange anger rose inside me.

Because Daniel was twisting memories.

He was taking the love my father had for me and turning it into another weapon.

“You don’t get to talk about him.””

Daniel tilted his head.

“Don’t I?””

Then he looked at Marcus.

“Tell him.””

Marcus remained silent.

Daniel smiled.

“Tell Adrian why Thomas really disappeared.””

Marcus looked at me.

I already knew I wouldn’t like the answer.

“Marcus.””

He took a breath.

“Your father found out Daniel was working with Victor Hart.””

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“But he also found out something else.””

“What?””

Marcus looked at my mother.

“She was the reason Daniel got close.””

My eyes moved to my mother.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel answered.

“She invited him in.””

“No.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Adrian, listen to me.””

I looked at her.

“Did you?””

She shook her head.

“Not like that.””

Daniel laughed.

“Of course not.””

He pulled out another phone.

“Everyone has a story where they are the victim.””

He pressed a button.

A recording played.

My mother’s voice.

“Daniel, I need your help.””

I froze.

The recording continued.

“My husband doesn’t trust anyone anymore.””

A younger version of my mother’s voice.

Desperate.

Afraid.

Daniel’s voice answered.

“You want me to talk to Thomas?””

“Yes.””

The recording stopped.

Daniel looked at me.

“She came to me.””

My mother shook her head.

“Because I thought you could help him.””

“And I did.””

Daniel smiled.

“I helped him disappear.””

The room went silent.

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

“I didn’t know.””

I believed the pain in her voice.

But belief wasn’t enough anymore.

Not after everything.

“Then tell me.””

She looked at me.

“Tell me what happened.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Your father discovered Daniel was involved with Victor.””

Daniel’s smile faded.

My mother continued.

“He confronted him.””

“And?””

“He wanted to expose them.””

Marcus nodded.

“But Daniel moved first.””

Daniel looked annoyed.

“Enough.””

My mother ignored him.

“He threatened Thomas.””

The air became heavy.

“Your father called me that night.””

“The night he disappeared?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“He told me if he didn’t come back, I had to protect you.””

My voice dropped.

“And you did.””

She nodded.

“I hid the account.””

“So where is it?””

Daniel’s eyes shifted.

That was the first time I saw real concern on his face.

Not anger.

Not confidence.

Fear.

My mother noticed too.

She smiled sadly.

“You still don’t know.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Where is it?””

My mother shook her head.

“You spent twelve years searching for it.””

She looked at him.

“And you never realized.””

A silence followed.

Then she said:

“It was never hidden.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“What?””

“It was always with Adrian.””

I froze.

“What are you talking about?””

My mother looked at me.

“The account wasn’t money.””

I frowned.

“Then what?””

“Information.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Thomas knew if someone found the account, they would come after him.””

“So he gave it to me?””

My mother nodded.

“When you were a child.””

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

She smiled sadly.

“Your father trusted you more than anyone.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember.””

“You wouldn’t.””

She reached into her pocket.

And pulled out an old key.

A small silver key.

My breath stopped.

I knew that key.

I had seen it my entire childhood.

My father used to wear it on a chain.

“What is that?””

My mother handed it to me.

“Your father gave it to you the night before he disappeared.””

I stared at it.

“That’s impossible.””

“You were eighteen.””

My memory flashed.

A night before everything changed.

My father sitting in my room.

Giving me something.

Telling me:

“Never lose this.””

I thought it was just a memory.

A sentimental moment.

I never knew it mattered.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Give me the key.””

“No.””

His expression changed.

For the first time, he looked angry.

“Adrian.””

“No.””

I closed my hand around it.

“You spent twelve years lying to me.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“You don’t understand what that key opens.””

“I don’t care.””

“Yes, you do.””

He stepped closer.

“Because inside that account is the truth about your father.””

I looked at him.

“You mean your crime.””

His face hardened.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Adrian.””

My father.

Alive.

His voice.

“Dad?””

A breath.

“I’m sorry.””

My eyes burned.

“Where are you?””

“Don’t listen to Daniel.””

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice became urgent.

“You don’t know.””

I looked at Daniel.

My father continued.

“The person you need to fear is not Daniel.””

Everyone went still.

“What?””

A pause.

Then my father said:

“Daniel is a monster.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“But he is not the one who started this.””

My chest tightened.

“Then who?””

Silence.

Then my father whispered:

“Your mother.””

I looked at her.

She went pale.

“Dad?””

The line crackled.

“I didn’t want to believe it.””

My father sounded broken.

“But the evidence…”

The call cut.

I stared at my mother.

She looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear of Daniel.

Not fear of losing.

Fear of me knowing.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at him.

“Understand what?””

He smiled.

“That every person in your life has lied to you.””

He pointed toward the key in my hand.

“Open the account.””

I said nothing.

“Find the truth yourself.””

The timer on his phone showed:

00:01:13

One minute.

Daniel smiled.

“Choose.””

I looked at Marcus.

At Selena.

At my mother.

At the key.

Then I remembered something.

Something my father said in the recording.

*If your mother is with you when you hear this, do not blame her.*

My father knew.

He knew she would look guilty.

He knew everyone would turn against her.

Which meant there was something else.

Something Daniel didn’t understand.

I looked at the key.

Then at Daniel.

“You made one mistake.””

His smile faded.

“What?””

“You think my father’s greatest weakness was trusting people.””

I stepped forward.

“It wasn’t.””

Daniel stared at me.

“My father’s greatest strength was knowing who to trust.””

The timer reached:

00:00:30

Daniel’s face changed.

Because he realized.

I wasn’t looking for the account.

I was looking at him.

“You already lost.””

His eyes narrowed.

“What did you do?””

I smiled.

“While you were explaining your plan…”

I held up my phone.

“The entire conversation was uploaded.””

Daniel froze.

Marcus looked surprised.

Selena smiled faintly.

“You recorded him.””

I nodded.

Daniel’s confidence disappeared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

The timer reached zero.

Nothing happened.

Daniel looked confused.

Then angry.

“You don’t know where they are.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“But I know someone who does.””

The front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A team of investigators entered.

Behind them was a man in a wheelchair.

Older.

Weaker.

But alive.

My father.

Thomas Vale.

Daniel stepped backward.

Impossible.

My father looked directly at him.

“You always believed you were smarter than everyone.””

Daniel’s face went white.

Thomas continued:

“But you made the same mistake for twelve years.””

He looked at me.

“You underestimated my son.””

I couldn’t breathe.

My father was really there.

Alive.

Standing against the man who destroyed us.

But then my father looked at my mother.

And the expression on his face changed.

Pain.

Not anger.

Pain.

Because there was still one truth left.

One truth nobody had revealed.

My father looked at me and whispered:

“Adrian…”

He took a breath.

“The woman you think you saved…”

May you like

My heart stopped.

“She is the reason I had to disappear.””
